Parents of the HS Class of 2012 - New beginnings

Congratulations Creekland! Fingers crossed that it made a huge impact. Now you can get back to your regular life.

5boys great to hear the update. Congrats on the grandkid and the acceptance for your 2014er. My D1 has a good friend at Kenyon who just loves the school.

D2 is happy and busy. After the end of the drama department musical she went directly to rehearsals for a department drama. She is also in a web series conceived and written by friends and filmed by the university TV. Premiering March 10! In between she is managing her classes, declared her majors and signed on with advisors.

I paid her last tuition payment for this year in February. Major milestone for us since next year will represent the first time in 8 years that annual tuition costs are going down (private HS). Also, starting to make plans for D1s graduation. Hard to believe, and only 2 years away for the 2012 gang.

@Creekland - so happy for you that this is over for you! Woohooo And it sounds like your kids are set

My son casually mentioned he broke up with his girlfriend of a year and a half. He comes home for spring break this Friday so I’ll try and get more info then.

My younger also has picked her college so we are on the countdown for the empty nest now.

If bookmouse is still taking input about her son. I generally believe graduate school should be relevant to what one wants to do in the future, but in bookmouse’s son case, I think an accelerated master program would be beneficial. Many companies do pay up for people with higher degree in CS and also bring them in at a higher level. Later on, even when applying for internal jobs, someone with a master degree may have a leg up. It is not always the case with other professions. The trick here is knowing what he wants to specialize in because he may get pegged for one particular area when he is looking for a job, and it may turn out not to be what he wants. If he has been doing internships then he’ll have a better idea what he likes to do within CS.

CONGRATULATIONS CREEKLAND!!! Woohoo!!! I brought in little bottles of alcohol for my radiation team on my last visit. They were as happy as I was! LOL! I am glad this phase is over and I am sending you good thoughts as you wait out the next three months.

5boys - Congratulations on the GIRLGrandbaby! Finally you get to buy some pink. Or not.

@geogirl1 - I brought in Lindt truffles… :wink:

Happy for you creekland.

Here’s to good health, new life & the future!!!

Great to hear it, Creekland! I’d been wondering how you were doing and know you don’t like posting about it on the 2014 thread.

Heard from BarnardGirl today- sounded like midterm meltdown time. Stressing about housing for next year and grades but when I asked if she’d reach a particular GPA, she thought she would get that easily, so it’s not that bad. She’s trying to get a few different positions that would allow her to stay in the city this summer.

So happy for you, Creekland!

Thrilled for you Creekland!

Thanks all - and yes, I prefer keeping this off the 2014 board as that ought to be centered on our kids rather than us old fogies with health issues (IMO).

The only thing that needs to get back to normal is my appetite. I don’t mind it being off (literally, never hungry) as there are pounds I wish to lose (and this makes it easy!). But… the only foods that are tolerable are “junk” foods. Eating a small cheeseburger and about a dozen fries from McDonalds sits well as does almost anything with a good amount of salt and fat. Trying to eat almost anything healthy does not. Even plain water didn’t sit well for a time (no other drink did either - sorry kidneys!). It boggles my mind, but it doesn’t take long to defer to the body’s whims, as I prefer that to feeling awful digestively. I’m guessing there may be a grain of truth to “comfort foods,” but still…

In a couple of weeks - when everything is supposed to be back to normal (more or less), my plan is to switch to a super healthy diet to avoid “other” health issues… Normally, we tend to eat fairly healthy, but cheat on a few meals or side items per week - soon I want less (or maybe no) cheating for a while to counteract the past few week’s intake. I’m actually really wanting the healthier foods (fruits, veggies) that are normally part of our diet - I just have to convince the body of the brain’s desire. :-w

Creekland, so glad to hear that you have the treatments behind you. Best wishes for good health soon.

5 boys, your son and your family sound like they are doing very well. Good to hear the update!

