Parents of the HS Class of 2012 - Original

D is going to school across the country so I haven’t figured out how or where to shop for her dorm essentials. I suppose we could do it here and have it mailed to her after move in but I’m looking forward to helping her set things up there. Her dorm will be different from my S who chose an on campus apartment w/ private bedrooms. D will be sharing a room as well as a community bathroom. That means a bath tote, shower slippers, etc. Things I didn’t have to worry about w/s since he’s a boy and also just a 2 hour drive
away.

Okay, maybe too much of a fussy mom question here. For those who have kids going to a traditional dorm room - shared room, hall bath, basic utilitarian set up. What do you do to cozy the place up a bit? Not that my son would allow too much in the frills department but I don’t want him feeling like he’s in jail either.

DS will be taking lots of pictures and posters with him wot make it feel like his own. After choosing a gray comforter, I worry about that prison chic look myself. Of course, his first semester will be spent in a shared dorm with 25 people so it will more closely resemble army barracks or a prison than a normal college dorm.

Well someone on the 2016 FB group apparently figured out where DD’s school had posted room assignments on the student accounts. Notification has not yet been sent, but sure enough there was a dorm and room number posted on DD’s account. If it is correct she got her preference of a an all-frosh dorm.

In terms of coziness. D1 put up pictures from home and of friends, a pennant from her old HS, and a favorite painting. Even the non-frilly boys would likely find a big bolster pillow for the bed useful if they like to read or study on the bed. D1 bought D2 a giant plush elephant pillow (school mascot). D1 and her roomate collected magnets for their refrigerator. The boys may go for shot glasses, concert ticket stubs, bumper stickers or some other souvenir of their adventures around campus and around town, but in general collections of some sort seem to be common.

Eyemamom and MizzBee, even though S had a private room in an on campus apartment, the place still looked like an army barracks w/grey comforter from home and lots of black, grey and chrome accessories. S did bring his area rugs from home and his roomies liked them. They were black, no flashy colors for S. They seemed to cozy up the place.

D wants to bring her white fluffy area rugs to her dorm but it’s a logistics issue. Plus, I can’t picture her ever taking them outside to shake them out so I’m nixing that idea. She’s more excited about decorating her room than S was.

lilmom- DS is also a plane flight away from school. My DH and I will fly out with him and stay a few days in a hotel as a mini vacation for us. We will fly down with 6 suitcases filled with stuff for DS. We will pack our stuff in the carry ons. I already bought a comforter, sheets and towels for DS (huge sale at the PB outlet, yeah for us!!!). We will wash those and put them is a suitcase. We have one of those plastic trunks for camp, and we might fly with that as one of the 6 suitcases. DH and I will bring the suitcases back with us packed one inside the other when we fly home (except for the trunk). DS has a couple of soft duffle bag like bags that he will keep for flying home with over breaks. We figure most of that stuff will stay in storage over the summer. The hard stuff, like hard plasitc drawers, laundry baskets, storage containers and matteress pads, we will go to our local BB&B, pick them out and order them for pick up at the BB&B near his school. If needed we will go to the local Target and get whatever else is remaining. DS’s school has microwaves, refrigerators and rugs for sale on line that we then pick up when we get there. DS is buying the frig, his roomie is buying the microwave, we will figure out the rug when we are there. Since they don’t have a vacuum, I’m hesitant about the rug. :0

Mom2jl – no AP scores here, either (coastal So.CA). I was hoping they’d come last week as my D2012 will be here briefly today and then I don’t expect to see her again for at least 2 weeks. She doesn’t want me to open her mail while she’s gone. But I may have to press for an exception on this. She’ll need to know her scores before she can complete class registration on 7/20.

DH picked up yesterday’s mail, and of course he threw away the BBB coupon. Thanks to y’all I knew it was coming, and was able to dig it out of the recycling bin!

Wow - that sounds kind of cool! I think S’12 would be overloaded by it, but my younger son would love the social aspect of it!

Hmm - good question. S took a 6X8 rug to his dorm room. Maybe a blanket or pillowcase that is either familiar and sentimental or shows something he likes? Posters? A way to play music out loud if he’s into his music? Pictures on his computer screensaver? Mixes for tea, hot chocolate, or cider and a favorite coffee mug? A big poster sized picture of mom? OK, just kidding - that probably wouldn’t be a good idea. S’s girlfriend made him a hand made blanket/comforter for school - I thought that was nice!

1012mom - did your D find out who her roommate is? Glad to hear she got her dorm choice!

I’ll second what lilmom said about shower slippers - a must have!

Ok, I just walked in on D. She decided to go through her closet and purge! I should be thrilled but instead I’m on the verge of tears…maybe it’s because she’s getting rid of all of her high school golf shirts and hats…the end of one phase of her life…

Awww - ((((((hugs)))))) to lilmom!

No AP scores arrived in the mail here, although we can’t be more than a 90 minute drive from the College Board! Doesn’t really matter, S found out from both his HS teacher and his college website, so he was happy.

I’m stranded in the house today since everyone else has taken the vehicles, so I’m purging winter clothes, boots, shoes…I’m going to start on toys and books next.

Financial aid/loan stuff is on our to-do this weekend, too.

I had just dropped my D off for a day at Kings Dominion with the boyfriend - no thank you on that one - it’s over 100 today. Walked into Lowe’s to look at blinds when S calls - mom, it’s about 80 degrees and getting hotter every minute in the upstairs.

Sure enough when I get home the new geothermal is once again not working upstairs and it’s supposed to get to 105. I figure this is an emergency so we call the hotline and the repair guy actually showed up in an hour. Poor guy had to go up in the attic to find the problem. Our attic no joke has to be 140. Luckily it’s fixed (dh said it has the opposite of what the bends is) something to do with water and bubbling and there was such a big leak into the tray that it stopped running to prevent a major water leak. Anyway - it seems fixed now thank heavens. After losing power last weekend I was in no mood to deal with that again.

S had his big zombies vs humans in Northern Virginia postponed today because of the heat, but it’s schedule for next Sunday.

This week his big job is taking care of his old english teachers cats while he’s out of town.

Does anyone have experience with Residence Hall Linens or rhl.org for dorm room supplies? Quality, durability, etc.?

student4ever- a friend used this rhl for her S this past year and said it held up very well.

So for those looking at posters, we had a couple of our photos from vacation made poster size by Walgreen’s for D’s room. We are also going to do a tension rod with sheers for the one window in the room!
D is doing an turquoise bedspread and roomie is doing chocolate brown.

Our temperature broke last night, so humans v zombies has started.

rushedmom, I like the color combo!I have read such mixed reviews for rhl but may still get a few things from them. I really like the trucnks, but haven’t even priced any trucks to know if it was a deal.

Are shower shoes just flip flops? D1 had apartment style living and my S had a community bath but never mentioned shower shoes.

Flip flops, that’s what I’m getting for D. They’re inexpensive and should also be on sale around here soon since it’s a summer item.

D will have to ask her roommate what items, if any, she will be bringing. She and her father will be there a week before move in and so will we. So, I suppose there will be plenty of time to shop. Roomie is from Sweden and is D’s FB friend.

I am in SoCal (on the coast) and we received AP scores several days ago.

I believe California got them before everyone else last year too. But I would bet the the heat/lack of electric has also slowed the delivery to the east coast this year.
