Parents of the HS Class of 2013 - 3.0 to 3.3 GPA

Wow, it took me all night to read forward from where I last left off. I think I just read a great American novel! Or British, if post 1 had started with, “It was the best if times, it was the worst if times…” But really, mostly best of times, right?

I, too, am on an iPad and can’t for the life of me copy the acceptance thread to add DS successes to it. DS is a wonderful kid, talented athlete, with a 2.9 GPA and a 33 ACT (36 math, 35 science). I didn’t know how he’d fare or whether he’d get any merit aid, which we need (2 in college next year).

Results are in and he actually was accepted 12/12 schools, some with very significant merit aid, too. His top choices offer great aid and coaches/teammates he really likes, so we’re all in the same page there. We need to figure out where a kid like him (presumed late bloomer) will thrive academically. A couple more overnights in our very near-term future!

List of acceptances (I’ll have to wrestle the laptop away from the kids to properly add these to the list in the next couple of days):
Albion
Birmingham Southern
Cornell College
Earlham
Emory & Henry
Hope
Ohio Northern
Ripon
St. John’s Univ (MN)
St. Olaf
Univ Wisconsin-Platteville
Wabash

So happy the research, the visits and the fretting have paid off! Now he needs to truly listen to his instincts!

Coral, very sorry about Dodge, I know you both loved it. It has gotten so competitive, though. She is very talented, and will do wonderful things wherever she lands.

Wanted to thank all you 2013 parents. We will be going thru all this next year and reading your experiences is so helpful. My daughter really wants to go to our state U and while it seems like she has a good chance you never know. I’m really making her look at other schools where I think she could be happy if #1 doesn’t come thru. We live in MN and she wants to study Psycology, her stats 3.3UW (school deflates grades!), 28ACT. We are visiting Iowa State and Truman State, any other schools we should look at?

reeinaz, I see your son was accepted to Champlain! Congrats on all the acceptances!! We are planning a visit there in April. Does he plan to attend. Could you share your thoughts on it. May I ask if they are “generous” with any merit? Thanks for any input!!

Thank you for all the kind words everyone. And, yes, she could’ve prepared her application and essays better.

I’ve been staying offline for a little bit while we regroup. Unfortunately #2 was Univ of Denver where the money just did not work out (even though the NPC last fall made it look feasible). So, she has had both types of disappointment this last week.

Since last Fall she has become very focused on film and knows that is what she really wants to try to major in. Unfortunately, her remaining acceptances are not the strongest film programs except for San Diego State which she has decided is just ‘too close to home’.

We will regroup over the weekend, get out a poster board for pros and cons, and start re-visiting every school. She is starting to talk Gap Year, but unfortunately we don’t have a good plan for what that would mean for her since we are late to the game to come up with something meaningful for her to do. Her idea of Gap Year is Mom pays for an apartment in LA and she finds some kind of work in the industry. That’s not sounding really good to me right at the moment.

Coralbrook, Sorry to hear about the bad news. And if I remember correctly, she’s been giving you a bit of a hard time about the BF–hopefully he’s out of the picture soon. I can imagine that she feels its “all over” if she’s not accepted to a film program, outright. But working in the film business is not like being an engineer or an accountant, where you really MUST have the training. Many, many film industry executives (and I’ve known a few) did not come out of film-school (some did, sure). A good friend of mine is an award-winning editor who majored in English. I know an exec at a very famous production company who studied Classics. Starting off in a LAC, studying english/drama/history, whatever and see if she can’t do some extracurricular activities that will satisfy the film-making jones. It’s sometimes better to not be one of the herd at a famous film-program. S. CA can seem very one-note when it comes to that business.

Ideally get her out of the house for next fall. Remind her that the vast majority of students change their major at least once. And that just because she doesn’t have a film degree, it doesn’t mean she needs to stop rehearsing her Oscar acceptance speech.

coralbrook, the other thing to bring up gently perhaps is the “T” word: transferring. MANY kids do that after first year, if they can pull off a good GPA. Even transferring out of what would be the dream school for another kid.

