So fun! It would seem that Uhaul vans do not have shock absorbers Driving on the not well maintained FDR drive I thought we were going to bounce off the side of the road and also hoped my daughter packed securely.
ShawD told me that she is “Interim Director of Medical Services” for a week or two when her boss is out of town. Good title for a 22 year old, no?
We just returned from helping DS move into his new apartment for his first year of law school. We pulled a U-Haul trailer of his stuff from Washington following graduation and left it in storage in NC. We U-Haul vanned that stuff locally on Friday to his new apartment. We also used the van to pickup some furniture that he and AvonMom purchased earlier in the week. I do have to say it was the nicest U-Haul van I’ve ever had. It was a 2015 Ford Transit with only 4,000 miles on it. If he changes apartments next summer or fall he now has the number of the local 2 Men & A Truck moving company. We might visit and help with decorating touches but no more moving! My knees and back are too old for this moving routine, particularly when it is 90 plus with humidity!
My DD wants us to help her move from her temporary apt to her new apt by her new job…This time I am not leaving our house until she texts me a picture of a bunch of boxes that are packed…when she moved out of her college apt it was maybe 5% packed when we got there.
Wow! I had kind of forgotten about this page! When do you stop helping your kids move? We found it was OUR age and not theirs that did it. Also, the timing of the moves, and the distance. Our daughter, who is 30, is moving to Brooklyn from DC and is actually hiring movers to do the move. Our son 2011/2015 is moving himself to Seattle Saturday with three suitcases. He’s planning to buy whatever he needs out there. Our middle son did something similar from home to Brooklyn - a couple of suitcases - and then we followed up with a SUV with a a dresser and some smaller things. Our 2011/2015 son will get a large signing bonus in his first paycheck. He’s staying in an airbnb for a couple of weeks while he looks for an apartment and that bonus should help with the downpayments. We’re prepared to co-sign, but don’t think we’ll need to.
@walkinghome and @AvonHSDad, we just helped our son move from one graduate dorm to another – he did all of the lifting but we supplied the SUV and decorating help. He’s on the West Coast. Other than his bike, which we didn’t have to move, it was one load in an SUV and then a trip to Bed, Bath and Beyond for sheets etc. as the old dorm bed was Twin XL and the new dorm is Full XL and to Costco to stock up the kitchen.
Our daughter, the one from the 2011 thread, hasn’t moved since the end of freshman year (she transferred after the first semester and then stopped living in dorms after the second semester). Despite graduating this past December, she remains in the same place until May when she will receive her MSN and become a nurse practitioner. Then, the question is whether she stays put (she lives in walking distance of the Longwood medical area in Boston (I think there are four or five major hospitals there) or moves to some other city. If she moves, she will definitely want our help. She is so ready to leave school.
S moved himself from college to sublet in new city. He just moved again on the 1st to permanent apt. They rented a UHaul trailer and moved everything themselves, plus found lots of stuff for free on the curbs (9/1 is moving day in Boston.)
We only helped with first/last months rent/security deposits as he signed leases for both before he got his first paycheck. It was a lot of money but as H said - better then not having a job and living on our basement.
We visited last Saturday for the first time and brought stuff he had boxed up when he came home for a weekend.
Well we did help our DD move again…from a summer sublet in Brooklyn to another place in Brooklyn because SHE GOT A MATH TEACHER JOB! This time I texted “Show me the boxes” and she texted a picture of flat boxes…(as she was at the store buying some)…I LOL’d but then said “packed boxes”… She and her BF prepared/loaded the boxes, I drove them 15 min across Brooklyn in our SUV, and then my DH and brother unloaded/took them up to her new apt. I made like 5-6 trips but she was much more prepared this time.
I had her cash in all her baptism, etc savings bonds for her security deposit.
congrats, @bopper.
Not much of a cash outlay from us. d’11 had been working all through college and had saved enough for the apartment start up. She used what was left in her college fund for some basic furniture pieces (delivered on move-in day), but I did find myself at Walmart and Target buying some things that had to be assembled with allen wrenches. Must say, the assemble-it-yourself furniture looks a lot better than it did in my day, but it’s still a PITA to put together. Thank goodness I thought to bring the cordless drill and the screw bits.
@ordinarylives - The first thing into my SUV when we are moving kids is my traveling tool kit including my drill and driver set. I also take a folding dolly and bungee cords for moving boxes. It’s a great help with moving.
Yes, bring a dolly/cart. We were surprised, on move in day, how few people did that. (D went to work in a college town, so everyone moves the same day–or so it seems!)
Just a quick update. D is doing very well at her job - getting good reviews from management.
She got into med school for next fall! All that hard work did finally pay off…she’s so excited!
@arisamp, congrats on both present and future.
Congrats to your D on both the job and the med school acceptance
Congratulations to your D!
Thanks all. D did ask if H was ok with helping her move again next year Guess our moving in/out days are not over with her just yet…
Yay! Can you share where she is attending medical school?
My d is enjoying NY life more than she thought. She likes the Economist she is working for and is taking a class at NYU. We are excited to be joining her for Thanksgiving.
D just received her first med school acceptance today! She is so excited. She has had a couple of interviews and wants to wait to make a final decision until she hears back from all the schools she has interviewed at.
^ Congrats to your D and good luck with the rest of her schools!
