My husband is up in Rochester now, going to pick up son with all his stuff. Finals are over and he is now a rising Soph. Son has a couple of flexible summer job options available and we will try to get a visit in to my parents on the other coast.

Well DD is coming home today - hooray. She needs to go back to school for commencement next week - boo. She will be staying in her room in her freshman dorm where the other rooms will be used to house parents and family members coming in for graduation. That should be an interesting experience for her! She will be home for good a week from Sunday. We are planning a trip to visit D1 in Argentina memorial day week and then she is scooping ice cream for the summer. We will have one month with 4 drivers with 4 jobs in 4 different directions and only 3 cars. There is good bus service - but I am thinking it might be easier if I just rent something for the month…

Congratulations to all on surviving the first year.

Congrats to all. We have all almost made it through the first year. Hooray to seeing your dear children
D is on the quarter system so she will not be done till Mid June.
1012 Argentina is a place that is on my list to one day visit.
My D has no clue as to what she will do this summer. It changes day to day. She will probably stay up in her college town and go to summer school. She is registered for two classes. She has options on two subleases of seniors who are done but have leases till Sept. She is talking about trying to get a job at Whole foods or Trader Joes. She isn’t sure about her major but doesn’t know what she would switch to. Her Calculus and Chem series are killers for her. She is a liberal arts girl trying to fit into a science world.
D’s big focus is she is trying to buy a new horse. She wants something young and spirited. I only wish she spent as much time studying as she does on this search. She is headed to our town this weekend to try out two horses. We will get to see her for one night since we are headed out of town.

Picking up D this afternoon for the weekend: big festival here that ends tomorrow so she can see many friends who are back and those still in HS, plus Mother’s Day. S1 is also coming in tonight for the same. Full house with 6!

DD is also not done until mid-June.

Congratulations on all new rising sophomores. D2 is taking finals now. She is coming home this Fri. Can’t wait. We have an extended family vacation in June, and a short trip back to old home for D2 to visit friends.

My sons’s on Quarters = in school until early June! But he did take the Old Man’s advice and call to get his summer job back. Not many opportunities for research intern as a Freshman, although I do think he could have pushed harder for it.

Good luck to those welcoming back their rising sophs. Don’t feel too bad for the kid though… he gets to watch baseball playoffs while his friends are back in school.

DS is up in the air on his 35 day adventure in India! Woo hoo! We got 2 1/2 days with him. More like a visit rather than all of us living under the same roof. However, he is going to have a wonderful adventure and I am excited to hear all his stories!

Congrats to all the rising sophomores! (Pretty crazy how time flies.)

Thrilled D1 is flying home now! D1 stored about half of her stuff on campus and her roommate is taking some of her stuff. She is coming home with 4 suitcases still. Yikes ! She will hostess at a local burger joint for the first 6 weeks and then she goes to Russia for a 4 week internship teaching kids English. Then family vacation, a week home and then back to school. Great freshman year, minus her appendix. I having feeling, we will see less of her next summer. Congratulations to all the rising sophomores! We made it through the first year.

DS finished his last final and worked his final shift on Friday. My dd and I drove out and spent this morning throwing things in boxes, bags and bins to help him move out by noon. Little sister is beyond excited to be spending time with her brother. They have been happily chatting and laughing together all evening. The year flew! Even my DS said he could’t believe how quickly the time seemed to go by this first year.

Congrats to all those who have finished - and hang in there for those still waiting it out!

DS came home Wednesday night and had his wisdom teeth extracted on Thursday, so he’s been laying low. Overall, the first year of college went very well.

Can you guys give me some advice? I’m living in Norman, Oklahoma this summer to both take chemistry and see if I’d like to transfer from Emory to University of Oklahoma (want to study geology, Emory doesn’t offer geology), and feel extremely homesick, probably because I don’t know anyone here and want the comfort of familiarity. My apartment mates are all 21-22 and are currently hanging out at the bar, which I legally can’t do. Does anyone have any advice on how to reduce homesickness after a major move?

Whenhen --

I think the best way to reduce homesickness is to really get involved in something. See what student groups are active this summer. Busy-ness helps, too, so you might want to consider a part-time job.

I can help connect you with the local Methodist student group…

The Methodist church on the north edge of campus is also hiring summer Children’s Day Out and Sunday nursery workers, which might be a way to earn money and meet some other people (mainly the other workers, some of which are college students).

Baseball and softball are both still playing, so you might want to see about attending some games.

Class starts Monday, right? A study group in your chemistry class will help, too.

Thanks. I’ve only just started looking for a job (already sent out two applications though
)

Unfortunately I’m not Methodist, so I don’t think the Methodist student group will be of much use. Btw, though Emory is a “Methodist” university, it’s only methodist in name. There are very few students at the school that are actually adherents to that branch of Christianity.

Also thanks for the suggestion about the study groups and the baseball and softball games. Time to learn how to throw a ball and not completely suck!

^whenhen - YOU’RE IN OKLAHOMA! :D

I have a very successful friend, who’s accomplished much in life. And still to this day he contends that the happiest day of his life, over all his accomplishments, was when he left Oklahoma.

Patience.

whenhen --

Don’t worry about learning to throw a ball for the baseball and softball games. I’m talking about their Division I teams, which are still playing. Both played Bedlam series (games against OSU) this weekend. There were lots and lots of people there to watch.

I didn’t suggest Methodist because of Emory, I suggested it because it’s the group I have a connection with.

Last week there were still people finishing spring exams and moving. I’m sure things and people will settle as the summer terms start this week.

You might also check out coffee shops on Main Street and in Campus Corner, or even Hastings/Panera/Barnes & Noble. You might find a hang out spot for you that’s not a bar and run into other people of similar age/interests.

I posted towards the end of the semester because my son had a really difficult time his first semester. I think he was trying to juggle too many things his first semester. I also think he was having a difficult time adjusting to being away from home. He gained weight. He felt like he had to be involved in everything. He did not have a set schedule. This time around he started scheduling everything (even exercise time). He took advantage of the free resources (writing lab, etc). Most of his grades are already in. Looks like he will end up with a minimum of 3.0 this time around. We are still waiting on two grades. One is a definate A but we are not sure about the other one. He had a couple of really difficult classes this time around so I’m really proud of him.
I feel bad that he had to experience that the first semester in order to get on the right track. However, I’m happy that he is on the right track now. Hope all of you enjoy having your kids home this summer. Happy Mother’s Day!!!

Great post Allboyz. So happy to hear he has turned it around. I frequently remind ours that time management is key. happy Mother’s Day.

Two more finals to go and then he comes home for two weeks! YAY - it will be nice to have a full house for a little while!!
I cannot believe he is 1/4 of the way through his college experience. Time has flown and he has grown so much this year. - as he said himself, it will be bittersweet saying goodbye to freshman year.

In the process of celebrating my friends’ kids graduations -both from college and soon high school. Any unusual or unexpected gifts that your kids got for high school graduation that they loved? even though we just went through it, i am having trouble thinking of good gifts

DD’s last final is Friday and she flies home Saturday!

itsthatime: I know it sounds like a cop out, but the kids always love the Target gift cards. If you know where they are going to school, you can get a gift card at their colleges’ book store.
