<p>DS has skyped with DH, not me since he skypes late at night when I am already down for the count! He calls or texts me only if he has an issue to discuss, like can I preorder an iPhone 5 for him! . I wish he would give me a more of a glimpse into his new life but, I am glad that he does keep in touch more with DH. I know that has did catch his first college cold (from his RM) and he is feeling okay now. I am worried about the mentioned “first week in October fall apart”. I guess I always find something to worry about. It’s my nature but I am trying to not do this.</p>
<p>Mimk, my son doesn’t really want to fill me in on much. He’s never been an oversharer anyway, but at least at home he’d let things out just by being around. I’m mildly concerned that he’s telling me there isn’t much work or studying to do. While I’m glad he isn’t overwhelmed this doesn’t feel right to me. He’s just amazed at the amount of free time. He was crabby the other day which I refused to take personally. I think he waited til now to assert his independence.</p>
<p>wanted to add my 2c on the quarter sched as my older D is at Chicago. For her, the terms do start a bit slowly the first week, but then the work is pretty constant. She is a humanities kid, and there hasn’t been (for her) one big midterm week, they call all tests throughout the term midterms, and papers etc have also been fairly spread out. She has taken four courses each term (but only one lab class so far) so it has been managable for her. She also plays a sport and does the film club, so she has a life.</p>
<p>She has missed out on get togethers with her friends when they are home in Jan but this year will coincide a bit better. </p>

<p>For communication with D2 (the 2016er) it is going well. She willingly skypes with us weekly, and we get text updates with grades etc.</p>

<p>The “pile” is growing, the suitcases are out (bless you, Southwest Airlines), and S cleaned out his room (big organized piles for recycle, donate, throw away). We are celebrating the new year and hosted a big holiday meal last night where S said his goodbyes to pretty much everyone in the immediate family one after another after another and it was pretty emotional. He says he is “simultaneously excited and terrified.” I said of course that that sounded pretty understandable to me and to hang in there, the waiting is the hardest part! We’ve made move-in a little family trip including D; should be fun though I’m packing the Xanax…</p>
<p>S seemed surprised and a little annoyed when I told him a weekly phone call was the parental expectation and that I had done that when I was in school. I told him if he wasn’t alive, I needed to know so I could stop making tuition payments.</p>
<p>Since he’s picked up the biking hobby and we’re having to carry a bike, we’re having to drive. I know it could’ve been shipped, but it looked like more of a pain than it would have been worth. Move-in is Thursday afternoon. We’re leaving in the morning.</p>

<p>Is it suddenly cold beneath your feet? I just got an unsolicited text about two tests from DS. Surely hell has frozen over!</p>
<p>DH sends a daily email to DS. It is short, and 90% of the contents are just on our activities, and events. He will occasionally slip in a question, but that is rare. As a result, DS sends back an acknowledging email and usually adds something about what’s going on at school. DS is not a phone guy, and we are not text people, so this is a good compromise.</p>
<p>I fetched DS from school yesterday so he could vote in our local referendum this AM. It was his first trip home in a month, and he brought laundry at his father’s suggestion (!). We fed him a home cooked meal, and he happily vegged out with us watching a couple of his favorite shows that had been Tivo’d. It was good to see him but I think the dog was happiest of all! After voting before work today, DH took him back. We will see him again next weekend for parents’ weekend. He has not needed his bike, so we will bring that back with us.</p>
<p>MizzBee - did the text say, “Hi Mom! I just took two tests today and they went great! Aced them both. Thanks to you and the wonderful job you did raising me!” I’m paraphrasing, of course.</p>
<p>Let’s see - Thursday will mark 3 weeks of classes for my guys. They’re both chomping at the bit for the work to get harder.</p>
<p>Not much communication with DS either. He’s been away for 22 days, but who’s counting?? Over the course of that time, there has been one phone call (upon my request), a few emails and one text. All communication was initiated by me including the last communication which was a week ago. I’m trying to stand back a bit, to allow him to adjust to his life away from home, but it’s difficult. Maybe it’s me who needs more time to adjust!!

