Parents of the HS Class of 2012 - Original

Congrats on selling the house, OldFort.

Sounds like a busy weekend for D2. Hope all goes well.

My D, a new driver, just slammed the car into the iron garden gate. Made a dent on the car and the impact bent the heavy iron gate. Would love to scream on top of my voice but… She is either overly cautious or totally oblivious to danger. I hate to look at the gate. I don’t the dent on the car as much.

New drivers make me very nervous. My son has had his license since the end of March but really only drives on the weekends. He just asked if he could drive himself, alone, to Borders this evening and I told him that I am still not ready for him to be on his own in the dark. It is a 25 minute drive from here and is on a busy (3 lane) intersection. I know that I have to let him go but, he just dosent drive enough in daylight for me to be comfortable with him out that far at night (and he is my third child/driver). He has so much teenage oblivion in his system right now…

I probably will drive following my D the first time she goes out alone with the car. Iglooo, I damaged my parents’ house when I was a new driver. I expected my father to blow up, but he was so nice. He said, I have homeowners insurance, and I will call them. It got fixed fairly quickly as I remember (35 years ago…). Now, on the other hand, my DH put a nice dent in the car’s bumper a while back, and I hate looking at that.

I remember when D1 drove on a highway, H was in front of her and I was back of her. It’s tough to be the first child.

Sorry to hear about the accident. D2 doesn’t have her license yet, she’s already been in 2 accidents with her dad sitting next. To her. I hope those count toward beginner’s accident.

Did you mean AP US History?

Thank you, good moms. I bit my tongue. I teased her once and we are all good now. She got over her embarrassment and I am no longer upset.

Am typing on my iPhone. Bit of hit or miss.

oldfort I remember you from another thread. congrats and good luck withthe move. My D2 is a 2012, she will take her first Ap’s next year. she is in all honors except math, (teacher issue). Hope you have a great end of the year.

So how is the move going Oldfort? How far is the move?

Mexico City, at least it’s not HKG.

D2 has taken Spanish since 5, now she will be fluent.

Don’t feel too bad for her. Due to security reason, D2 will have a driver/body guard wherever she goes, per my firm’s requirement.

We are doing this to give D2 geographic advantage when it comes to college application. (you all know I am kidding, right?)

Her new school offers IB, which she has been accepted. But they are not as good with college counseling. Since my firm is paying for her high school, we decided to get her a private counselor with the money we are saving.

We had a melt down yesterday over amount of work. She was struggling with pre-calc final. D1 said, “Ahh, I am a math major and I tutor people. I think I could help.” I saw two of them huddling last night. Today, she is singing while she is studying, so I think we are seeing light at the end of tunnel.

Even we are moving out of country, I will stay on this thread until D2 graduates.

Congratulations, Oldfort! I envy you and your family. You may be interested in Maya Frost’s website [Maya Frost - The New Global Student - Education Design - Creativity - Mindfulness](http://www.mayafrost.com/) or her book, The New Global Student. She is a little over the top. I met her at a Rotary conference last summer. However, she does bring up some interesting ideas. Living in Mexico will be a great opportunity for your family.

Thanks. It looks interesting, I will check it out.

Any kid taking SAT IIs this Sat? I was reading the score choice on Collegeboard. If D2 does badly on one subject and well on another, we couldn’t choose not to report the bad one, right?

Can someone explain how score choice works?

Hi! I have a 2012 son. This is the first time I’ve posted on this thread.

We didn’t use score choice for subject tests with my older son, but I’m pretty sure you can choose to send only one score. You wait until scores come in and then decide if you want to send them. You do end up spending more money with score choice, because the free sends are no longer available.

I’d suggest she take only one on Saturday. Pick an easy test next year.

Oldfort, I think a major congrats on the sale of your house is in order (and your promotion). Houses in my town are so though to sell right now.

On the score choice, I think Cornell, and a number of other schools want all the scores, but some of the top schools allow score choice (MIT?). If they ask for all, even though they have no way of knowing if you sent all, you probably breach some attestation on the application if you don’t send all. As to retaking a score that is less than satisfactory, I understand from my teacher acquaintances that many students retake the tests, and even the schools that want to see all the scores allegedly use the best. (The lawyer in me has to say allegedly, because I think alot of what is publicly stated are half truths. I am truly suspicious of need blind admissions where the applicant checks a box on the application that he or she is applying for aid. Call me paranoid… )

seiclan, Did your son go to the bookstore last night? My daughter’s next ambition is going on a turnpike, speed limit 65 mi/h. Not looking forward to it. anothermom, I guess I should get it fixed soon?

Funny thing is we had a nicest chat ever last night. After she was done studying for the SAT, she came down to hang out with us. Usually, she goes on line when she’s done with studying. Oldfort, My D just have the permit, not licenced yet. Did I mention she also totaled our lawn mawer? That was a few years back.

I know you are joking but we had 2 kids graduate from International schools overseas and found that colleges vary in how they consider US citizens living abroad - some public schools just count them in the OOS pool, some put them in the international pool. It goes both ways - my oldest is at an Ivy (international pool) and my middle was waitlisted at our alma mater state school (OOS) which should have been a slam dunk for him. Our high school had great counseling and a good reputation but the relationship with each university was different - some schools loved us and others just didnt really know us. Naviance was very helpful if the new school has it!
My youngest still wants to go back to China after a year back here- she’s settled very well but China is such a part of who she is that she really misses it. All three kids ended up loving the experience (we also spent 4 years in England/Germany when they were younger).

That was another plus with overseas moving - no driving! My 20 year old just got her licence in January and the 18 year old got his permit just last week - he’s competing with the 15 year old for driving practice.

Hi everyone. I have been “wandering” around CC and am glad to find this thread. My S is in a charter school with an an all honors curriculum. There are no AP’s and the only elective is Language. His junior year, he will be taking:

Honors Humane Letters 3: Literature, philosophy, and history of Ancient Greece with readings from Homer, Sophocles, Epictetus, Thucydides, Plato, and Aristotle. Two hour block counts as credits in History and English.

Honors Calculus AB
Honors Physics II
Honors Spanish III
Honors Drama/Applied Art (semester courses)

His passion is Speech and Debate. Captain next year. Will be representing AZ in the Nationals later this month. Debate camp for two weeks in July.

For the past two years, we have gone to Spanish language school in Guatemala (his birth country)and done some volunteer work there, but this summer the preparation for and attendance at the Nationals are taking a lot of time and energy. He needs some down time.

GPA is ascending–hope to get up to 3.75 UW by senior year. On track for NHMF–will find out come October!

Look forward to learning from you guys over the next couple of years!
