Thanks Glido and DougBetsy… So many people told me that it just takes boys longer to ‘get it’ when it comes to school and that a lot of them don’t step it up till Junior year. I should have known better, especially as this is #4 in the pike. But… I still worried. This is a kid who has only had a few A’s in HS… no C’s though… mostly B’s and B+'s. He has the classic bright but academically lazy boy mentality of thinking, if I can get B+'s with minimum amount of effort why bother. That was until we made some college visits last Spring and he realized he would need to push a little harder to be competitive GPA wise. So… those A’s were definitely like candy to the eyes.

I have a feeling that for males a high critical reading and a lower math score might not be a bad thing considering how females applicants dominate in most humanities fields. (Of course I’m crossing my fingers that this is true because were looking for merit for S '11 who wants to go into computer science despite the fact that his English far outshines his math.) I’m also trying to tell myself that D’12’s 800CR + 650M + 710Wr is better than the same composite with more even individual scores. I was just hoping for 2100 but we were both really surprised that her math score was the same as when she took the SAT two years ago. Good luck, all! I know it will all turn out well in the long run.

Hi, all. Been a crazy few days. D actually has pneumonia, not mono. She is still out of school and the school is going to give her incompletes and allow her time to make up the rest of the quarter. She is on a 4x4, so they are just finishing up the equivalent of a semester.

But she got her SAT back and that was great. I think we are done. 770 CR, 750 W (11 essay) and 670 Math…2190. She was happy bout that.

Chrissyblu –

Congrats to your daughter on her SAT scores. Hope she feels better soon. I’m glad the school is working with y’all on her grades…

chrissyblu - Poo on the pneumonia. I hope she gets well quick. Yea! for the SAT scores. Those are great! :)

Wow, Chrissyblu, congrats to your daughter on her scores! So glad that she is on the mend.

I have been thinking about flu shots this year. Many of the local CVS and Walgreens are offering them on a walk in basis. Anyone have this year’s batch yet?

I got my flu shot about 10 days ago. Easy peasy.

chrissyblu - Congrats to you daughter. Great scores. Sorry she has pneumonia. I had it for the first time a couple of years ago. It is not pleasant. I was very sick and even after I started feeling better, it took a while for me to get back to normal.

I got my flu shot a couple of weeks ago. I’ll echo DougBetsy - “Easy Peasy.”

I lied about D2’s age in order for her to get a flu shot when we were back in NYC. You have to be 18+ to get it from a drug store. We didn’t have time to see a doctor and she is 2 months from being 18. I got one too. No problem.

congratulations chrissyblu’s D!!! That should alleviate some of the anxiety around the pneumonia and school. But none of the misery, it just sucks to be facing that jr year

Great Scores. Congrats! My D is taking the SAT in a week. If anyone else is taking it next Saturday, good luck to everyone.

My S is taking it next Sat. too. He should be home right now finishing his last few practice tests before he meets his tutor tomorrow… BUT, he spent the night at a friends last night after his last performance of the musical he was in. They had a cast party that went on into the wee hours of the night. I’m sure he will be up and ready for today’s studying…NOT.

D2 is also taking her SAT next weekend. She is freaking out, to put it mildly. She has been doing tutoring since Sep. She started to do full 3+ hours test at one setting this past week. Each time, her reading and math scores just got worse and worse with each section. Another word, if she got one wrong in section 1, she would end up with 3 wrongs in section 10. I think she just runs out of steam at the end.

D2’s writing score was the lowest when she first started tutoring. She said the grammar was nothing like what’s taught at school. Her tutor drilled her on what’s expected on the test. The good news is that she is getting close to 800 on writing. The bad news is that she is not showing much of improvement on CR and math.

I wasn’t that involved with D1’s testing 5 years ago…But now looking at it, I am not sure if SAT I is that good of measurement of a student’s ability. 3+ hours is a long time to do anything. Some people are better at focusing for 3+ hours at a time, and some people just fall apart, but it doesn’t mean they couldn’t solve those problems when they are not tired.

I am sure I am not saying anything new here. Just a little bit of rant here.

Remember everyone, if your student feels unprepared or not quite ready for the November SAT, you can always postpone it (for a $24 fee) to the January test! The January test, on the 22nd also has the Q and A service that you can pay for (they send your child the actual test booklet with their answers a few weeks after the scores come out so that they can see exactly what they got wrong and what was the correct answer). We are doing my son’s testing this way, with the plan for focused tutoring between the January and June SAT on his weak areas.

My D’s writing score was very low at the beginning of tutoring too. But after she worked at it, she raised it to the 750 and 11 essay on the actual exam. You can “teach the test” as they say. It made me also realize her school was missing the basics in grammar. She always had high RC scores. Her math raised a little, but not much. She never really got the math.

Great scores, chrissyblu! so great for both you and D that she is done!

my D is taking the SAT next Saturday too - having postponed it twice! she has been working with a tutor but still struggles with reading speed, so we will see.

D and I were at the Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear yesterday - it was a great day. huuuge crowd, but we were there early enough to claim a small spot of grass with a good view of a Jumbotron. I felt my age when the majority of the young crowd had no idea who Father Guido Sarducci was!

back to flu shots…we all walked into Walgreens and got ours. I think the 18 is, at least here, someone must be 18 with a minor. Here you only have to be 12 to get it at a walk in pharmacy.

instead of the SAT mine is having sinus surgery. She’s been sick all fall, on antibiotics and never gotten better. After the history of sinus infections for the last few years, we’re doing that this weekend. Opting for December ACT date.

fourkidsmom I hope your D has a swift, smooth recovery!
chrissyblu congrats on the SAT, and so sorry to hear about the pneumonia. Lots of rest, and keep an eye on her activities for a good couple of months (our D had it this summer).

I’ve got to get everyone in for the flu shots, thanks all for the reminders.

Congrats to Chrissyblu’s DD! Great scores!

fourkidsmom - hope she’s feeling better soon.

PRJ - we had great seats as well. Awesome signs, great people, wonderful show. The Metro ride back was a tiny bit crowded, but everyone was so reasonable that we didn’t mind being crushed together so much. It was a beautiful day spent with like-minded people. We even made it back for Sunday’s football game and halloween. Great weekend.

@Chrissyblu: Congrats on being done with testing! That must feel good. And I’m sorry about the pneumonia! At least you know it will clear relatively soon. But she must feel awful!