<p>PN-it was pretty close. Aced Calc 2, missed one on Chemistry, but got the extra credit so should be an A. Of course, no to the great parenting, but he did remind me to text him the update to big Brother finale tomorrow night.</p>
<p>I get texts, but they’re always at 12:30 am. At first I panicked and thought there were emergencies. But they say things like, “I’m watching How to Train Your Dragon with the guys upstairs!! I love this movieeeeeee!” Sigh. </p>
<p>Stanford. What slackers. 
I was wondering, watching the USC/Stanford game, if any new freshmen can ever go to football games or get season tickets, since they’re not even on campus til Week 4 of the season. I guess that goes for our hometown Ducks, too-- students don’t start til next week and are moving in this week. (Note to self: do not go anywhere near the Target.)</p>
<p>Thanks for the well wishes on move-in today PN! We drove up to the Palo Alto area on Sunday and then had all day yesterday to get acquainted with the campus and make a Target run for some odds and ends that we hadn’t gotten yet. The window for move-in is between 8 and 2, but of course I’m the only one chomping at the bit to get over there sooner rather than later. I suggested 10, but DS thought that was rushing it, lol! So we’ll see when everyone (including younger D) gets moving. Of course, DS has a nervous stomach this morning (not uncommon for him, I’m afraid). I just hope it all goes smoothly and that both his room and roommate are good (they don’t find out either till we get there) and that roommate’s parents are nothing like General Mom!</p>
<p>PN, my son was an oversharer. He’s very talkative and we were together a lot in high school – a long drive to and from school, sometimes we went on walks, if my husband worked late it was just us for dinner and we conversed a lot. He told me over the summer he expected to call home about once a week and I dismissed it, but I think that’s what it’s turning out to be. I also think he’s been in pretty close touch with his sister – a lot in the opening days, maybe less now, but for him that probably factors into his allowance for time spent on family contact. It just feels really weird to me to have such a radical change in the amount of contact.</p>
<p>I’d call my S more of an “information manager.” We made the five-hour round trip from our town in the middle of nowhere to the opposite side of Houston for trumpet lessons for five years. If I needed to talk to him about something, I’d do it then–his only way out was to roll out the door at 70 mph. When not faced with the specter of road rash, he tries to keep us in the dark with respect to “his business” unless he needs something. I understand his need for privacy, but that doesn’t make it any less irritating.</p>

<p>Mutti and others, just wait until your kids still have several weeks of classes left in June and their friends are all whoopin it up. Hopefully this won’t bother them too much…</p>
<p>D2 started off terse with the texts, but is sharing more now. And some of them are the good outcomes on tests! </p>
<p>Good luck late launchers, you get the stage to yourselves when you report your experiences, and there will be so many who have been there to answer any questions!</p>
<p>SteveC- we drove both kids to college for year 1 mostly because we brought each a bike, along with all the rest of the stuff. D2 is riding her bike to class most days, because that’s the quickest way to get there at 8:30am. At least she is getting up and getting there, she has answered some texts from me earlier in the day so its good to see she is keeping a good schedule from what I can see. D1 rides her bike everywhere, esp now that she is living off campus, not of class of course because those don’t start for two more weeks…</p>
<p>DD’s launch has been very smooth. All our anxiety about contact and sharing was quickly relieved by frequent status texts and “touching base” phone calls. She’s coming home this weekend for HS Homecoming (yay! :D). 3 weeks gone is a good run. She also invited “little bro” to family weekend. Thought that was a nice touch, so we’ll see her again 2 weeks after next.</p>
<p>S just informed me that he’s de-friending me on FB since he “can’t control what others may post”. Grrrrrrr…</p>
<p>I talked to my D on the phone last night. She’s already picked up a Minnesota accent. That didn’t take too long! Uff da!</p>
