Parents of the HS Class of 2012 - Original

Good morning all! We’re heading over to DC for the rally tomorrow - glad to see some of my 2012 virtual friends will be there! We are leaving after school and driving the 10 hours out - we’ll stay with relatives in VA and head into town on the metro tomorrow.

Congrats on the good SAT scores - my S is taking the November test (which is only a week away!). I asked him if he wanted to study or practice. He said “no…well, maybe just set the book of practice tests out somewhere - I might look at it.” I had to tell him it’s been in his room on his bookshelf for weeks. I’m sure just having it in the room will do the trick - LOL.

I think this is a “know your child” situation. For us, those scores would be one and done! My DS will score higher on the CR and writing portions than on math. I think anything over 2050 and we are good to go! Anything between 1950 and 2050, we will talk about and he can decide if he wants to take them again. Lower than 1950, he’ll take them again.

DS won’t take the tests until March. Re take in June. I hope that will be all. APs in May. SAT II Bio in May. If he has to, maybe SAT Math in Oct of his senior year. I think he will be able to get into some very strong matches. The reaches are up to him. Not too worried. I’m fine with several of our state school options and he is definitely in range for them.

PinotNoir - We are driving down after school too. Staying in MD and will take the metro in as well! We made our signs last night. I just hope we are allowed to take them on the Metro as they are stapled to wooden posts. Waving to you from across the Mall!

Pinotnoir - What kind of rally? Is this some political thing?
Good luck to your son on the Nov. SAT. I am pretty sure that my son will study the same way for his January one.

Iglooo – Like geogirl1 said, you’d have to know my daughter. We will be delighted if she is able to score a 650+ on all three sections, although I would be happy to see a 600 on the math section. A 1530/1600? We’d take it in an instant and would never look back.

Geogirl- Sounds like you have a solid testing plan. My son will take the SAT 2 in chemistry in May alongside of the AP exam. I am hoping that the studying will compliment each other. He took the Math 2 last year after precalculus. He is only taking these exams for the out of state schools that are on his list, otherwise, the two instate schools that are possible (one private, one flagship public) do not require SAT 2s and like you, I would be more than fine with him choosing one of those two schools to attend.

FWIW, D’s scores from the Oct. SAT weren’t available yesterday. I think that’s because of the standby testing. I even called just to make sure that they weren’t holding them for some reason or another. Apparently they upload scores overnight on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

So we’re still waiting.

“But isn’t a 1530 good enough for HYPS???”

Depends on a lot of things. From a personal perspective – child is a white, unhooked female from an average small Upstate NY public high school that hasn’t sent anyone to an Ivy aside from Cornell in a decade – no.

IJustDrive - That can be so frustrating! One week to go then. Good luck!

Seiclan - We are doing the AP BIO/SAT II combo. He already took the SATII World History. I’m hoping that will be enough. Good luck on the Chem tests! BTW, the rally in the Jon Stewart/Stephen Colbert double header: Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear.

I agree with this.

D and I high-fived when we saw her scores. They were right where we estimated/hoped for the first time. She landed in the 2nd quartile for her matches and 3rd quartile for her reaches. She was pumped and almost eager to get to the retake to see her scores climb. It was good to watch. :)

Hang in there, IJustDrive. Sounds like you’ll be waking up to election results and SAT results on the same day.

My DS will be taking the SAT for the first time Nov 6th… well if you don’t count 7th and 8th grade for talent search. He has high CR and writing but struggles with the math. I think a bit unusual for a boy. I am crossing my fingers, even though I know he can retake, I think he would LOVE to be “one and done”. If he doesn’t get the math up I’m going to try to convince him to take the ACT since the math portion is smaller. I have a feeling I may have the same problem as seiclan’s S though, in that he won’t be that into it and therefore won’t study for it. He has had some one on one tutoring in the math section for the last few months… the last session this Monday, so we will see. I’ll let you know what happens. I have heard the math is easier to prep for. He has just never been a math kid… only in alg.II now. He wants to major in Philosophy/ Religion, so a definite Humanities kid.

Sounds like my son. 750R & 590M. The math only increased 20 pts on the retake. Lopsided scores must be more common than we realize. And when they’re backed up by an otherwise solid app, I don’t think they’re a disqualifier. (Below the tippy top schools, I mean.)

5boys - my S is taking it Nov 6th and I’m hoping for a one time score too! I like him to have his Saturday mornings. He’ll still take subject tests sometime May 7, and he’s taking subject tests that match his AP subjects, so Physics, Math, and Lit.

One thought for your son - I think the SAT tests math up through Algebra 2, so maybe if he retests at the end of the year (if he doesn’t like his math score), it will get him a better math score?

I’m trying to decide if S should take the ACT as well. Does anyone have any opinions about taking both, assuming we like his SAT scores fine?

I think you’re right, DB - especially if his intended major and interests match his strengths.

Pinot, I’m all for the ACT. My S’10 found it easier than the SAT. His scored reflected that, too.

So funny ^^^. That was my son’s SAT simulation results in reverse (he got 760 Math, 590 CR). I have been researching schools (on his tentative list) which have admitted students with similar lopsidedness and so far it looks like he has a shot at Carnegie Mellon and U of Miami. Still researching, just in case the reading score dosen’t come up significantly.

It depends. My impression was it’s better if all the scores are around 750 or higher although the official line is anything over 700 is one and the same. My D is just aiming 700ish.

Looks like I’ll be virtually meeting PinotNoir on the DC mall and Seiclan at U of Miami! UoM is on my son’s “maybe list”. It’s a good match school for him and offers the Marine Bio he’d like. It is big though. It’s also very similar to Boston University with very similar pros and cons. At this point my DS is far more interested in his ECs and school than is the college search. That’s ok, I can obsess enough for the both of us!

Everyone who is off to DC have a GREAT time. I know my S would kill to be there. Just too long of a trip from CA. He was talking of going up to LA tomorrow for some sort of a virtual program they have up there but I discouraged him because he just has too much to do this weekend.
PN… yes, I think he should retake at the end of this year if his math scores don’t rise. He will take the SAT II’s this Spring in US History and Lit… his strengths and also is AP’s in this year. On a better note, I just received his progress report yesterday and for the first time ever he got all A’s and 1 B+. I was literally in tears and was so proud of him. I’m glad he decided to finally step up the effort this year. It will a deal maker for him I think.

Awesome progress report, 5boys. :)

There are a lot of kids who have lopsided scores. It is not unusual at all. They all get into college.

Congrats 5boys - it is obvious your S has stepped up!
