KarGaro - good luck on her tryouts- we love the Towson cheer and dance teams - they are always AMAZING to watch., Not sure how they manage to do it every year, but I know a LOT of hard work goes into it!!

DD is home, everything is piled in the dining room, and she spent saturday night with her high school bestie down at Goucher. ALso happened to run into one of her dance friends, and, as much as she loved this year, I think was really happy to see familiar faces!

Today she is heading to PSU york to register for some classes for summer, and starts her online class from JMU tonight. She will be busy but is hoping to still find a little time to work.

My mom has been sending me pictures of when I was little and telling me that she misses me and can’t wait until I come home.
Frosh yeah has been nice, but home will be even better :D

So classes are over but DS is doing a Medical Business Immersion program before heading home. He maintained an A average all year, became Rush Chairman and is now Treasurer of his fraternity and joined quite a few clubs. He kept his hs gf all year (big advantage for an all-male school) and seems to have grown up so much. This will be his last summer at home working, as next year will be research and the following year will be a medical trip plus applications to med schools if his path continues. he had his ups and downs, but feels like he made the right choice.

BlackRose101 – Welcome! I notice on your profile page that you’re a friend of CPUscientist3000. Did she tell you what a wonderful group of parents we are or did you find us on your own? :)

Lots of “oldtimers,” too. Stop by more often. Sometimes the crickets are so loud here, it’s hard to nap at my desk.

Yeaaaaah for geogirl’s new UR2017 girl! You’ll have several experienced UR parents to tap into here!

Another big yeaaaaah to oldfort’s daughter for being so gracious!

Welcome to BlackRose101!

So many of our offspring heading for home soon! Mine will show up at the end of the week. She was one of the earlier ones to launch last August. Will be strange to have her back home for so long after me being a solo empty nester since August except for her winter break. Then she returns a few days early in August to lead the orientation for her B0nner Schol@r program.

Also, I can’t say enough wonderful things about her college and the B0nner Schol@r program in particular. Since it covers our EFC, I’ve only paid for her books this year, plus her travel and dorm supplies. Every month I get a statement that says ‘you have a credit, send no money’. It’s truly been a blessing for an extremely hardworking low-income student to fulfill her college dreams at a place that’s a great fit for her. If you know some similar low-income HS kids who are open to attending a college they may not be too familiar with yet, steer them to look at the list of 20+ colleges that offer the
B0nner Schol@r program because it could be an awesome opportunity for them. It’s a selective, need-based, leadership development and community service scholarship that must be applied for so they’d need to become familiar with the deadlines each participating college has for the application on top of also being admitted to any of those colleges.

Another great thing about her college and the B0nner program is that all of her merit and need-based aid will follow her on a study abroad program. That wasn’t true of every college she was admitted to. Her college even offers airfare grants to students who can’t afford to pay for that for a study abroad experience because they don’t want those students to miss the opportunity. She has really landed in a great place for herself and has been enjoying all her college experiences a lot this year. So now she’ll work all summer at the local Japan America Society office to keep socking $$$ away for her junior year abroad. She’s already been banking much of her B0nner work-study money from this year for that. The girl likes to plan ahead and doesn’t want anything to get in the way of her study abroad year! LOL

In a couple of weeks, an exchange student who attended her college for the past year will be showing up to spend several days with us on her way home to Japan. My kid says that besides her internship this summer, she’ll also be self-studying her next year of Japanese so she can show up in the fall and jump up to the following year of Japanese then. Something about wanting to be at a certain advanced level before she’s doing her junior year study abroad in Japan so she can take a much higher level of
Japanese while there. Apparently her friend who’s going next year doesn’t have the right level of Japanese language skills to follow that particular plan himself and my kid wants to be certain that doesn’t happen to her too. Whatever!

