I was hoping D was going to take the SAT in June but she had a tournament that weekend. Tough decision but this summer is important for her sport. So, she took the ACT and we’re waiting for the scores. It seems as though she’s behind in testing though, when I read the posts here. There will be lots of catching up this fall!

lilmom, I’m with you. My son hasn’t taken any tests yet. I think we still have time.

Please, relax!!! It’s way early to be taking tests! I’m on second child and am far ahead of where I was with first and still haven’t done nearly as much as all of you. My first child did just fine, Yale (Early Action) and Dartmouth were just a few of her acceptances and we didn’t even think of college until Labor Day before Junior year when we were in the neighborhood so looked at Cornell. I think her first SAT was in March of Junior year with the second being in June and SAT II in May of Junior year. Taking the tests early is only a good idea if your child is ready, if not, you’ve still got plenty of time.

Just being on CC puts you way ahead of most!

I agree there is plenty of time. However, I want to avoid extra tests in May/June with APs and finals, I don’t want her to have other tests then if possible. She will be looking to retake some subj tests in the fall/winter and SAT and/or ACT in winter/early spring. I don’t want to have to cram more into the end of the year or rely upon the fall. Since she will probably be applying to some engr schools, the math and science tests come into play unless she goes with the act. Just our perspective.

amtc, I agree with you - in general - too. However, since D just took the APUSH course and the AP exam, it seemed logical to us that she would also take the USH SAT Subject test.

I’m on my second kid, too. And, we are totally relaxed.

What is a good math2 SAT subject test? My D is away and we have no idea what she got.

Try this link to the college board for subject test percentiles.

Thank you for the link. You get 800 and it’s 89%!

We visited Yale, Wesleyan and Brown this week. My D loved Yale. We kept making “hogwarts” jokes. Seriously. Go there. You will understand, from the sorting students into residential colleges, to the basic feel. Wesleyan was nice, but really remote. My D is at Brown now for two weeks. They told us at the orientation that they will give her an evaluation in a few weeks after her two week class is done. If the eval is good, students send the eval in as part of their application package. We found that interesting. Everyone on these pages say that Summer @ Brown is a waste. Maybe not… She likes her class. It is very interesting and she likes the professor. It is run very much like my older D’s classes at UCLA. My younger D has to lead a class discussion, has 80 pages of reading tonight and has to write a paper for next week.

Summer! Finally. All grades are posted and we are very pleased. We plan to start studying for SAT’s hoping that it will boost PSAT scores. Still unsure when we will do all of the testing required this year.

Florida State, Delaware, Michigan are the only schools right now that have made the final list to apply
of course that might change. So if I understand correctly, we apply to Florida State at the end of Junior year, prior to the start of summer?

Math2 is only taken by strong math students. I think anything over 700 is good enough for Ivy caliber schools, anything over 750 is fine for the top engineering schools, and anything over 650 is good enough for the top 50-ish schools. Lower scores are probably fine, but those are the scores where I definitely wouldn’t consider a retake.

chrissyblu - my daughter LOVED Yale, it broke her heart to turn it down, but they have no MT major, they said she could put one together but she wanted a structured MT program. Brown is an amazing school for the right kid. We have a friend who is doing amazing things there, taking every opportunity they offer and creating many of his own. That’s what Brown is great for - a creative, energetic, focused kid who doesn’t quite “fit the mold” of typical college. I kind of think of it as the Ivy version of Hamshire only a little less out there!

mathmom, Thank you. That’s the answer I was looking for. I didn’t know what to think of 89% at 800.

US students are really good at math. That Ranks table (#827) shows that 156K students took math2 in 2009 and 56K (36%) scored 700 or above.

cherryhillmom2- Yes, you apply to Florida schools the summer between Junior and Senior year. Florida State applications are available starting August 1 and the University of Central Florida applications are available by July 1. I would recommend your daughter look at UCF in Orlando. There is a large New Jersey contingent there since it is an easy flight (to Orlando) and has a lot to offer. My D2 is a rising Junior at UCF and loves it. Best of all, it is rolling admissions so if your D applies in July or early August, she will get her decision by mid September! It was wonderful having an acceptance in hand at the very beginning of senior year!

amtc: Yes… I agree. She is enjoying the Brown experience right now. She said she is pretty much the only incoming Junior. Everyone else is an incoming senior, which she was surprised by. Next year, though, she was hoping to do Innerspark (its a program in California offered at CalArts, and she wants to do the writing program.) Not too many Californians. One from S.F. She is really liking meeting all the international students, though. That is a great benefit of the program.

We’re at Yale tomorrow, and from our hotel room, we’re seeing lots of Hogwartian architecture. So far we’ve been to 5 of 7 planned visits (Harvard, MIT, Wellesley, Amherst, Williams, with Yale and Brown to come) and dd has schools she loves and could see herself at, a school she hates, a school she doesn’t hate, but won’t apply to, and a school she likes but will turn down for a school she loves. But I think she’s definitely stuck on the Northeast.

For the families that have visited Yale, is it reasonable to find parking near the admissions office, or should we leave our car parked at our hotel?

D is enjoying her summer so far. She is riding her horse 5 times a week plus riding and jumping additional horses for her trainer when others are out of town. She starts her SAT prep class in a week and a half then her summer job at the writing camp for two weeks at the end of July. In between she has some horseshows she is doing to try and get points to qualify for the big final shows at the end of summer.

showmom, good luck to your D in her shows! It’s amazing to see young kids so passionate about something! S was like that with music in HS and now D is like that with her sport. How does your D feel about the SAT prep? Mine is not very enthusiastic about it and I’m afraid I’ll have to be insistent. She has so much summer work assigned by the AP teachers on top of her tournaments. The short trip we have planned for her 16th bday will be much needed in July.

It sounds like everyone is having a good summer. D2 is at her summer program now. She is having a great time.
