5boys, if you’re out there I just sent you a PM. I need advice on gap years.

We’re waiting for one of our final acceptances, which I already know is a rejection, based on all the portal link discussions going on. But, it’s OK because D knew it was a big reach.

Congrats on the American U and Wheaton acceptances! Condolences to the rest of our kids who will get rejections from their reach schools this week (including my kid, I think). I’m fairly certain my kid’s reaches wouldn’t be the best fit for him, afterall, but I would have loved for him to be able to turn them down, not the other way around!

Hope the news comes quickly for those awaiting those important FA packages.

Home stretch, everyone!

Congrats Kat and pkd! Great news! Hope everyone still waiting on decisions hears soon

DS waitlisted at his last school-- also his biggest reach school. He seems ok with it-- I am feeling a little bad because we never visited and it is known as a “need to show interest” school. But unfortunately he didn’t decide he was interested until November and then it seemed to late to visit. Oh well-- I have to remember he has lots of other really great choices, and really this last one likely wouldn’t have really been the best fit for him anyway

For those of you who have decided already I am envious! For those waiting for FA packages good luck with those-- hard to believe that in about a month it will all be over

Our big Reach, Northeastern, came back “Sorry, but no”. Not terribly surprised since her friend with better stats got rejected as well. I think she’s a bit disappointed because it’s her first rejection (god, who woulda thunk!) and she really liked Boston. She’s got a fantastic array of choices and will probably end up at Tulane–which I NEVER would have imagined as even a Reach.

stillnadine-SO happy that your child is going to Guilford. It was my top choice for my S, but he chose another school. Guilford was a very close second, though. I can’t wait to hear all about it in the fall.

I’m not adding my son’s acceptances to the wonderful list we have going because his schools are already represented, all except for McDaniel, I think. He only applied to five: Earlham (also a nice choice) Goucher (his choice) Guilford, and Ursinus. Every school offered merit and Ursinus’ was the most generous at $17K.

Congrats everyone!

D got expected denials from UGA and Tulane this weekend, and a hurtful and mildly surprising Dickinson denial also. She had friends over coincidentally, and one of them was recovering from denials at UGA, Vanderbilt, and Colgate. With so many higher stat kids in her school growing desperate and despondent right now as they are left with their “dreaded” safety as their only acceptance so far, D is reminded daily of her enviable position.

Not sure how to add her merit money, so for anyone curious she is a 3.1 (at application), 24 ACT (32 English), Engl/Comm major with 30 state university dual enrollment credits incl. all the core English classes (at the university campus), one year of leadership, a couple of clubs and one consistent volunteer position, and she was offered $24k at Susq, $14.5k at Guilford, and $25k at OWU. Nothing (yet?) from Elon.

My son told me he had a nightmare last night that he decided to go to his reachiest college (the only one he is still waiting to hear from)…and HATED it!
What did you hate about it? I asked.
Everybody there was so different from me! They were all tan and buff surfer dudes! he said.
The horror, the horror!

NPRMom, congratulations on your son’s choice! Goucher is one DS is considering, along with Wheaton (MA), Ursinus, Puget Sound, Denver, OWU and Hofstra. Waiting to hear if any merit $ from Wheaton, and all the rest have given merit except Denver. My personal favorites are Wheaton, Goucher, Ursinus and Puget Sound. I’ve got a spreadsheet going, and we are likely going to visit Goucher and Puget Sound in the next couple of weeks.

What helped your son decide on Goucher?

Back again after an hiatus. Cannot believe that it is almost at 168 pages. I am really really glad that people have found this page useful and this thread has been a community and support group for so many parents.

As far as my son (S2) is concerned for whom I started this thread, here is the update.

(For those who may not remember, he is a very bright kid who thinks school is a waste of time to go to school has ADHD and is very interested in music.) Well he applied to many schools including some suggested here on this thread.