Follow-up on a question from texaspg regarding converting our pool into a Japanese tea garden. I haven’t been able to get over here since that question was asked on 4/25!
No, silly! Her college was supposed to be updating the Japanese garden on their campus this year so hopefully there’s no pressing need for her to make one at our house!
Although filling in the evil pool could be an excellent location for it… what with it already being so well fertilized and all. ;)

It’s so nice to see all of the good news posts. Congrats to everyone. Congrats, again to geogirls D. UR is a great school and is definitely on the radar for my 2015 S. What a gracious letter from your D, oldfort. There is a lot ahead in her future. Creekland, your S is an impressive young man to garner two lab jobs this summer. Woody35, so happy for your D. And thanks for the info about the scholar program. This sounds great for future reference. I love to see posts from Blackrose101 and other students. My D would never post or read anything on this forum.

Still no news on internships or jobs this summer. I think I will try to help out by asking around locally and check the nearby strip mall. I have told D that since so many students are out at least a month ahead of her that maybe she should have started filling out applications for jobs at least a month ago.

My son got home last night and I am guessing he will sleep most of the day today. Hard to believe that he is now a sophomore. Freshman year went by so fast (for me)!

Ugh. My D has a final scheduled for the very last time-slot (7-10pm on Fri 5/17). I’m planning to drive up (8 hr drive) that Friday to fetch her. I have a sneaking suspicion I’ll be up all night helping her pack up. She has to be out of the dorms by 10am on Sat 5/18.

SteveC-- add me to the Midwest College fan club. My D is thriving. It was pretty cool when a whole lounge of kids get up to hug her goodbye yesterday

DS is in the air on the way home! Freshman year is done and it was wonderful. He hasn’t slept in 36 hours, but he is done. He will be home for 2 days and then we take him to the airport and off to India he goes. Congrats to Seiclan too! So glad to hear how great Woody’s D’s freshmen year went. It is so nice to see all “our kids” shine.

Thank you for our future Rocheser welcome! DD has two more AP exams and then maybe she can breath again. Or at least maybe complete some ofher missing assignments? Senior year is hard!

My D had her last final yesterday. She will be working at her university this summer.

Since we live overseas and will be in the U.S. in July, we hadn’t planned on her coming home. But she called last week and said how hard it was to see all of her friends going home. Fortunately, I had enough miles for a trip, so she will be here on Tuesday and will stay a week!!! We are all excited since it wasn’t planned. We will also spend time with her in the U.S. in July and August.

I enjoyed reading everyone’s updates. Woody, the scholarship sounds great and how nice that she has had so many opportunities to continue her Japanese studies.

It is amazing just how quickly this year went by. We now have sophomore or practically sophomores for those still finishing. My guy has one final left this coming Saturday. He also casually mentioned he turned down yet a third lab job after getting a call from the leader. He chose UR because he was told there were oodles of research ops. I guess he can confirm it. I’m looking forward to our visit this Sunday (but I think we’ve axed the idea of going to NF right now…)

Hey all! The year is officially over and S is upstairs sleeping as we speak. We had the joy of packing up his extremely dusty room and took two of his friends out to eat. (one of the kids we took out is a poster here…hehehehe)

Since he’s working for me I’m giving him a week off til he starts. Sharing the car is already showing signs of difficulty. He keeps forgetting he can’t just come and go as he pleases.

It’s great to hear the homecoming stories! D will be home this weekend and requested that we prepare her favorite foods. My kids always teased me for my mediocre culinary skills and now that they’ve been away for school, I suppose they’ve realized that I can cook afterall.

This summer, she’ll be working in the DA’s office (unpaid) and also her old job at the golf course. I will also be driving her to a few tournaments.

eyeamom, I am not looking forward to sharing my car with D, either. She’s leaving her car at school and will have to work with me on car priviledges. She hopes her uncle will lend her his second car. We’ll see…

D’s minivan is having issues at 140K miles. She was supposed to get H’s civic this summer and he would buy a new car, but the civic was totaled last fall (H hit ice, spun, smacked guard rail), so new car bought then. D2 starts driver’s ed this summer and will need a practice car. Guess we are looking at buying 2 additional cars…Cha ching, cha ching.
