Parents of the HS Class of 2012 - New beginnings

Spring break for me!!! Lovely looking out the window at all of the snow…ha, ha, ha!

S is about sick of walking through all of it on campus. He is actually hitting that end of the year sick of everything phase. He is very ready to finish this year. He will be done April 30th. I know April will be very busy for him so hopefully that will get his mind out of the funk he is in now.

He is very happy about his housing for next year, will schedule classes for fall in a couple of weeks, and we are waiting to see if he got into a pilot program his university is doing next year. They are taking 1,000 students for it. If there were more than that interested, it will be done through a lottery. Funny thing is, anything he has interviewed for-he has gotten (scholarships, prestigous state program his junior year, etc…). Not so sure how “lucky” he will be for the luck of the draw.

Me? I am desparate to leave my job at the end of the school year. I had an interview at an amazing place last week and it went very well. But I am freaking out. I am not sure the timing is right or I am scared to start at a new place when I know my current job so well. Who knows. It has been on my mind 24 hours a day and they haven’t even offered me the job. It is not my first choice of where I have been trying to get in, and it is not the type of work I want to eventually do, but like I said-it is an amazing place that “could be” nice to go to every day. Kinda hoping they offer the job to someone else, but want to keep me in mind if something else opens up.

So glad I have all this time on my hands this week to drive myself bonkers!! :-)

Hi Everybody!! Just checking in after a long time away. For those of you that might not remember my DS is on a gap year. I know I should probably be jumping in on the 2017 thread, but I just can’t seem to bring myself to do it. I just feel more comfortable here… and hey, what kind of expert advice am I going to get here this fall…TONS!!. I think it is just better to just stay with the experts:). My DS is starting to get excited about going to college soon. He is online looking at the FYP( first year program) classes and he is VERY excited about some of them. St Lawrence has the oldest FYP and it is amazing. They pick their FYP classes and then they are put in a FYP college with all the kids that choose that class. They all live together as well. I think it is a great way to get to form a small close knit group when you first start college. Anyway, getting excited about that.

We also just received our new FA letter and they reduced our total family contribution by $5000, so that was a welcome surprise. They held his merit aid of 25,000, so that was also re awarded. Gotta love SLU!!!

My DS got a job at Joshua Tree National Park( a famous rock climbing destination in CA) as an EMT and will also be on their search and rescue team. He works 3 days on, 4 days off. It is 3 hours away, so he also gets to stay in the firehouse bunks, so happy kid. He is planning a climb of El Capitan in Yosemite with a friend who is a navy seal. It is insanely scary( google it to see what I mean). He bought this thing called a " ledge sling" that you attach to the side of the mountain and sleep in it…UGH!! And I thought hiking the PCT was scary…the fun never ends here…

I miss you guys and can’t believe it has been a year since we were where those poor parents are in the 2013/2017 thread are. I have been lurking a lot because I have my last DS coming up on his Senior year…NOT AGAIN!!! God help me:)))

Nervous Nellie - do not let fear of the unknown hold you back from a better opportunity. You said in the first part you are desperate to leave - go! Opportunity is knocking on your door. For me I’d rather like the company and what they did then my specific and immediate duties. Get your foot in the door and you can probably move around some.

I can’t get over it snowing right now! We’re heading out next week for VA for my younger d college tours and months ago I was thinking we could stop at Busch Gardens. I don’t think that’ll be happening.

“I know I should probably be jumping in on the 2017 thread”

Tell him he better finish undergrad in 3 years or else you will lose face around here. :D

It should not be all that hard for him after PCT.

Of Course texas… that goes without saying!

5boys your kid constantly amazes me :)

It’s crazy to think year one will be all over in 5 weeks…

It’s fun to hear all of your updates!

We went down to Chicago last weekend to pick up S for his spring break and had a chance to see him playing with his team. It was nice to meet some of his teammates and see him having fun with them.

D rendezvoused with us there after her weeklong spring break road trip. It’s so great to see her so capable and to watch her preparing to enter the working world.

S still has one quarter left this year but so far academics seem to be going well for him. He managed to work out a very good-sounding housing situation for next year considering he hadn’t had any plans a week ago. It’s great to have him around for this week so we can catch up with him.

It is crazy to think this will be over in about 6 weeks!! I am getting a little stressed about housing. I am also a little stressed because she picked a major that requires graduate school to work in the field, and grad school admissions for this major are very very competitive. Her current school is opening a grad program this fall, so I am keeping my fingers crossed. My fear is that she won’t get in anywhere due to the competitive nature of these programs. We were already told that it’s easier to get in if you are willing to leave the area and go elsewhere in the country. I hope she has a backup plan just in case.

Does anyone know if you need those medical forms EVERY year for college, or was that just a freshman thing?

tozubri-I am not sure what medical forms you are talking about but I know for my S’s school he has to waive or accept the student health insurance each semester. If he does not waive it we will automatically be charged.

As far as medical forms BC (before college) all medical forms had to be filled out new each year for school (K-12).

Not sure if that helps you. :-)

tozubri – If we’re talking immunization records, I think once they’re on file, you’re good to go.

S is here for spring break this week. For some of us on the quarter system, it’s more like ten weeks to go to the end of freshman year. We’re thinking summer school to snag a couple of summer-only classes.

5boys – After El Capitan, what does he do for an encore? Is the US still training astronauts? :)

^ Yep. June 15th is the end! Is he staying back at NU or doing it elsewhere?

Back at NU.

D is on spring break this week. Love having her home! She’s got something going everyday with former classmates, the BF, grandparents. She’s also on the quarter system, so 11 weeks to go. Not the best for summer jobs, but lots of opportunities open up in August before the K-12 schools start and many college students are back at school.

Alright kids-moving us off page 3!!

Paid the last tuition payment of the freshman year today!! Woo-hoo!!

Went and got my hair colored today too! I never do anything for myself and I was looking like I am old enough to have a college freshman. Had to change that asap!!

D posted on facebook today that she had lunch with the 2 most important women in her life: her mom and grandma. I was SO touched! She truly is a darling daughter…

Love that Dentmom4!

SteveC - NU in the summer is wonderful, it actually becomes a beach town. Every student should try it at least once!

heading down to pick DD for a short easter break, but she did get some good news this morning - final acceptance to St.Andrews University for study abroad next spring. She is over the moon! I am planning my visit .,… hahaha.

Glad most of us get to spend a little time with the college students over the next few weeks. SHe just told me they have 30 days left until finals. WOW. this has gone by sooo fast!

Congrats to her, momofa12!
