Last of DD’12’s tuition checks going out today! \m/ 1 down and 1 to go (DS’15)
Ahhh, that was us in December – tuition free after 11 years!
@sdjdorlo, my son is a film major/business minor, so we know it would be an uphill climb compared to STEM majors or finance, for example. He wants to work in corporate videography (yup, that’s a thing). It’s just really hard to be sending out so many applications and not even having them acknowledged. DH often does interviewing and says that is pretty typical in business, but the Mom in me wants a ;($& confirmation code! But we soldier on!
Great News 1012mom!
Congrats 1012 Mom! Where is she headed?
Central America. So the good news is I can visit and she can probably come home for Thanksgiving, etc.
So I had kind of forgotten about this site, it’s been 3 years since I last posted. I loved reading and catching up with
all the familiar posters. So much happy news, some struggles and survival stories. My D was accepted into a 5 year accounting program last spring so is working on undergrad and masters together. She will complete and graduate with both degrees in May 2017, so I am a little jealous for those of you that have made the last payment. Good news is she did her internship last fall and has already accepted a job.
Congratulations to @rushedmom 's DD’12! What a great opportunity.
In these last days of being a college parent (after 14 years straight of being one) I find myself back on CC wanting to see what your kids are up to. So many wonderful things. Congratulations 1012mom! And congrats to Oldfort’s daughter and texaspg’s daughter on their admissions as well as the many kids who are moving on to grad school and other wonderful opportunities. It feels like we were just posting about bedding and moving and final decisions about where to go to college. How did it all go by so quickly?
Congratulations to all the graduates! Wow, mimk6, 14 years straight as a college parent. This is a big transition for your too. My own D ended up completing both a STEM degree and a foreign language degree. She’s accepted a post teaching English in Europe for the next school year, during which she hopes to firm up her subsequent plans, which will probably more likely build on her STEM degree. She just hasn’t stopped being a BWRK who finds it hard to settle on one thing. I’m excited for her about the year abroad, although we will miss her after having her in state for college.
@weatherga I feel your happiness tinged with sadness at your daughter going far from home for a great opportunity after being used to have her close - my DS is going to the opposite coast for grad school and it’s a combined MS & PhD program so it will take about five years. I think I’ll be going through empty nest feelings again because although he lived on campus for undergrad he was nearby. However, the other part of me knows what a fantastic opportunity it is and, after seeing the UCLA campus, I’m a little jealous that I’m not going myself! (Hm, maybe I need to pursue a second Master’s degree for myself after all?)
@Everyone- congratulations on your offspring going on to have wonderful opportunities and adventures! I think we owe ourselves a pat on the back for launching them well
@1012 - Fulbright - wow. that is great!
@mimk6 - 2012 kid not doing a masters? Younger D starts college this year and she has big plans too for next 8 years or more! Btw, doesn’t medical school count? I thought one of yours will be there a while.
@weatherga - Teaching English with STEM - sounds pretty cool. What is her foreign language?
@bookmouse - Is he going to school in LA?
@Texaspg, my 2012 kid is not going straight to grad school, wants to work for a bit and have a good reason if/when he decides to go. I do have one kid in an MD/Ph.D program and one who will begin an MBA program next year, so I guess in some ways I’m still a college parent (still have graduations to attend!), but being a grad school parent feels different than being the parent of an undergrad. Does your younger daughter also want to go to medical school? Where is she going to college?
@mimk6 - I believe that as long as I need to make any payments for the kid, they are still in college.
The younger one paid deposit at Columbia and plans on med school. None of us are sure she will get there (many who know her think she is more suitable for law). Since I was not sure about the older one either, we will wait for 3 years to see what happens.
MBA sounds cool. Is the kid going to east or staying on west coast?
Hi everyone! DD was ready to push the button to her law school choice when she she received an acceptance from her top choice. After negotiating for more $ with both schools, she has decided to attend #2. It will be nice to have her closer to home for the next 3 years.
Graduation is next weekend!
@texaspg, I hear you on payments, but I don’t have any for grad schools as the MSTP is fully-funded and the other kid is paying for her degree, has some grants, etc. West Coast for MBA, although she had a very tempting offer on the east coast, but she’s wanting to stay on the West Coast where she is already settled.
Also, @texaspg , congrats on Columbia. Will your girls be close enough to see each other?
@texaspg Yes, in LA - UCLA.
Just got back from the trip for graduation. I am with the rest of you, not sure what happened to the last 4 years. DS starts his first research rotation in an MSTP program in mid June so we will have him home for a month before moving him in for his next round of schooling.
Looks like mimk6 and I will still be here on CC for a number of years to come. Not sure where mimk6’s kid is in the rotation but MSTP’s normally take 7 or 8 years to complete both the MD and the PHD.
@MemphisGuy Congrats to your son on his graduation and the beginning of his MSTP journey.
Commencement for D is next Sunday. She is walking but won’t complete her degree until December when she finishes her semester of student teaching. She will be student teaching close to her school so now she is apartment hunting.
