Parents of the HS Class of 2012 - New beginnings

My guy is still deciding about summer. A big part will be whether or not he’s been accepted to either of two research positions he applied for in Germany. If not, he wants to do a stint on a Mercy Ship, then will work somewhere locally I think. Right now he’s spending Spring Break in Haiti.

I have no clue what to suggest about the Italy class. It’s a tough decision.

S is home for spring break and we just had the summer talk. He needs to take a class over the summer - when you change your major it takes a lot of perseverance to make it in 4 years. So much easier to know your major the day you start, regardless of what any college tells you.

Besides the class he’s working on a project with a group of friends. They’ve been working on it for over a year. He knows after this year he needs to do an internship after junior year.

D will be working over the summer and saving for “semester abroad” next spring. DW and her are heading to LA for a little girls trip R&R. All is well.

Hi all,

Dwhite, maybe your son should go for the Italy trip/class. He can always do an internship next summer. Any chance the trip deposit is refundable?

My son is returning to his prior internship with a nice raise. He worked there one semester during the school year as well, so he has made some good bonds there and it’s a great company. This semester he has had a really tough course load with 16 credits of engineering classes, two of them senior level classes. So I am glad he has just been relaxing at home for spring break (as well as finishing up some reading for classes that got pushed aside in order to study for midterms). Also he has discovered Hackathons at various universities, and those often involve going away for a weekend and spending 24 or 36 hours of straight programming.

Creekland, congrats on completing your treatment and all the best to you!

Barnardmom, congrats on earning Masters and good luck to your son.

Hard to believe our kids are almost half way through. D2 is our last one, so we are going to miss all the hoopla (maybe not).
D2’s spring break is later this year, end of Mar. We are going to Spain for a week as our family vacation. D1 is going to take some time off from work also. D2 is going to study abroad in London next fall. It is not as exotic as going to other places, but she’ll use it as her base to do some traveling. I am hoping to get into a dorm so we wouldn’t need to look for an apartment. As it turns out, her tuition for study abroad is going to be 50% of her tuition at home. Her school only charges 2500 additional as a fee and she would pay her host college directly. London is expensive, so she could use the saving as extra spending money. As far as this summer, she is fairly certain she’ll be working at a legal aid office in NYC. She is getting the internship through her school (course). She won’t get paid much, but it will be something to put on her resume.

It is hard to believe they are half way through - I think I will miss the hoopla! Sounds like some of the kids have their summer planned, which is great.

S2 has been in contact with the Italy professor (it is a program through his university) and they are going to meet after break. The prof has been awesome and fully understands his dilemma. As of now, he is willing to hold a spot for him as long as he can and will also find out about a refund on the deposit. There is a wait-list for the program, so perhaps that is why he can be flexible. We shall see what happens…

bookmouse - 24-36 hours of straight programming??? Wow, that’s impressive! Imagine, spending 24-36 hours straight doing anything at our age!!!?? Oh, to be young.

Oldfort - that is great that tuition is less - I have several friends who said the same about their kid’s study abroad tuition. Darn nice.

Barnardmom - congrats!!

D has been home for the week. We had the summer talk-- she is getting some applications in. Her 1st choice though is to nanny again for the family she worked for last summer.

@mathinOKC – my D is in the same boat. Good preliminary results, but no summer plans yet. The applications are all in, and interviews have gone well, but nothing yet. I’m told that it’s a tad early, and last year she got 3 offers within the same week, so I should chill out.

It’s good to have D home

Hi everyone. I have been gone from the boards for a while. My son is also looking for summer internships in engineering. It is harder to find ones for the summer between Soph and Jr year. Most want students after Jr. year is completed. I set an email alert to the Glassdoor which is a meta search engine and searches other sites. I screen the results and pass them on to him to apply. Saves him some time since you have to read all the job descriptions to even figure out if he would be qualified.

He was home for spring break week last week and left yesterday to drive back. It sure went by fast but it was real nice to see him.

Just picked up D’s stuff from the dorm; off to Spain tomorrow! She is coming later today–has to say goodbye to the BF for 3 months. Tonight we pack a rolling duffle and medium backpack for study abroad. She seems pretty happy so I assume finals went okay.

D just made the petition to her department heads to accept study abroad credits from the University of Edinburgh for next spring. She only needs 3 of 4 to agree to make it worth while. And her Academic Adviser walked her through the whole thing. Yay? :-S

D got to Spain safely and LOVES her homestay placement so far. She was worried about the food because she is vegetarian, but her madre is respectful of her diet and happy that she is a healthy eater without meat. Big relief for her there. 15 from her school are in the city, all living within 0-10 miles of each other. Classes start tomorrow, all taught in Spanish.

Hi everyone, it’s been a while. Creekland, glad to see you are done with your treatment. DS was just home for spring break and we really enjoyed spending time with him. He will not be home this summer as he will be doing two internships in two different cities. It’s a packed summer and he will be able to do two things that he cares very deeply about.

Congrats, Giterdone, sounds like a great opportunity for her to experience Scotland. Dentmom4 that’s awesome that your daughter can experience a real home in Spain with her vegetarian diet intact- as a vegetarian myself, I’m glad people around the world are open to it. Whenever I travel it is interesting to see how difficult or easy it is to get vegetarian food - I have found only Germany to be less veg-friendly than the US so far. Mimk6, congrats on your son’s summer internships- I’m surprised he can fit in two different internships in two cities!

Creekland, you dont know me. I am just wishing you the best.

Aww - thanks? I do appreciate it.

Today we get to head north to see middle son! We decided to take a quick trip since we missed seeing him over spring break - and this weekend coincides with my grandmother’s 90(something) birthday which we’ll also stop in on as we return home - so it’s as good an excuse as any.

Summer is now up in the air for my guy as he didn’t get selected to the summer research programs (overseas) that he was trying for. I need to remember to be sad for him… while secretly being a “bad” mama and hoping we now will get to see him more instead. He is going to be an RA in a freshman dorm next year, so will have to return to college early for that and he still wants to volunteer some time on a Mercy Ship, so time will tell what happens.

Just checking in, I read all the comments, but there really isn’t anything of interest to report. Unless of course you care that I’m on my last invisalign tray. Extra wide smile for my straightened teeth. My son is just busy and completely immersed in his school world. He’ll be home for the summer and has some things cooked up. Since he’s a little off on the timing the internships will have to wait until next summer but he seems to be making good connections and on top of that stuff. This from the kids who 2 years ago I had to beg to turn in homework so he’d pass and graduate.

We are once again facing housing drama with BarnardGirl. They have a 5 person group and the seniors have snatched up the 5 person suites except in the dorm where she is now and she would prefer not to be in that dorm. So she might break off and try for a single but her group will be mad because it will mess them up. There has to be an easier way!

She was selected as an alternate RA for Barnard’s Young Women’s Leadership Institute (YWLI)- one of their pre-college summer programs- last month. Today she was offered a spot as an RA. In the meantime, she had an interview for an internship with a major publishing company in NYC so now she doesn’t know what to do. She has a second interview on Tuesday but has to give a decision on the RA thing on Monday. The RA position gives her free housing plus a stipend for living expenses. The internship, if she gets it, pays by the hour but she’d have to pay for housing too. YWLI is what made her fall in love with Barnard. She has always considered going into editing and publishing.

D’12 is back at school. In the “stretch drive” to the end of Sophomore year. =D> Time flies!!
