Hmmm. DD is due to fly out Wednesday AM for her semester abroad. Wondering what will happen if her flights are cancelled post the big blizzard. Meanwhile told her to be sure to get all last shopping done today since Tuesday sounds to be a hide in the house day.
1012mom - If her flight is cancelled then she will be booked on the next available flight, which could be days from Wed. I would try to change her flight now to Thu or Fri. There won’t be any change fee and try to do it online if you could because it would be hard to get through agent now. By the time the flight is cancelled it is too late to try to change. This has worked out well for me a few times.
A text conversation with my dearest BarnardGirl around 3 pm, well after the snow started falling in NYC:
Me: So you got a major snow day?
BarnardGirl: Yeah, they closed the school at 2 and it’s closed tomorrow for sure too.
Me: Do you have food?
BarnardGirl: No, I’m going shopping in a little bit.
Me: I think you should go soon. Remember Sandy? It’s going to be like that.
BarnardGirl: Ok, I’ll go now.
Half an hour later:
BarnardGirl: The store is too packed, I’m just going to eat Roommate’s food.
Me: Do you have things to contribute to a combined food effort?
Hypo: Yeah.
eye roll Kids! She did the same thing during Sandy but at least there was food service without her having to go outdoors. She lives several city blocks from the dining hall now. She’s not going to be walking there for food in 55 mile an hour winds with 2-4 inches of snow falling per hour.
Seamless for Chinese food.
Popping in after a couple of years to say happy new year! For all those who may remember my last update - I am definitely doing better than I was back then, but it is an uphill battle.
She actually did get Chinese in the middle of the worst of the blizzard. Kids!
CPU!!! So delighted to see you checking back in. Anything to share yet or going day by day? You have a terrific support group on this thread filled with people willing to help you sort out situations you may have, offer a suggestion or opinion, or just give you virtual hugs.
Hi CPU!! We would love to hear an update from you. Kuddos to you for hanging in there!
First off, I will gladly accept all the virtual hugs you have to give!!
Hm…updates…it’s been about 2 years right?? I don’t remember what I said last, but I have finished my major requirements! So now I have to tackle those pesky general institution requirements that I’ve been putting off
I’ve decided to pick up a minor also and I’m excited about that! I am taking the GRE this weekend and gathering recommendation letters for graduate school (feels like just yesterday I was applying to college!!). I hope to be doing research again this summer and writing my grad school personal statements so I can apply as early as possible and snag as many scholarships as I can! I have decided to pursue my love of art by taking a non-credit art class this semester, and I hope to take more each semester until I graduate!
I just realized how many exclamation points I used…I think that’s because I’m beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel
Hope your kids have been doing well and weathering the college storm.
Took GRE today, went great! Glad I forced myself to take it so I won’t regret it later in life…
Hi there @CPUscientist3000! Glad you checked-in and congratulations on doing so well on GRE. I am sure you can’t believe how quickly these past years have gone! You have a bright future - your virtual moms are proud.
And, to everyone else - hope the kids are still thriving and doing well. My guy is well although is having some health issues we are working through. Health issues and college are not a good mix for either him or me. I sometimes think he handles this better than I do…
Also, big congrats to @oldfort on your new life adventure. How is it going so far?
All the best to everyone and their families!
Good to hear from you CPU. What are you planning to do for masters?
CPU glad to hear from you! Hope you are enjoying college a bit more now that you have settled in. Oldfort congrats and good luck on the new adventures.
Despite two rounds of cancelled flights and having to add an extra stop my travel challenged DD made it to her study abroad program on the appointed day (Those of you who have been around the thread awhile may remember that her first trip abroad as a HS junior was extended several days due to a volcano eruption closing the airports, and her travel karma has not improved). She has very little wifi and phone service at the moment so I am just going on sporadic texts. She does seem happy and enjoying the program.
Texaspg- social work! I am actually looking at a couple schools in Texas
BarnardMom’s post made me laugh. Kids, indeed! Of course having said that, we made no advance reservations for Valentine’s Day so it looks like it’s going to be Chinese food for us tonight.
Glad to hear all is well, CPU! And happy Valentine’s Day to all. My S came home for the weekend and I hadn’t seen him since Just after Thanksgiving due to his mini-study abroad thing. How far he has come! Just hearing about him talk about his adventures makes me happy for him. I can’t believe they are going to be seniors next semester.
My girl went from the flu last week to a stomach bug this weekend. This was following pneumonia in January. Not a great term so far.
@2016BarnardMom - sorry to hear about her illnesses. Hope she bounces back soon. I feel your pain though - having them sick, or struggle in any way is so horrible from a distance. We all hate that phone call!!
D2 is home this weekend as well. We went out to a nice dinner last night to catch up on her life.
Last semester we talked about having her take it easy this semester so she could focus on her LSAT. It all went out the window. She is taking 4 classes, one independent study, heading up a summer program at her work study, be on the graduation committee and applying for some prestigious scholar program that I am not supposed to talk about. Her LSAT is going to require 16 hrs/week of her time. I am not sure how she is going to do all of that.
On a personal note, my job is going well after 2 weeks. We are all doing well in our new norm. Glad to hear all of our 2012 kids are busy and engaged with the next chapter. I am keeping my fingers crossed for the kids who are applying for their internships this summer.
I will say my D has had interviews with two different really great companies for summer internships! Keeping my fingers crossed
One of them is known to make offers to their interns for jobs after graduation and that would be a beautiful thing- to start senior year knowing there’s a job offer already!
Her sorority has recruitment/rush in the winter term and at least 49 of those girls ended up with the flu by the end of the week. My D did go to health service and got tamiflu and got over it fairly quickly. She’d also had the flu shot.
The stomach thing hit her out of the blue. She’s doing better now as it seems it was a 24 hour bug. She was tired yesterday but I’m sure she’ll perk up after getting re hydrated and eating a few meals.
