Parents of the HS Class of 2012 - Original

ShanghauMom, what wonderful experiences for your kids! I lived overseas as my dad was in the military and I never forgot it.
My D2 is taking two sats saturday. then Taylor Swift!!!
My D2 is also on the verge of getting her liscence.(sp) A little to close to the right, and we have to take her on the highway more, safe passing. etc… I am more anxious about her than my first one. However since my D1 has been driving with me, she has developed a lead foot and it makes me nervous. What really makes me nervous is the two of them in the car at the same time.

sorry i spelled your name wrong!

One of the plusses about being back in the US is that my d got to go to see Taylor Swift - she said it was “the best concert ever” But then what does she know!

OK, need some guidance. S has the following schedule planned for next year:
AP US History
Honors Physics
AP Chemistry
Trigonometry (1 semester)
Psychology 1 (1 semester)
Honors English 11
Medical Intervention (BioMed honors PTLW course)
Spanish 2
Junior Gifted/Talented class (GT)

Problem is this: S wants a student internship this year with his chemistry professor but doesn’t want to pass up the relatively easy A the GT class offers. On one hand, he becomes the intern of the teacher who will write the review for college apps (and is alumni at his first choice college). One the other hand, how can I recommend that he not take an academic class? Trying to let him make his own decision, but he has allowed me to ask “the CC parents” what they would do.

As background, S wants to be a pharmacist or optometrist, has 4.5 GPA and has extensive ECs in theater, student governemt, community service and track.

Is the student internship graded or not? What would he do in the student internship? Is this basically serving as teacher’s aid? Or is it a situation where he would work on projects with the chemistry professor?

Do the internship. It will be great for his resume, and his essay. He doesn’t need an easy A, he already has great GPA. Even if he is not doing much for the teacher, he could still dress it up and package it. A great rec is priceless.

D1 already has an office job in college. Her finance professor asked her to be a TA for him next year. She was unsure at first, but I told her it would look great on resume. Same amount of money, but differnt appearance.

Mizzbee, my D2 is a rising college Junior and will be applying to pharmacy schools (after she gets her bachelors). Applicants need to have all sorts of internships and experiences under their belt. I would go for the chemistry internship with the professor (whether or not it is graded). It will be a great experience, establish or deepen your child’s relationship with this teacher (thus enabling him/her to write an insightful recommendation) and it will look very good his applications. A nondescript GT class, IMHO, dosen’t impress anyone.

I agree - the internship sounds like a great opportunity. I get the feeling that most of the colleges are really selling the idea of doing research with a professor - they want kids who will take hold of these types of opportunities and what a better way to show that initiative than having already done that in high school! And the alumni status of the teacher is an added bonus!

just wanted to say hi, I’ve been off cc for a while but plan to be back more regularly in the fall. The year is ending well for D and she’ll be taking one SAT II on Sat. We hope to do some general college visits of nearby representative schools (small/big, urban/rural, etc) this summer.

D2 is finishing up her sophomore year and has a busy summer planned.

Her first priority is riding and showing her horse which becomes much less stressful once school has ended. She has a paying job for three weeks as an aid at a writing camp and also is working on an internship for two weeks with a friend that runs an online magazine. D has her own pet sitting business in our neighborhood and normally has many summer jobs that keep her busy. She will also be doing drivers ed training. Finally she will be doing SAT prep and taking the test along with the PSAT in the fall.

Thanks everyone. I will let him know how you all felt. I agree with all of you. I love how you are all so supportive.

Welcome back JAVACC…rhymes… I like it.

My son is taking the SAT 2 tomorrow also. He is doing the Math. Wish he could just show up later and not at 7:45 AM…he is not a morning person. He met with a tutor today (he did a couple of sessions to brush up on Algebra and Geometry since he hadn’t taken them since middle school. Tutor says he is ready. Told son to get a good nights sleep, eat breakfast, bring a sweatshirt, water, eraser, extra pencils, calculator and batteries. Famous last words, I have a rebelous 16 year old who will probably stay up too late, forget his sweatshirt/batteries/extra pencils, tell me he isn’t hungry for breakfast and eat a pop tart en route to the exam. Gotta love the kid on the couch. Somehow though, he always does seem to pull it off.

Tomorrow is Chem and Literature for D2. After SAT IIs then it’s ballet rehersal. Sunday is the big day for performance. She has 3 solos. She has her finals next week.

She is doing a program at Amherst U this summer for 3 weeks. At the program she could take a photography course, which she is very excited about. We got her a real digital camera. Something for her to look forward to. Sophomore Wasserstein difficult. But we know next year is going to ne worse.

What a nice feeling to have. It’s much better than “I know this kid can easily score an 800, only if …”

Good luck to all the '12 kids on tomorrow’s SAT IIs.

My D has Chem and World History tomorrow. She is the only one of her friends attempting the World History even though everyone took AP. But everyone in her AP Chem is “required” to take the Chem, so she has lots of company. After that, she is going to a street faire to celebrate a good friend who got good news about recovery from a scary illness. So, for all of you who have kids taking the October SAT, its time to sign up and get the best locations… the school near you. I already signed up my D because she is taking a prep course this summer.

My H just took S, who is NOT a morning person either, to the HS for the SAT sub. test(world history)…hope they make it in time. Everything is always a last minute rush with this kid.

Chrissyblu, Thank you for the tip to sign up. For today’s SAT, I didn’t sign up early. By the time, I got around all the seats were taken at nearby schools. My D had to go some distance to a school she was not familiar with, adding to her anxiety. Hope she is doing well.

Just got home with '12 DS from SAT2. He took the math 2. We got to the testing center (not his high school at about 7:47 am) and the line to go in was around the corner! He did not get released until about 10:15. He said that the test was easy but that he left 3 blank. Okay, that was the first official test. Most of his friends were taking the World test but DS didn’t see the point (since he was a B student all year in AP World and does not plan on majoring in history…he wants math or science). Guess the results of this test will be out in 3 weeks???

Thanks for the heads up about October SAT sign ups. I will have him do that later today. He will also take the October ACT two weeks later. He is going to study for both this summer and we will see which one turns out to be a better test for him.
Oldfort, that Amhert programs sounds amazing. She will love it on so many levels. I could not convince my son to do a program this summer (and trust me, I got all the brochures). SAT/ACT prep, and his summer AP work (will be significant since he is taking 5 APs this fall) will keep him busy enough.

For those of you who mentioned SAT signup for October - is it common for Juniors to take SAT in the fall before PSAT? I thought my son wouldn’t take SAT for the first time until after the PSAT, possibly in the spring. Would it be better for him to take it earlier?
