All is moving along here-baked way too may sweets, got all shopping and wrapping done, just need to do the cleaning that I have been putting off…

Talked to insurance company today. I mentioned that S lives on campus and is not allowed to have a car there so he only drives when he comes home. They told me I could have him listed as an “excluded driver” while he is on campus and just call them and tell them he will be home on such and such dates (even if it is only for the weekend) and they will put him back on. If I get there VM, just leave a message and he will be covered. This will save approx. $200/mth when he is not included.

Has anyone else done this? She said she had 2 other calls before mine today asking for the same thing.

Hope everyone is getting home safe and is happy, healthy, and has a chance to relax and enjoy!!

When my son left in August, we were able to take him off our insurance. He’ll be home for two weeks (coming in in a little over 2 hours from his cross country trip!) and I’ve added him back to our insurance for two weeks. It was super easy-one quick email. We have Farmers, if that helps.

I just wanted to thank those who gave me the confirmation that giving a gift from the college bookstore was ok. I got back from college yesterday, and gave my father a shirt that said “Emory Football: Still Undefeated” (we don’t have a football team), and he loved it.

Picked up D2 at the train station around 9 PM last night. Hooray! She had a great semester. Early grades are looking good. She is very happy to be home, although her break is only about a week and a half before she heads out “on tour” with her a cappella group. To short for me.

Whenhen - my Emory son also has (and loves) that T-shirt! He does have to explain it when he wears it in our hometown though.

So wonderful that all my kids (including my eldest daughter) are sleeping at home for the next 5 days! This is the best holiday gift i could ever get!

D1 is home safely. She had a scary trip to the airport. She had an early takeoff and called a cab company the night before for a pick up. She got in the car and didn’t realize there was no meter. This is a 10 minute ride from the campas to National airport. 3/4 of the ways there, the driver, pulled over and asked for payment because it so busy at the airport. My daughter told him she had cash. He insisted that she pay by credit card and after she gave him my debit card, he charged her $125 for a $20 ride. He said that they were a private car company and can charge what they wanted. My daughter whas terrified and just signed the slip since she was in the cab alone and her luggage was in the trunk. She got to the airport and tried to talk to the police and they said it was a civil matter since he diddn’t outwordly threaten her. I guess D.C. police has more imprtant things to do. I called the company and the dispatcher yelled and screamed at me and then call me back 20 times yelling. Citibank can’t due anything since she signed the slip. Anyway, make sure your kids have a reputable taxi/driving service to call. My D1 just googled…

Calimom - WOW! I’ll say I’ve never heard of that one before and it would be really, really annoying to me. I’d at least be notifying the BBB and the local Attorney General. I suspect something in that practice is illegal and someone should know about it - and maybe, just maybe, even fix it. It’s worth talking to people higher up anyway. I definitely appreciate your warning!

Is it illegal to phone tape in your state (you might need google)? If not, call the dispatcher back and record what they say each and every time they call you back. Get as much evidence as you can.

On a different note… I hope the rest of the URoc kiddos made it home. Middle son told me many who waited until Friday had quite a delay at the airport. I was really happy he could leave Thursday. It’s been really enjoyable having him home!

Calimom - just thinking - you also might want to start a thread about this rather than just posting it on here. Others might know if and who you could contact as well as needing to be warned about what happened.

I would write a letter to Citibank and dispute the charge. You can do that with unsatisfactory products, and this was unsatisfactory in the extreme. Don’t take no for an answer… I’m pretty sure you can dispute it. I’d be so terrified that this would happen to another young student. What would they have done if she hadn’t paid? I’m really just horrified to hear this.

Calimom, does the school your daughter goes to have a dept that recommends taxi companies for next time? If not you can tell them why they need to step up and take some action to ensure this doesn’t happen to another student. So glad your daughter arrived safety to the airport and home.

Yes, I would definitely contest the charge. Call right now, I’m sure there is a 24 hr phone for when cards are lost.

My S is on a bus coming home right now from UR. There was some concern the bus might need to be delayed due to weather but it took off on time and he should be home in a couple of hours. Thurs definitely was the best weather day to leave.

Wow. That’s terrible re the cab ride. Hope you get satisfaction!

So happy to hear all the '12s getting home safely! My D came home Wed night and then immediately left for the mountains the next morning with her friends. Now s14 is at a different mountain with his friends and suddenly our family vacation time means no kids in the house. Wha???

Cali- I would call the local TV stations in the town where this happened (especiallly those that have a consumer advocate dept.). It might take a while because of the Holidays and vacations but eventually you will find one willing to take up the cause, and it is rare that a company doesn’t relent from onslaught of bad publicity.

That is upsetting about the cab. I wonder if you can tell the cab company that if you are not immediately credited the $100, you will make it your personal mission in life to make sure that their practices are brought to light and that, in the end, it will cost them a lot more than $100.

I might be the first 2016 parent with the nightmare academic scenario (are there bingo points for this? Like 100?). S got a letter yesterday from school and he did not do as well as he told me he was doing. They’ve told him to take next semester off; he is writing an appeal.

He’s asked me not to share this with our extended family until after Christmas (he’ll have an answer from school by the 27th I think), so he and I and his sister get to sit with it for now.

Just a couple of days ago, the day before we got the school news, our house went into contract…the house I am selling to go smaller since we are only two of us most of the year.

I find I am a little calmer today than I was yesterday - I was totally freaking out yesterday - but still lots of horrible possibilities spinning through my mind.

I am so sorry OHmom. I’m sorry both you and your son find yourselves in this very difficult situation. I guess it is time to talk with your son about why he thinks he didn’t do well. Can he identify what he could improve upon if he returned? Too much partying? Not enough studying? Didn’t take advantage of free tutoring? Difficult transition? Once you and he understand why he thought he was doing ok, but didn’t then maybe you can formulate a plan. I’d become very familiar with the school’s policies. Best wishes to you and your son. Hope the downsizing works out however you wish it to.

The cab situation would have me fumming too! However, if she called a private limosine service and did not confirm the price prior, then her mistake. An expensive mistake. :(

I’m sorry, OHMom. Was your son surprised by the letter, or did he know he wasn’t doing as well as he had led you to believe? Does it have anything to do with not attaining a minimum GPA or certain percentage or earned credits? If so, I thought that Cxxxxxx U doesn’t assess that until the end of the spring semester.

Calimom – good luck pursuing your case against the cab company. I like TV4caster’s idea. Or, what about a letter to the editor of the paper in your D’s college town decrying how unscrupulous cab companies take advantage of unsuspecting college students from out of state?