We saw our D for the weekend recently, and H and I were happy that she was able to spend some time with us.
Like all of your kids, she is busy, busy with all the same things most are - school work, extra curricular activities, etc. My step-D and her family think that they know where they will be next year finally. Her husband thinks he has found a good position. That has been a long saga. I know for those of you with kids still waiting for college acceptances it seems like that is quite a wait, but I will say that he has been from pillar to post trying to find a permanent job. They have traveled back and forth across the country looking at places, and we are glad that it will soon be all settled. They won’t be too near us, and it is a worse trip for us than their current location, but at least they will be settled for a while.

I am looking forward to an end to this cold, snow filled winter.

My youngest DS had winter break two weeks ago and we all headed down to Miami to visit DS1. DS1 still had school and work, but we were able to fit in lots of fun adventures. I told him that I would take him to the grocery store and /or Target to buy him some food and house items as a small treat while we were there. I asked where he wanted to go. He said either Whole Foods or Publix. WF has a lot of specialty items that I know he likes, but never buys because he can’t afford it, so I drove to WF. HOLY COW! We checked out with a $400 grocery bill!!! I had not planned on that level of “treat”. But, at least I know he has fresh fruit and veggies for a while. We also had tons of fun diving, visiting and eating. What a great retreat for us snow bound northeasterners!

DS is burning the candle at both ends. It is really heartwarming to see him build a life for himself, not just go to class, but be involved in research, interning, working, and figuring out about what path he wants to take after graduation. He has always been “mature” and as a parent it is just so wonderful to see him build his life. He is happy and so are we. I don’t even ask about grades anymore (what a change for me!). I know he has got it under control or even if it isn’t, the tradeoffs between grades and internships and research is his choice and he is making great choices!

Great to hear that you DS is doing so well geogirl1. Happiness is what we most want for our kids.

DS just found out he got into his top theme house for next year. I guess it is insanely competitive and there was only 1 spot and he got it:) He is SO excited and I think it will be a great place for him for the next 3 years. He was fine in the dorms… he lucked out and his roommate left pretty early on, so he has had this HUGE room all to himself the whole year. Works out well with the GF I’m sure…wink, wink. He is really happy about having such a great house and a kitchen, and the biggest deal is that we are letting him take his car next year. Everything just keeps getting better and better for him.

Loved your story glido… it is SO nice to see our kids become their own people with their own lives. Sometimes I wish I could go back and live my life over again;0

D leaves next week for third quarter in Spain! So much to do before then! Finals are this Sunday through Tuesday, she has to move out of the dorm (I will pick her and all her stuff up), and then she flies out Wednesday, a 3 hour drive to the airport from our home. H will drive down this weekend to pick up some stuff and deliver the boxes and bins for her to pack. Whirlwind. She will be gone almost 3 months. I miss her already!

@dentmom4
D1 spent close to 6 months in Argentina - so I can relate to the missing her. My advice - Skype or FaceTime - because seeing her is so much better than just hearing her - and GO VISIT!!

Do mid-term meltdowns ever stop? (After they graduate maybe??) She’ll be home for Spring Break on Friday. We’ll be celebrating my finishing my Master’s degree, her brother’s 18th birthday and hopefully a college acceptance or two for him too!

Hi All!

We have been a quiet group lately - everyone must be busy!

Creekland - so happy to hear you are done with treatment and doing well. Great news! Also, congrats to all of you with good news and Barnard Mom, hope the meltdown was short-lived.

S2 is home for break which has been great. He considered going away, but decided against it. He is busy applying for internships - a task he began a few weeks ago but has yet to hear anything. He is considering taking a 4 week summer class in Italy, but that would eliminate any chance of accepting an internship if one is offered. He is so confused about what to do. We are also on the fence. I know how important an internship is, yet if he turns down the Italy class and no internship comes through, that would be a bummer. The Italy deposit is due after break, so he needs to make a decision soon.

Any thoughts? Are most of your kids doing internships this summer? Working? Traveling? Still deciding ;)??

My daughter’s been applying for internships. She’s made it to the interview stage for 3, but no offers yet.
