Parents of the HS Class of 2012 - New beginnings

KarGaro, sorry your daughter has been so sick, but I’m sure with a little TLC from mom this weekend, she’ll be feeling better.

CPU-echoing what everyone else has said: Sorry to hear you were injured and please take it slow and allow for complete healing. Hope the rest of school is going well for you.

5boys-Thanks for the update. It must be so nice to have him home and to hear all his stories!

October is approaching, so hang on!!!

kathieh1 – I like Evanston, especially the area immediately south of campus with the historic housing. I’ve been following the Harsha Maddula story on dailynorthwestern.com. I can’t imagine being his father and being told the Coast Guard had been brought in to search Wilmette Harbor. Just terrible.

Northernwoods – Sent you a PM.

Hugs to all the sick kiddos and their parents, I hope everyone is feeling better soon. S had his sick round about four weeks into the semester and is feeling much better now.
The following could also go in the “what did you fail to teach your child” thread.
S returned after the break between freshman summer start and fall quarter to find three tickets ($48 each) on his car because he had a campus temporary permit and did not obtain the permanent one before heading off to break. GRR. Interesting factoid, the traffic cops take a picture of the car when they write the ticket and the third pic showed the first two tickets sitting undisturbed. We were able to prove he was out-of-state before the first ticket and did not return until after the third was issued. He appealed and two of them were dismissed, so that is good at least.
Lesson learned, do not ignore requirements of permit parking!

CPU - don’t rush yourself back, concussions can take weeks to recover from please be careful.

KarGaro- hope your D gets some rest and recovery while at home…

I just heard from D she went back to the health center today she had a temp of 102 and now a viral infection. She emailed her teachers for Friday to see if she could miss they all were very nice and told her to stay in bed and get rest. Her calculus teacher said she will email her the notes…
Hard having her away from home and sick… My niece is going to check on her later today. Thankful they are at the same school.

Parent & Family Weekend this weekend. Soooo excited! We have a lot to fit in plus the “stock up on supplies” shopping trip and upgrading our phones. Luckily the weather will be dry and fall-like. Very excited to see all of the parents and students reuniting!

Plus-Saturday is S’s birthday. Would be nice if I would have figured out some sort of cake like product to bring to the event! Not a good mom moment. I can swing by on the way and pick up some cupcakes-he can have/share those tomorrow night while I am at an event that I told him I wouldn’t make him sit thru with me. But Saturday he is all mine!

Hoping everyone who is ill gets better quickly, those who are hurt take the time to heal (CPU), and those having roommate issues has a moment of peace where they don’t have that stress even for just an evening.

Must remember my camera (and the cupcakes)!

Thanks all. I’m not trying to rush being back in play but I’d like to recover. When I’m 24 hrs of being symptom free I will go back in for reevaluation and then work back up slowly from there.

They told me to do the bare minimum of work and if it starts bothering me then stop.

I don’t have a “concussion” but it’s borderline. I went to the doctor and saw my results from my concussion baseline test (which was scheduled before I got hit, so the results are useless as a baseline). The doctor told me the average percentage for H students is a certain percentage and my scores were about 10-15% lower which doesn’t indicate huge trauma. And it’s hard to gauge what my normal is because I didn’t take it before the injury.

I had amnesia for the first 2 days but that was only for academic things (forgetting formulas/steps to solve a certain problem)(and this happened in science class which I’m not strong in anyway, memorizing ions and stuff), not everyday things (how did I get from A to B? Did I eat today? Etc). I feel fine now, I’m supposed to do self checks everyday. No headaches, amnesia, balance issues, etc. I am just tired by the time my second class rolls around (only allowed to attend 2 a day) so that’s something I’m still watching out for.

I play rugby. And this is such a big transition time for the H women’s team (gaining respect/support from school, personal trainers, transportation, going varsity (per Title IX), etc). And I know they’ll start recruiting soon, so now’s the best time for rookies. Cement your place in the team, so recruited athletes will have to fit into our team dynamic.

Also roommate issues. I cannot catch a break.

Family weekend for us too - we leave tomorrow - SOOO excited!! It’s very good timing with the recent roommate issues and now S is sick also. He started feeling sick Sunday night and yesterday tells me “you know there are lots of kids with Mono”. Geeeez!