It’s a real option to think about if she’s not yet in love with any schools on her list. But I’m guessing the re-visits might change that.

Also, I know there are other CC forums about going to college close to home, and still having a real away-at-college life. We live in the same city as our state flagship, 5 mins away. Many, many kids in town attend this school and are having just as legit college experiences as the kids across the country.

Thanks for updating us all.

The only thing about transferring is that transfers get treated differently than incoming freshmen for merit aid or need based aid. If you are offered merit aid as a freshman, but then transfer elsewhere, chances are you will not get same amount of merit at your second school.

Coralbrook, my son was very interested in film also. He still is, just no longer as a major. And yeah, you’d like a school with a strong program but she can do great things even without that. Even without a film major or minor, lots of schools have film clubs and aspiring filmmakers. You’d be surprised where the connections are made. Plus in a lesser known school, she might have more of an opportunity to be involved in filmmaking on all levels, from directing to post production, maybe even acting. Then there are the film festivals that she can enter on her own.

Adding my DD (24 ACT 3.3 in an IB program) will attend Guilford College with very good merit

Impressive list our DC did well!

I haven’t posted recently but I’m adding my D’s acceptances too (Monmouth, Susquehanna, Drew, Cornell College, SUNY Purchase, Rider, Hofstra, Arcadia, all with merit except Purchase). I think it’s really important for parents with students a year or so behind to see all the wonderful possibilities for their kids, and not get caught up in the “my kid won’t get in anywhere” mindset.

D just got acceptance to Sonoma State today, so pretty exciting!

A question for all of you: when you report that your child received significant merit aid, what does that mean? I’m asking because D applied and was accepted to a private and offered grants/scholarships totals about 24K. However total school cost is $55K. So, is that considered significant merit aid? To us, it’s not near enough to pay for the college, so it doesn’t seem significant. But I have nothing to compare it to, as all other colleges are publics.

crizello, “significant merit aid” means different things to different people. In our case, it meant that our S2 won’t have any loans. Merit aid brought the cost of a pricey private down to what we would pay at a Cal State, well within our budget. We’d told our son what we could afford when he was applying to schools, and made certain he understood that if one of the costlier schools accepted him, the deal would have to come with enough in merit aid to keep it affordable for Mom and Dad.

Congrats on Sonoma State! It’s actually very near where we live, and we know many students who go there and love it.

Our definition of “significant” merit aid is similar to LRP’s, namely that the merit aid awarded brings the net cost of attending the private school down to or below the cost of attending in-state flagship. Of course private school COA is all over the board–from low 30’s to well over 50k, so we normalise “significant” to the net cost we are left to pay instead of looking at the absolute award number.

Adding ours (Beloit, Lawrence (WI), Ohio Wesleyan)

Congrads. Daughter (high school class of 2014) loved Lawerence but too much $$$. Will visit Beloit this summer. Ohio is pretty far from here so really havn’t put any Ohio schools on the list but who knows?

For us significant Merit Aid means it brings the total cost of the school to a price we can afford based on amount we have saved for each kid. Obviously this number will be different for different families . Also for this DS it means it brings the total cost of the school to “close” to the total cost of the schools his older sister and brother attend(ed).

For those following the Denver saga-- DS looked last night and FA info was up. To be fair it was likely online earlier in the week but DS hadn’t looked since last Friday. The need based grant portion was very close to what we had originally predicted. The total aid was less than originally predicted because he received no merit $$ and originally we had thought he would receive something in merit aid. As others have mentioned Denver admissions said their applicant pool was better than expected this year and no one with below 3.75 would receive merit aid.

FA for next year would make it possible for us for that year. But since his older brother will be graduating in a year our need based aid will be dropping significantly, which would make the cost too high for the last 3 years. Unfortunate but that is how it is
