That’s great Oldfort. I am now wishing that I sent DS to a summer program. He and I are having a difference of opinions right now (about the SAT prep work). :(

Do your kids call home every day from their summer program?

Two times a day.
Yesterday was about extra money. As we are out of the country, I asked her older sister to take care of it.

D2 called this morning to say that they are visiting Yale this afternoon. At this program, they schedule college visits that are close by. It´s one of the reasons we chose the program because it would be harder for us to take her to visit those schools next year.

Greetings! Haven’t checked this thread in a while and can’t believe we are in July already. D1 is off on a church mission trip this week with S2 ('13er). Their trip overlapped by two days with another summer activity they registered for, so they will have some catch up to do when they get back.

Still waiting for D1’s two AP scores. Her two SAT II test results came back. Both cleared the 700 hurdle, but barely. She asked PCM and me if she should take them again…food for thought this summer.

PaperChaserPop –

The scores-by-phone came out today, so if you’re willing to pay $8 (total, not per exam) to hear her scores, you can call and get them.

Mine will be out of town by the time they come in the mail, so it was worth it for her to pay the money.

^Since D1 is away this week, willing to pay or not, we’ll just have to wait. Seriously, I think we can teach our kids the virtue of patience by not giving in to the impulse of picking up that phone with the credit card in hand ;). It is tempting…

lilmom - D was the one who asked that we sign her up for SAT prep this summer. She knows that once school starts her time will be very limited and she wanted to work on this during the summer. D is a very bright kid with a 4.0 (unweighted) GPA after her sophomore year, but she does not test well on standardized tests like the SATs. We chose a prep class that helps the kids a lot with the strategies of taking the acutal test as we think this will benefit her the most.

2012D just hit AP Scholar with Distinction with 1 5, 3 4s and a 3. She and I were both amazed that she scored a 4 in art history while on exchange in S. America this year. She wasn’t sure she could write coherently in English after 9 months immersion in Spanish. I wasn’t sure she had really studied the material. She’s hoping to make AP National Scholar by the end of next year. She needs 4 more scores of 4 or better. She’ll be taking Spanish, biology, English lit and macro economics next year. She may self study environmental science. Senior year she’ll have calculus, physics B or C depending on her calculus placement, U.S. history, and English language.

Wow, Apollo! That’s great! Congrats to your D! :)

Must be rare for a '12 in your state, only a few if not less I imagine. Congratulations to her!

Way to go Apollo’s D’12!

Oldfort - Twice a day! I consider myself lucky if I hear from my D once a day. Keep telling myself I’d hear from her if she’s in trouble.

Apollo - Congratulations on the achievement!

congrats Apollo!

My D2 hasn’t been away at places where she has had much opportunity to call. She has been at camp programs for several weeks (but only up to two weeks at a time), plus has done GS trips to England and hiking the Grand Canyon. None of these allowed cell phone use without restrictions.

D1 did a 5 week summer program after her freshman year in HS before she had a cell phone. She had a calling card but she primarily emailed. We heard from her a couple times a week with updates. This is probably how we’ll hear from her next year in college, a phone call every so often (hope once a week) and texts and emails.

How are you 12er parents doing with Toy Story 3? Over in the 10/14 group we are all losing it with Andy going off to college. Wondering if 12 parents are sufficiently removed from that milestone that it might not affect you as strongly?

Re Toy Story 3, 12ers not sufficiently removed. The movie is killing us. Kids all think we are crazy. There is an upside, however. We have officially restarted the negotiations re giving away some beanie babies and barbies to "some younger kids who would really get a lot of joy out of them just as in Toy Story 3! (Nothing has actually been given away yet, however.)

Congrats to your daughter, Apollo6!

In 2009, only 9 states had more than a dozen 10th graders who earned AP Scholar with Distinction.

Congrats, Apollo!
General rule of thumb when D is away is that I hear from her once a day. Sometimes it’s less than that (generally Girl Scout trips), once in a while it’s more often.
Tried the give away some of the stuffies, didn’t get anywhere. I did get most of them removed to “Camp Storage” a while ago…I’m hoping she sorta forgets about them Every once in a while she asks me if the are still safe in storage, so I haven’t donated them yet.

Safe in storage! It is never safe in my storage. Last year, we redid my D’s room while she was away. She was OK with throwing out/giving away her old stuff when putting the room back together. They didn’t look right in the brand new room.

Yale people: We parked on Grove street (?) around the corner from the Omni when we were at Yale. The problem with Yale parking on the street for admissions is that I think it is 3 hours, except on weekends. We were there on a week day, so I was worried about feeding the meter. Its an easy walk, so just park in one of the lots. You will be fine to walk to the street admissions is on.

Summer program phone calls: She finds she has so much to talk about that she calls every day. She is very happy at Brown. I would recommend the program. She told me she thinks she is going to have a hard time back at h.s. At Brown, the professors “treat you like a person” and “engage you.” H.S., sadly, is not like that, with 50 kids in a class, given budget cuts, etc.

Congrats on the AP Distinction people. My UCLA girl was one of those with numerous AP 4’s… I think she ended up with 5 4’s.
My 2012 girl got her first 5 today… W.H. She is very excited. (The one at Summer at Brown.)

What I found from mathinokc’s link (#855) shocks me and humbles me - at least 20 10th grade kids in the country got 4 or 5 on 8 APs or more in '09! Two thoughts came to me:

Focus on the uniqueness of our own kids, and now it’s a good time to assess that while they are away at summer programs.

Someone said that no matter how good you are at something, you’ll find someone does it better than you when you attend a good university. However, a kid still can be the best with a set of things that she/he is good at, which again stresses the uniqueness.

We were born unique and we strive to remain so. That’s one of the American values that inspires people around the globe.

It has been a few years since I had a kid waiting for AP scores. Does anyone remember when we usually get them in the mail? I vaguely remember thinking after July 21? Just deciding if we will call for them or wait it out. So curious yet, for a rising junior the difference of two weeks dosen’t change anything. I am such a CC mom though…