He is waiting to hear from one big music program school but did not get into others USC, Miami etc (even if he had got into the music program) he would probably not have got into the general school due to GPA and SAT. He has got into the University of Puget Sound music school (which was school that was suggested on this thread) and Ohio State University.

OSU was classic case of student decision making. We kept getting mailers from them and there was some discussion between my son and his brother on why OSU was being kept of football bowl games. I causally suggested that he should apply there, as he thought OSU was being treated unfairly. He thought it over and decided that he should apply there, he did audition and he actually got in.

Both OSU and UPS have given some aid, but OSU will turn out to be cheaper, both are going to far (UPS may be nearer but at certain point I do not think it matters). He in inclined towards OSU and I would prefer a larger school especially if he decides he wants to major in something else or get a minor in area with better job prospects. Any opinions or suggestions?

All in all, we have a big sense of relief. At least he has got into a school he seems to like, the cost is manageable. There were times we had given up hope especially when all the reject letters started pouring in. I know I could have turned to other parents on this thread but I could not bring myself to post much.

For other parents, especially those who children will graduate next year, please realize that there is hope. Things will work out in the end. Another thread has been started for 2014 HS class and this thread will die down naturally in a few months time and other parents can use the new thread as a support group. This thread has a wonderful set of caring posters, who are always ready to help.

Hello everyone! I have been a lurker on this thread for a while now. I thought it may be helpful for rising juniors and sophomores to post my recent acceptance on here (I have a 3.27 UW GPA). I got into Amherst College with an early write!!!

Thanks for posting Mazewanderer and congradulations on your son’s two acceptances. The kids seem who go to OSU seem really happy there, I don’t know much about your son’s other school. I am a parent of a 2014 daughter and this thread has given me hope for her. We never planned on her going to an Ivy but its such a joy to know there are a ton of good schools out there for our kids. I hope you will come back in future years and let us know how your son does. Good luck.

Congrats KarateKid! Also glad to hear of Wheaton and American acceptances. Sorry to hear about Dickinson Cbreeze :(.

Congrats on Wheaton and American, sorry to hear about Dickinson and Northeastern…

The highest merit award is $17,500/ at Wheaton as I recall.
I have a child enrolled at Wheaton (MA). I usually use “MA” to clarify, as there is a Wheaton in Illinois.

@pdkof13 re Goucher:
DS did overnights at both Guilford and Goucher. Unfortunately, he went to Guilford during fall break (who knew to check the calendar? The soccer team had a home game!) Anyway, he came home liking Guiford and loving Goucher. We are from NYC and I think Goucher felt a little more like home and had more NYC kids. Not sure-he is a child of few words. But I’m happy. If he makes the team, we can go to some of his games more easily than if he were in NC.

Re Wheaton (MA), lovely school. DD’s former BF attends. Tricky transportation to NY, though-two trains and a bus and a lot of schedule coordination.

cbreeze, I’ve posted before that DD’s guidance counselor told her that Dickinson was a reach, not a target when she was applying to colleges. Dickinson sees itself as quite selective, I think. Still, sorry!

pdkof13, congrats on Wheaton! I didn’t mean to rain on your parade with the transportation comment. It’s just something to consider when deciding.

I am so happy for you all. I have a D13 who was EA to UVA, but an S14 who fits here perfectly. Your stories make me happy- the schools D looked at are not schools he will, with one exception. Are the GPAs you all are relying on largely weighted or unweighted, though- obviously, that can make a big difference in acceptances.
Congratulations again! Its an exciting and scary time- for the kids and for us!

My D was just admitted to American (WMP), so that gives us an option closer to home if she feels she wants it.

89Wahoo. My D had an uw GPA. Her first two years really sunk it but she turned things around junior and senior year. Her GPA clearly did not get her into college–but her SATs and LoR, plus a strong essay did. We never imagined that she’d get the acceptances she did (including two EAs). You may find your son’s process less intimidating that your daughters.

Updating with American for my D (I think we’re not the only one, either)
