My D is a junior at. CA high school and lurking on this thread and seeing all your wonderful news is keeping me relatively calm as we embark on this college craziness. Congrats to all and thanks for posting your successes and challenges!

I was hoping that one of you might be able to help me out. My D asked me if I could add ‘ranking’ to the items on the decision spreadsheet.

I honestly don’t understand the ranking stuff. I see one school is National Rank #165 and another school is Regional #13. Does US News rank top 200 schools and then the rest are ranked by region? So #165 would be higher ranked than Regional #6??

[Methodology: Best Colleges Ranking Category Definitions - US News and World Report](http://www.usnews.com/education/best-colleges/articles/2012/09/10/methodology-best-colleges-ranking-category-definitions-2)

US News uses the Carnegie classification. One category does not come before another.

Thank you so much. Looks like Cal Lutheran is #14 out of 150 Regional West Universities and San Diego State is #165 out of 300 National Universities. That kind of makes Cal Lutheran look like a higher ranked college?

Oh well, not sure it really matters.

coralbrook-

Because they do not publish the raw scores, it is impossible to compare across categories. That said, Cal Lutheran and SDSU could not be more different. This is definitely a case in which, regardless of ranking, a student could be far more comfortable at one rather than the other.

coral, take a look at Forbes ranking, which ranks colleges and universities together.

For those who are new to this thread, thinking about next year, many of us recommend the book Colleges That Change Lives, by Loren Pope (updated recently by another author). Most of those schools accept B and C students and are known for turning them into scholars, with high placement at professional and graduate schools. Many of our 3.0 kids have been accepted at these schools, with great merit scholarships. These schools are also known for great undergraduate teaching and substantial academic support, whether or not there are LD issues.

daisychain,
Congratulations! Nice choices…

Thanks all. Thrilled and grateful that D has these choices, now to her decisions!

@Daisychain,

You give my D15 and me hope!

Congratulations to all of the Class of 2013 within this thread, as you’ve all showed “B” students can gain acceptance to great schools, too.

To the parents, I thank you for giving my D hope to seek out the best schools via fit and stats and to also DREAM BIG, but realistically.

This thread is a celebration of the B student!

Goucher also shares a consortium with Johns Hopkins! My D13 looked at Goucher and we found out on our visit that she could take Japanese at JHU. I think there’s even a shuttle service available, but I may be confusing that with Hampshire/Amherst consortium.

^^^ You are correct, jkiwmom, as Goucher belongs to the BSEP that includes a huge list of schools. Students can take courses not offered at Goucher during fall & spring semesters and have those grades submitted and counted towards their degree.
[Baltimore Student Exchange Program : Goucher College](Baltimore Student Exchange Program | Goucher College)

This looks really promising for D because Goucher is tied for #1 on her list of schools with Muhlenberg.

To add to the range of schools in this thread, I want to add that my 3.1 GPA, 1210/1850 (SAT) DD was accepted to Mt. Holyoke. Definitely a reach school for her. Not sure if she will attend - may be too academically intense for her. She is also considering some of the schools mentioned frequently in this thread.

adding DS acceptances

Congratulations, HeavyLidded! Wooster is wonderful - I loved the campus and the kids. It seems there is tremendous academic support there. I am sure your D will do well.

Congrats HeavyLidded! I am having so much fun reading about all the decisions. Although the Duckling did ED and we deposited long ago at RIT, we are still planning to go to the Accepted Students Day on Friday. It’s beginning to seem so real!

Congrats, HeavyLidded, well done!

I was strangely sad yesterday as I unsubscribed from the many CC forums of the colleges my son won’t be attending, now that he has made his choice. Are some of you feeling that way, too?

So many of the schools would have been good choices for him, and most of the admissions folks were extraordinarily nice, honest and kind. Maybe we should create a best and worst list!

Wonderful news about Wooster, HeavyLidded! One of my top choices for DS but oh well…

Jane345, I know just what you mean. We still have adcoms calling, even though DS notified all colleges withdrawing his application weeks ago when we paid the deposit for the University of P u g et S o u nd - we both felt strongly about the possibility that his “spot” could be taken by another student who wouldn’t have to be waitlisted (apparently, very few do this, and the admissions staff have been very appreciative.)

I will forever be grateful to the adcom at Oh io We sl e y an who just happened to call and leave the most wonderful voice message in the dark days after DS received his crushing (and IMO very curt and dismissive) ED rejection from C o l or a d o College. His message notifying DS of his acceptance and scholarship was warm, positive and personal with mentions of specific strengths and accomplishments…just could not have been better! Ohio W e sl e y an later sent even more grant money to add to the generous merit already offered.

OWU would definitely be on my Best list, our experience with C ol or a d o College (not just the rejection, but some other experiences with FA and admissions) puts it on the Worst list, along with H en d r i x who had the most arrogant, condescending and unhelpful adcom we encountered

Yay HeavyLidded!! Does you D plan to take advantage of the free bagpipe lessons? :)
