Parents of the HS Class of 2012 - New beginnings

Best wishes to those still traveling home or for those families who are heading out soon on holiday travel.

I think her 4 weeks home is going to go pretty quickly for my daughter.

 • We have family holiday stuff this weekend (grandparents)
 • My daughter’s boarding school has an all-classes reunion a few days after Christmas.
 • One of her best friends whose family moved away this summer is coming to town for a few days.
 • She’s going to the Joint Math Meetings in San Diego.
 • Her other grandparents are coming to visit
 • She returns to the NE (but not school – her dorm isn’t open) a few days early to Hunt at MIT’s Mystery Hunt.

My D just got a phone call from the supervisor for the externship she signed up for in mid-Jan (the week before school re-starts). He told her that they need her send in some paperwork because they are going to pay her!

Wow, mihcal1! Congratulations to your D!! Now tell me what an externship is as opposed to an internship.

Mathinokc, feel free to PM me when you come to San Diego. Your D sounds so motivated-that’s awesome!

Internship pay! She must not be in Boston. Congrats!

Woohoo, mihcal1! Happy dancing!

sbjdorlo – Unfortunately, I’m skipping the trip to San Diego this time. My dh is going with my D, although odds are they’ll only see each other in the hotel room at night and maybe for meals – they have different interests as far as sessions go at the meetings.

Happy holidays to everyone getting their kid back - for a little bit. Maybe less of a kid now too. Him and some of his other HS friends got invited to speak at his old HS to pre-college kids - Topic: What’s It Really Like?" He says it’s way more fun than he thought, and so he will pass that on. And his grades way better than he thought, so he’ll probabaly pass that on too. Sneaky Profs - and tough tests.

HS Yearbooks finally available too, so maybe his team’s pictures will be prominent since they did so well in the state - but I don’t think he cares as much as me and Mum do. I am sure his HS career is soooo last year.

Enjoy them and their laundry while they’re here! Happy Holidays to all.

D’s flight home this evening cancelled due to weather. It’s a little frustrating because at the moment there isn’t any snow. Storm is supposed to hit us in an hour. No happy reunion tonight. :(

:(

I’m in Ohio and it’s gusting up to 55 mph and supposedly going to snow a lot. Safety first but it still stinks, sorry Mary.

Sending some good thoughts for everyone to get home safely. Happy holidays to the class of 2016.

Hugs to those having to wait longer than they should… <<<>>>

sbjdorlo – per wikipedia:

My D’s externship was listed for 5~7 days. I guess they agreed on her coming for 5, which gets around the issue of where to spend the intervening weekend. She’s planning to work the last week of winter break, before classes start up again, and then go straight from there back to campus.

My D is trying to decide between CS, EE, and MatSciE, so this seems like a good opportunity for her to get a handle on what different kinds of “real world” engineers do. She plans to study up on Python and Eagle PCB design software so that she can show up with hopefully-useful skills.

D is supposed to fly home in the morning. She has to be on the bus at 7 am. You may recall that she overslept when she was coming home for Thanksgiving and almost missed her flight. Tonight’s conversation went like this:
Me: How can I help make sure you’re up?
Her: I will be up.
Me: Text me when you’re up so I know.
Her: It only happened once! I will be up.
Me: Why don’t you want me to make sure you are?
Her: IT ISN"T GOING TO HAPPEN AGAIN! It only happened once!
Me: You only flew home once.
Her: Fine, I will text you when I get up.
Me: What should I do if I don’t hear from you?
Her: Call me (very exasperated voice).

I am hoping the weather doesn’t affect her flight. We have wind and rain. It may turn to snow but they are saying we shouldn’t get more than an inch and it won’t stick to pavement. NYC isn’t supposed to get snow. I just hope planes and crews can be in the right places. Weather in other places can mess those things up sometimes.

I really hope she wakes up on time. sigh

I can totally relate. D2 only takes a bus home, but I call her half an hour before departure and I make her call me when she gets on the bus. My kids have learned to just do what I ask instead of fighting me.

Good luck 2016BarnardMom. While S and I don’t have those dialogues about reminders for flights we have has similar ones on other topics.

2016barnardmom … Did she get up in time?

I think I called my D a few early mornings her sophomore year when she had her first apartment to make sure she wouldn’t miss her bus ride home from Boston, and just to show me, she didn’t answer her phone, even though she was already up. My son, who just finished his first semester got the dad door-to-door service because H was so happy to see him again.

So happy for everyone to see their kids home from break … D is home tomorrow and then our house is nice and full again.

Barnard mom: Hope your daughter got home, not sure if she was going through OHare. We had blizzard, blowing snow, high winds at my office this morning. 3 miles east at my home the sun was shining. Gotta love Michigan weather! All stopped now and beginning to melt.

DD made it to the airport and onto the plane - will be home in 5 1/2 hours!

Thankfully, the snow didn’t affect the direct LGA to DTW flight and she DID get up on time. Picked her up at the airport, picked up my son (who had a half day today) and we all went out for a nice lunch.

Now it feels like Christmas :)

To those whose children are facing challenges getting home, my heart hurts for you. I hope they can all find a way home soon and you can all relax and enjoy the holidays :)

Congrats 2016BarnardMom!

I hope everyone arrives home safe and sound…and soon!

It really is nice to have D home…there are fresh, homemade scones cooling in my kitchen and a whole lot of gifts are wrapped for the extended family…and she’s home!
