Welcome, Feb158. Buckle up and enjoy the ride!

I haven’t posted in awhile. My DS is a '12er. My DD just graduated from Boston U. Still looking for a job in a lab. She really doesn’t want to come home :(.

DS '12 has switched from IB to AP next year and is much happier. I can’t believe I’m doing this all over again!

S graduated UF in 1996 and I don’t remember it being as competitive and stressful as it has become now. I know, big spread in ages! Appreciate all the recent experience you share on this forum. Thanks!

Hello, everyone! I’m finally ready to join the “Parents of H.S. class 2012”. My oldest DS will be a 2012 graduate and then his brother will be graduating in 2014. Expecting to learn a lot. Enjoying the ride so far.

Welcome, Feb158 and Student4ever!!!

s4e, I am 2 yrs up the road from you (D’10 and S’12). Nice to have you both along for the journey! (Yep, I can’t believe I’m doing this again).

Pebbles: Congrats on your D’s graduation from BU!

Anyone else’s child experiencing a slip in grades for the 4th quarter? I think the end of school is looming and my DS is just about DONE mentally.

We’re done! Last day was Tuesday.

It seemed like even the teachers lost their motivation after AP exams.

Just found this website and appears to be EXACTLY what I need. Eldest S is 2012; another S is 2014. Scary disclosure here… I’m class of 1974. OMG how things have changed.

4th quarter midterms were a disaster, S focused entirely on Science Olympiad (any other SO parents here?) so final exams loom ominously.

Anyway… hello from Ohio; looking forward to the conversations.

Grades aren’t slipping this quarter, but S is demanding at least a week this summer playing video games. We only have a one week honors science program and driver’s ed scheduled for this vacation. I wanted him to do something worthwhile, but he is refusing so far. We are visiting some campuses this summer, but I am taking some friends so that we can get the group interested in college. We moved from Berkeley to a steel town in Indiana, where most of the kids don’t reach beyond a few schools and many just end up at commuting to a satellite campus because they can’t afford Purdue or IU. I am taking them to various private schools this summer so that they can see that more is possible.

DD is tired. Way too much testing recently, it’s hard to get back into the “normal” routine after two weeks of messed up schedules for state testing. She is definately not giving things her usual effort. So far it’s been a few points here and there, but we will find some time this weekend to talk about finishing strong.

My DD is way over tired too. Final exams last week, apush test right before that, and now she is taking 2 classes at the local cc to make time for ap bio. Apparently it takes up 2 periods because of a lab. She’ll only have 3 weeks of no school plus summer reading and reports for ap psych and ap lang. Whatever happened to summer “break”?

I think that is the problem. My DS had the AP World History and will take the SATII WH on June 4th and then he starts two weeks of finals and regents on June 14th. It’s like he’s just ready to be done and he has a 3 1/2 weeks of exams left to finish. I think it’s just too late in the year for this.

My son definitely has sophomoritis/spring fever. He has 3 actual days left of school, then final exams and despite having a few pivotal tests…is already on the xbox! He is taking the SAT 2 in Math 2 on June 5th and is doing some (but not enough) prep work for that. I have said to him; “Bases are loaded, you are in the bottom of the ninth, BRING YOUR MEN HOME”. He does have a history of giving up the ship too soon. Sigh. Love the kid on the couch.

My D’12 is living a whirlwind right now. Final exams at school, state championship track meet tomorrow, and SAT subject test (US history) on June 5. In the middle of all that are her brother’s HS graduation activities next week and commencement (after SAT on June 5). Calgon, take us away! ;)

DB, good luck to your D in track. It’s so challenging to be juggling your S’s upcoming grad and her activities, isn’t it? I’m going through the same.

D’12’s grades haven’t suffered but she is really done with this term. She’s resisting taking more than one class this summer but I think she should to lighten the load. Her HS doesn’t offer APs until jr yr so she’s looking at an extremely crazy yr with a boatload of testing in the spring. I’m mad at myself for not considering this when “shopping” around for a HS for her.

Bucking the trend here. Just met with Ds12’s GC yesterday and reduced his schedule DOWN from AP American Humanities to 11th grade Regents History. His original schedule was:
AP American
AP English
AP Pysics + Physics Lab
Pre-Calc
Spanish 4 Honors
IB Modern Art (SL)
TOK (Theory of Knowledge)
Phys. Ed

The problem with this schedule is that it didn’t work with having LUNCH so options were eating durng a class or during his free ninth period (when there is no scheduled lunch) so something had to give.
He is a science/math oriented kid with mild ADD issues that impact his organization.

Plan for next year is
some version of Social Studies to cover Pol & Econ requirement
AP English Lit
AP calc
AP Science (either BIO, Chem or Physics C)
AP Spanish
Health
PE

Seems like he should have plenty of APS. He is not a good fit for a stressful IVY (though he dreams of MIT)), but rather a small place good for sciences.

Thoughts?

S is definitely ready to be done!

He had his last big exam today and I’m not sure what they will do for the next 6 days in his classes. His club soccer season is ramping up and he is tired! I’m glad there is the long weekend to catch up on some of his rest.

He seems to have survived 2 APs and one college-level class, so I’m hoping that 3 APs + his college-level math won’t be too much for him next year. He was pretty harried during the last few weeks before exams.

We’re looking at a long summer ahead for him without many things scheduled for him. I’m pushing him to get his classroom driver’s ed done early in the summer, so he can get some behind the wheel practice done before the craziness of the school year starts up again. We need to find something other than computer and video games to occupy his time. Unfortunately the online classes I’d hoped he could take were filled up by older students.

Hope you all have a great Memorial Day weekend!

DD is almost done. One (relatively easy) final and one presentation on Tuesday. Then ARML Thursday through Saturday. Then sophomore year is really over!

Your son sounds a bit like mine. We can work on the lists together this coming year. My son is taking a similar schedule to your son next year (but a bit worse/harder since my son has 5 AP and 2 honors…he did PE/health in 9th grade).

This is going to be a killer weekend for D2, there is no F in Fun this weekend. She is studying for her finals, finishing up final projects, studying for 2 subject tests, and ballet rehearsals. She has few borderline grades, so she’ll need to finish up well to push her over.

On top of that, our house is just chaotic because we are in the midst of packing to move. D2 is excused from helping because of her schedule. She has lived here since 3. I think it is just as well that she is busy with other stuff. She won’t have as much time to get too sentimental. We are under contract for the house, so she won’t be coming back to this house again.