So, given the fact that he always “tired” and now has a sore throat and general cold-like symptoms, I told him to run, not walk, to the health center. Luckily, they didn’t think he presented like a typical Mono case (lymph glands not swollen enough, etc) so didn’t even do the monospot test. I just can’t wait to see him for myself.

On the roommate front, I think they may be able to switch which would be awesome. They talked to the RA and were able to find another kid (on the same hall) that is an early bird and is willing to move. I’m keeping my fingers and toes crossed that is works out!

Hoping everyone’s kids are still doing well and wishing those who are sick a quick recovery!

{{{hugs}}} to CPU. You know we’re all fans here. Please take it easy. Sorry you’re having roommate issues. Just keep your eye on the big picture. You and roommate will probably find your way to getting along by the end of semester and you’ll room with someone else next year. As far as the head trauma goes, take it slow as everyone here has said. Even a borderline case can leave someone feeling a little out of it for a few weeks. It may even contribute to tensions with your roommate. Just breathe deeply, err on the said of caution with your brain, and prioritize how you spend your time and energy until you’re fully recovered.

CPU Give yourself a break. Rest, drink tea, take it easy as needed.

I hope you have a smooth recovery, and the roommate issues resolve themselves quickly. If you need us, your CC parents are here.

One week til S comes home! Yay! Spoke to him last night, we’ve been trying to help him deal with migraines and stress, and he actually listened to us and went to they gym to run. He needed help with a plan and how to deal with a few things. He sounded as happy as I’ve heard him since he’s been there. We all passed the phone around as we all laughed and joked. We’re trying to show him that he can be his own independent person, but also keep us close too.

CPU - please be careful. We all understand what you are saying, but this is more serious than you may appreciate.

Excited for everyone with parents weekend - be sure to update us on how it all goes.

Good morning!

Nice to hear about upcoming visits and good phones conversations!

Time is moving so fast this fall - I’ll have two college kids home for a weekend in 7 days!

Got a call out of the blue from DD last night. Nothing in particular - just wanted to chat. She is getting bored with the food, has plenty of new friends, likes her Econ class and is thinking about next semester’s classes already. I had to play it cool and not let on how thrilled I was to hear her voice. (She has been texting her sibs regularly and they share, so we know she is having fun.)

CPU - worried about you. That brain got you into H . . . take care of it. Can’t you get one of those soft rugby helmets?

CC appeared to have some database issues yesterday. I posted midday, it acknowledged it as being posted “today” but had some posts marked with 9-27, which was, of course, “today.” It ended up out-of-order back about a page.

Parents received an e-mail from NU President, Morton Schapiro, last night with the news that that the body of Harsha Maddula, the missing NU student, had been recovered in Wilmette Harbor. Not the news anyone wanted, but at least the family will get closure and can begin the long road to healing. My prayers are with them.

Oh no - I’m so sorry to hear the news from NU. So heartbreaking.

The news from NU is so sad. I am so sorry for the family.

So sorry to hear the terrible news from NU. Keeping the family in my thoughts and prayers.

Sad news on the NU student, my prayers for the family…

an update from D she is worse today, have called our family doctor for a referal of a regular doctor for her to visit. Plesase keep her in your thoughts, I want to get in the car and go now but H says to wait and see what doctor says.

Sorry about your D, rushedmom. I hope that she’s better soon!

CPU, my son also plays rugby. He is healing up from a shoulder muscle injury right now. As a Mom, I have been very impressed by the level of skill the trainers have for even a club team. Their trainer just submitted his doctoral dissertation in sports medicine! My son has been well taken care of. For you non-rugby parents out there, scrum caps are mainly to prevent ones ears from being injured and they also do a dandy job of minimizing cleat cuts to the head. They really do nothing for concussions. The best preventative for concussions in non-helmet sports is a well fitted mouth guard. That, and making sure you tackle your opponent cheek to cheek (your cheek to their butt cheek) so you have a soft spot to land on!

Thanks Mathinokc…

Just heard from our Doctor’s office they called and got her an appointment at a local Doctor (who is a friend of our Doctor thankfully). D is on her way to his office now they are kindly fitting her in…(a friend is driving her) hope they can get her back up and going… I think she probably needed a shot yesterday and was not given one. Her temp today is almost 103…
