Parents of the HS Class of 2012 - New beginnings

Congrats to seiclan’s D!

I called the school to see what needed to be done since I can’t find the records. He can just go to the health services and get the shot. 7 years isn’t too soon to get it again and if it does have the pertussis in it then all the better. Now I just have to get him over there to do it.

Kind of amazing last year at this time we were all getting the final college lists done and getting recommendations and wondering how it was all going to work out. What a difference a year makes!

The sound you hear is me pounding my head against my desk. I’ve been doing a lot of editing in vi on a UNIX machine and have deleted this post twice by hitting the ESC key (which takes you out of insert mode in vi). I’m now resorting to editing in a notepad file which I’ll cut and past into the message space. Been a long time since I’ve had to be this bilingual (UNIX/Windows).

I fielded several calls from S yesterday regarding registration. Good to know I’m can still perform a useful function besides sending money and mailing stuff we forgot to pack. :)

The kids are assigned a freshman seminar via a “top ten list” process and the seminar teacher becomes their freshman advisor. S is a prospective psych major so he wanted a seminar in the psych department. He got his first choice and was told by some upperclasspeeps that he lucked into one of the best available advisors (i.e., takes the role most seriously) as a result. He’s also a licensed clinical psychologist, which could come in handy later. :)

He registered for a developmental psychology class reserved for freshpeople with AP Psych credit (since most of the psych classes are gone by the time they register). He’s accepted the math department’s invitation to the MENU program and is taking linear algebra first quarter. In second and third quarters, they’ll use linear algebra to develop multivariable calculus. He had to be forced into the French class to which the placement exam directed him. He moaned a little about that since he’ll have a 9:00 AM class every day. First day of class is tomorrow, but both his Thursday classes are discussion sections, I think, so the real action will probably have to wait for Friday.

Congratulations to seiclan’s D on the PCAT! I’ve joked with S that his GRE vocabulary flashcards will be in the mail soon.

I need some good vibes from all of my surrogate parents here for me to have a swift and full recovery from my concussion and for my IRL mom to let me play the sport again.

CPU, concussions are very serious business as some in the NFL are finally starting to acknowledge. If your doctor clears you to play, I’m hoping you and your mom can come to terms. Please take care of yourself; you know we all care about you.

CPU --

Concussions are a MUCH bigger deal than we realized until recently. Most students/athletes are so eager to return to playing that they return too early. Keep in mind that this was a traumatic brain event and let yourself have the time to recover. Your schoolwork may be enough stress for your brain at the moment without your sport.

Prayers for you and a full recovery.

Congrats seiclan’s D! The thought of going through another round of college interviews is enough to make me crawl into a little ball, but hopefully she will have good luck. Need I remind you that Purdue is excellent?

CPU, take time to recover and don’t ignore any symptoms. You have such a great brain that we don’t want it damaged!

Hope you recover fast CPU. At the same time, you DO NOT WANT a second concussion or any kind of further damage to your brain while it is healing. Give it time.

SteveC - thanks for reminding me that my older daughter FINALLY starts classes tomorrow! Maybe some of the Senior year shenanigans will calm down!

CPU- nice to hear from you, but sorry about the concussion news. Follow your Dr’s orders and hope you and mom can come to agreement.

Congrats to seiclan’s D!

SteveC- I empathize, as Unix is not my native language but I am much more rusty in it these days.

eye- I agree getting another shot is a good solution.

OHM- welcome “new” poster ;)

Glad to hear all at Chicago had a nice move in. I remember I was happy with the program, not too much not too little. My D was away for the weekend. Remember Amazon prime when your kids get registered and need their books.

Ditto. Hang in there – sports will still be there once you’re healed up.

Congrats to everybody on being launched. Such a journey, eh. D continues to thrive at UVM. And our dog is getting lots and lots and lots of attention at home.

mihcal–I enjoyed your D’s tidbit about seating and class size.

What a process pre-launch, launch and now post-launch is! Thanks you guys, for your humor and your wisdom shared.

