Parents of the HS Class of 2013 - 3.0 to 3.3 GPA

Friends experienced in sending kids off to college have urged caution…do I really want to know that my child never washed the sheets all semester? Apparently one (admittedly) pricey bonus of residential college life is that we do not have to personally witness the chaos, drama and bacteria cultures of our baby birds taking flight :)

I SO know what you all mean about the senioritis. This week, I missed an important PA meeting at S’s school because is was the day after accepted students day at his college (and I was tired from the drive.) I felt so, “Well we’re in college now…” and saved myself the trip, after a full day’s work. I’m feeling a but like a slacker, but, hey-he IS a senior and we HAVE paid our dues.

I too am looking forward to a bit of “distance” from d’s day-to-day struggles, mistakes, etc. I have been trying all year (with the exception of the college app process) to take a step back but just because I’m keeping my mouth shut doesn’t mean I don’t notice or worry! She has to manage a medical condition so the stakes are higher than for the average teen. She shares a lot so I’m sure I’ll still hear about things but probably in “digest” version a few times a month. It will be good for both of us!

Just popping in as a parent of a 2014 HS grad who will probably be in the 3.4 range by the time of application, thanks to good Junior year grades (nearly straight A’s!) … I want to thank you all for taking the time to post admissions!

Your list makes me feel a lot better and has reaffirmed that we are looking at the right segment of schools for my DS: James Madison, Loyola Maryland, Miami (OH), George Mason, U. Dayton, St. Josephs (Phila.), Fairfield. He’s got a few reaches on his list too, (Boston College, Northeastern, Purdue), but that’s OK, why not! There are some pretty good stories on here!

I know that I am ready to let my son start this next phase of his life. Could it be that I am more excited about him going to college than he is? I am actually thrilled that he will have the opportunities and experiences that I did not have when I graduated high school even though I am not sure that he really understands or appreciates what he is being given. Kids…sigh. LOL!

What’s that saying? “Youth is wasted on the young”. I know that I’m more excited about my son going to college than he is. I guess I have the advantage of hindsight, whereas for him, it’s all unknown.

We just signed up for S’s fall housing. He got his first choice special interest group residence (surprising, since he got a relatively late registration time) in what looks like the newest dorm. So this has added to the excitement. He does need to get through high school first though - and he is having significant issues with one of his classes. How my standards have slipped - at this point I would not be (too) upset with a D. Lots of time-consuming activities at the moment, including a nice role in our spring musical and preparation for a national tournament in his EC. Must stay focused on getting to the finish line with passing grades!

We should have a big “Off to College” party. Except only parents can attend…I’ll bring the blender for Margarita’s!

Happy the stress of applications, selection, finances (except for 20 years of student loan bills) is all in the rear view mirror.

“Off to College” party sounds good to me! I have been trying to get DS to fill out his housing form and freshman seminar choice form this week. Between golf and school musical practice I have only seen him about one hour–but he needs to get this done this weekend. Then he needs to check on his summer job status-- I guess I am not done with the nagging yet!

The 3rd edition of “Who’s Kid is Going Where”.

For those that missed it, I am compiling a list via PM so that the thread is not clogged up with long lists. This is where each child has decided to attend - not all acceptances. I went back several pages in addition to the PMs sent. I apologize if I missed anyone. Send me a PM if you’d like me to add your child on the next list. I’ll wait until a have a handful before adding on.

New additions should be in bold (assuming I do the formatting correctly!). We’re getting quite an impressive list!

I’m loving the matriculation list–added Muhlenberg & Mills to BunHeadGirl’s research list.

Thanks, Class of 2013 and parents.

DS has sent an email to Wheaton appealing his lack of merit scholarship - attached the seven award letters he received from other schools. Please send positive vibes - really hopes he gets something so he can commit to Wheaton.

Sending positive vibes your way, Pkdof13.

Wow, I missed Idahomom’s announcement somewhere! Way to go

I am busy nagging D to PLEASE notify her other schools. Earlier this week we got a reminder call from U of Denver that we had reserved for Pioneer Days. Ooops, forgot to cancel that  even though we sent a withdrawal letter to Dir of Admissions, I don’t think the left hand talks to the right hand. Still getting mailings from several other schools.

D has sent regrets to all (10!) of her other schools, except the #2. I think it is still too hard for her to burn her bridge to that one. I nagged about the others but I’ll hold my tongue about #2 until she’s ready. There’s still a (miniscule) chance that she’ll change her mind between now and May 1.

Thanks, HL. Heading to Boston with DD for Wellesley admitted students days. She is still wavering among six schools - by the end of this week, and visits/revisits to four of them, she should have a decision.

Good luck pkd on Wheaton appeal and with all the visits! I am exhausted just reading your schedule

Thanks Coral-- after $$ appeal rejected at LMU his decision was made.

S still has 2 schools left to send regrets. The schools with a form were easy-- the last 2 he needs to send notes. One is a school that has been super nice all along and I feel bad about the no. The other is LMU-- and I think for DS it is too soon for him to send the final No in.

Sent from my Nexus S 4G using CC

Whoops, sorry about the blank post, working CC from my mobile Kindle Fire is a little challenging! I just want to say that there was one school that D just withdrew that has outstanding communication, Marketing and sends the love -Montana State. Would highly recommend to future students that are applying.

They actually had a great combined film and photography major that would have been perfect for D.But she just could not get past the location and weather. They really push the graduate in 4 yrs and have great merit and scholarships for OOS. Especially for our group although I think D’s ACT was superscored to 27 which was very nice of them. In fact we got an updated higher merit award after final ACT score was sent in. They are rolling admissions and her first acceptance, which is always cool.

For those in the West, they do the tuition exchange if you can get ACT 28.

Just sat down with DS and filled out the Housing application. Wanted to get it done before he goes back to school tomorrow after April vacation. Have been reminding him all week to get it done. Nothing like waiting till the last day! Was interesting to see what he answered for the questions that are used to match up roommates! (sleeping habits, studying habits, etc.)
