Parents of the HS Class of 2012 - New beginnings

It is over. D2 is going to be D1’s sister in another sense. D2’s best friend is also going to be at the same house as her, so that was a real bonus. There were a lot of tears and drama among her friends. Everyone seem to be happy with their bids. Tomorrow is first day of class.

Congrats to D2, oldfort.

Yay, oldfort family. Sounds like a very desirable outcome. Hope the tears and drama resolve to happy endings for all.

yay for oldfort’s daughter!

Glad it worked out oldfort!

S is in good spirits. He’s had 3 out of his 4 meetings with various support folks for the academic issues. The lighter load of just four classes appears to be a blessing…he’s only 2 weeks in but says his workload is a lot less than last semester. Hopefully that holds through exams…

Yay for Oldfort’s D2

OHMomof2- Very happy to hear that your S is doing good!

Congrats to D2 d’ Olfort! Very cool!

My guy had pics up on his Facebook page of his first snow at UR and his first snowman (there). It’s about 6 inches tall (they looked like they only had 3 - 4 inches of snow). The pics were pretty though - UR at night in the snow. I can only imagine the scene… the southern and some international students out admiring their first snow (of the season anyway) and the northern kids wondering what the fuss is all about.

I’m a transplanted northerner myself (further north than UR growing up), but I’ll admit to liking a fresh snow here far more than most local adults do. It’s easier to like snow when it comes and goes before it ever really gets dirty. I don’t like it enough to move back north. I’m not really a winter sports person - though I do like watching some of them on TV occasionally.

Happy for your d Oldfort and your s OHMom!

Yay for Oldfort’s D2. I did the sorority thing for 3 years before my engineering work and co-ops required more of my time. It was a great opportunity to have a tighter social life within a large campus, and I really enjoyed Greek Week and the formal dinners each Monday.

Glad to hear OHmom’s S is taking advantage of academic help. He gets a Mom Bingo point, but we just won’t tell him.

I dropped off my S today. He is ready for a new semester (with his old phone re-instated after the loss of his iPhone). We had a great chance to chat 1on1 for 3.5 hours, so that was a bonus. We stopped at a Walmart that was on the way to get an emergency stash of Ramen noodles, a coffee pot, and coffee, plus I forced some new white athletic socks on him as I saw the disgusting ones that were in our dryer.

Here’s to the 2nd semester!

Thanks everyone. I see we are short for good news right now.
OHMom - keeping my fingers crossed for your son.

Yay for oldfort’s D2, and glad to hear her friends got there first choice. Even when that happens most people find they end up where they belong.

I think my DD is going to major in Downton Abbey.

Congrats to Oldfort’s D on the great news. My D is leaving tomorrow to return to school. I’ll miss her but she’s happy there, so it will be fine. We’ll see her in February for parent’s weekend.

OHMomof2 - we’re all rooting for your S!

Oldfort–congrats to your daughter. How fun for your two daughters. I was never the sappy sorority one in college (didn’t like wearing the sweatshirts or many of the rituals), even though I ran social one year, but it truly is a lifelong bond. The women from my sorority are my closest college friends now.

Barbarino–while this may have changed since the many years ago I was on campus, sophomores were allowed to pledge also. I think some fraternities even had tiny fall pledge classes. There were so very many fraternities at Cornell representing every type of person you could imagine–sometimes all under one roof. He may decide that he wants to pursue this next year after he has a chance to see where he thinks he will fit in.

Congratulations to oldfort’s D and best wishes to jaylynn’s D! I’m sure I don’t have an adequate appreciation for it, but rush has to be a stressful process.

barbarino – I’ve always wanted to ask (and maybe I have, I can’t remember), is that as in “Vinnie Barbarino” of Welcome Back Kotter fame? :)

Welcome Back was my favorite show in high school. My parents, as immigrants, thought the show was very inappropriate. Mom loved Happy Days.

Brought my son back to UNH last night. When we got there, there were only two names on his door, instead of three. One of his roommates is apparently not going to return. It made us all very sad. Yes, my son had a great first semester, and did really well, and his roommate, I’m pretty sure, was on the autism spectrum, and seemed to have trouble with things like getting to class on time, and just getting assignments and tests dates into his head, but still. It just kind of made everything feel …fragile. OTOH, no more food wrappers, crumbs and half filled coffee cups all over the room. I gave that place a good sweep before we left.

also rooting for OH’s S, sounds like a good balance, hope it keeps up.
tozubri- sorry for the bad news concerning the roommate.

yay for oldfort’s D on joining her sister’s sorority and hoping for a good experience for jaylynn’s D and others who are still going through the process. My D is participating, and I had a call with her last night after the first weekend. It was extremely positive for her and she met a lot of great people and liked the chapters and the work they do. Next round is next weekend.

DD auditioned for the a cappella group. She was called back yesterday and is hoping to find out soon.