Just had a nice chat with S on FB. He sounded tired after the week of orientation and ready for classes to begin. He’s got a pretty intense load for this 1st quarter, but all classes that are of interest to him.

We’re definitely missing having him around, but it is beginning to feel more normal. I’m trying to schedule regular activities for H and I, and work keeps us busy as well. Unfortunately I missed out on signing up for this semester’s beer university, it sounded like a fun and educational experience. ;)

CC is nudging me to post! Guess I’ve been lurking too long!

Just bought S’s plane ticket for the Christmas break. Had to wait for him to figure out his Bio final date. Thank goodness his finals don’t go to the last day–that saved us over $100!

I know he got his Bio exam back on Monday and am biting my fingers to keep myself from texting him about it (no news is good news, right?). He is finding Bio somewhat frustrating since he feels like the prof is actually teaching Chem and Physics instead (which he is actually stronger in than straight Bio). I think he has Brain/CogSci and Chem tests this week too. I really miss the casual “so how was your day” chance to extract info over the dinner table!

He is LOVING college! Seems to be studying and taking advantage of the TAs (says his Bio workshop is great because it’s just him and nine cute girls!). He texted H to find out what a c.v. is, so he is at least applying for jobs.

Sometimes I feel like I’m reading tea leaves or deciphering codes when I put together all the bits of info I hear about his life from other people with what he tells me!

CPU - definitely no sports until you’re completely healed… and I’d err on the caution side. Do you have a coach who can advise you too?

SteveC sounds like your S has a really good program with the psychology and MENU math. I’ve been thinking of the NU kids this week with that scary situation of the missing student going on. That’s my original hometown and where I went to grad school, so I always feel a connection. The NU community could use everyone’s prayers for that mystery to be solved. My heart goes out to his parents and friends and everyone there.

@CPU. Get well soon…and remember you also need cognitive rest after a concussion. Really hard to do as a first year college student, but take care of yourself and get any accommodations you need.

DDs are busy and happy. D2 has her first a cappella performances this weekend. D1 is actually coming home for the state equestrian medal competitions which happen to be held in the next town over. She is riding in the adult competition on Friday and grooming for the juniors, so I get her all weekend - well sort of, since she will be working 12 hour days!

Steve C, I think my S is taking the same MENU math as your S. Just heard about his final schedule today.

He said he was told to expect 15 hours of homework per week for the math class, yikes. There were similar expectations in the advanced math he took in high school, but he always managed to keep it under 8 hours. I wonder if he’ll be able to do it this time around.

CPU - get well soon. what do you play? We understand it is important for you but seeing what is going on in NFL after football, is the sport worth it for you to have concussions?

PNWedwonk - thanks for the nudge about plane tickets home at Christmas. I hadn’t thought that far ahead yet (CHRISTMAS ALREADY!!!), but I’m thinking about it now. I hope your guy did well on the Bio test. My guy posted his results on FB (aced it according to the post). I’ve been debating sending him an e-mail today asking how his other tests are going this week… I’ll probably wait until after school to contact him since I think one of the tests is today and I don’t want to seem too over eager (even if I am). He absolutely loves it there too. I wonder if our two know each other?

CPU - hope you’re feeling better today.

Glad to read that other launches (both older and newer) have continued to go well and hope those with roommate situations are able to resolve them.

I secretly wish we had a link to General Mom’s FB page as I wonder what she’s been writing about her son’s roomie and family. I could envision great entertainment value from it. It’s sad that it’s true though.

Feel better CPU but please be very careful and take care of yourself! Concussions are very serious!

My daughter is loving school for the most part. She is feeling a little overwhelmed with her schedule between classes and cheer practice. We have been to two home football games to see her cheer and I am going to get her on Friday to come home for the weekend. Originally she was coming home because her 21 year old brother is leaving on Monday to go work out of the country until next summer but I am so glad that she is coming home because she is really sick - she went to the doctor on Monday and they said she has a sinus infection and put her on three medicines. She is still miserable! And it is killing me not being there to take care of her!
