Parents of the HS Class of 2013

DDHM, I do remember We Are the Champions drifting by, but I had no idea who sang it.
I have no plausible excuses, so I won’t offer any.

DS started complaining about the lack of popular music in our house when he was 10 or so, and I realized some of what I’d been missing. I love having kids! So eye-opening! And I found I really liked Queen, and the Beatles, and the Plain White Ts, etc. But our radios are still set to our three public radio stations–two are talk and one is exclusively classical. :)

I think the HelloKitty sleeping bag would be a bold choice. He could bring a Power Rangers pillowcase to show his diversity. Of course, revealing that I didn’t listen to Queen in the 80s has made me lose all credibility on this thread!

Geo, your daughter seems to be making great choices. Hope she loves Tulane.

" I do remember We Are the Champions drifting by, but I had no idea who sang it. "
Well, doesn’t this mean you DID listen to Queen then? You just didn’t know who was singing it. You have retained your credibility.

Not a Power Rangers fan. He was more of a Bionicle dude. Much more manly. Although, prior to Bionicles, he was a fan of Jupiter. Not the God, the planet. Do you know how hard it is to sew a Jupiter Halloween costume for a two year old, including all the orbiting Galilean moons (which he could name and describe)? Hum. Come to think of it, easier than college apps, that’s how hard.

Hey Eastgrad I’m with ya on the music thing. I do recall We Are the Champions butwasn’t a fan of Freddie until DD10 became so fascinated and shared. I’m a talk radio girl myself - can’t carry a tune in a bucket…so I sure am impressed by our kids with musical talent.

Good idea about the self defense classes. I asked myself why I hadn’t thought of that before and I realized DD10 and DD13 have be in bands since middle school so you could say they have never walked alone. If DD13 did she was likely carrying a big flag pole not particularly attractive to muggers I would think…but now off she goes into the big wide world. Yes! Some classes are in order.

My son packed his sleeping bag in his duffle bag when he went on his overnights. The duffle went into the overhead.

Confetti - I know right? Moving in twice would be such a hassle. I keep meaning to call them and ask about that.

One of the 1st albums I owned was Queen’s “The Game”. I LOVED Crazy Little Thing Called Love.

Thanks, DDHM, for helping me retain some dignity.

I’d recommend him wearing his Jupiter costume, it’d probably fit like a shirt now, to CPW (shout-out to Uni for the acronym clarification–never could understand why there wasn’t an M in there somewhere). When queried about his shirt, your DS can talk about how awesome his mom is! Just a suggestion…

PounceCat, great to have other friends here! Warm welcome! But Ree, you are too cool. I will stand a little way off.

Geo - Tulane does a very good job with their accepted students day. I wanted to go to Tulane after the visit…the President is very charismatic. Tulane was one of my D1’s final choices but she decided that the humidity and her very curly hair could never be friends…one of those silly reasons that doesn’t make sense…she is now at at an urban northern school. D’13 decided to go south…go figure.

I can donate both a Pokemon and a Yu-gi-oh pillowcase to the slumber party, but you can’t have my Bert-and-Ernie comforter!

DDHM - I can’t even imagine a Jupiter Halloween costume. My best effort was matching Zan and Jayna costumes when the kids were 4 and 2. I think I still have the “Z” and “J” somewhere (I took them off later to make the turtlenecks wearable).

I had a practice in college - learn about a new band from each new boyfriend. That ranged from Killdozer to the Flaming Lips to the Stone Ponies. College was fun.

One of S13’s friends decided not to apply somewhere because there was “too much grass” and he meant the lawns. This is where you have to believe there’s a better reason that they can’t put into words!

Humidity. Never having a good hair day. Hmmm, that is a good point momofboston. It’s a balancing act…

How can you not love Queen?

Wait - is that the sound of Freddy Mercury rolling over in his grave? Nope - just a post from SomeOldGuy

It’s funny what kids want and don’t want in a college: When S2 started his search he said “Must be urban, have nice dorms and have fast food nearby - preferably Chik-fil-a.” What did he pick? Small town (“too many trees. They make me nervous” - S2 upon first seeing Princeton), 1950’s dorms and no fast food within the city limits. But he’s happy with it!

I think the Pok

Freddie is rolling over because Miss Piggy stole his dress. But maybe you’ll like a Black Sabbath cover better.

Heard ‘Crazy Little Thing Called Love’ tonight…how can anyone not like Queen???

Someoldguy - I can’t thank you enough for that Muppets clip. I watched the Muppet show every chance I got growing up and all of those characters brought back my childhood. You rock.

Re: Music - I grew up in a house where John Denver was played exclusively (thanks mom  ) so no, I had no idea who Queen was until late High School years when I must have seen them on MTV or something. I think by college I knew who they were.

Bigdoglover - Well, it might have been the Fab Fiver you picked, but then again…there are 4 more…ha. I’ll tell you at Angelo’s this Fall. (ha.) Not going to the Final Four, but will be watching with interest on Saturday and hopefully Monday!

Geo - A friend of Step-D’s is going to Tulane next fall. Wonderful school in a magical place. Hope she has a great visit.

Confetti - I absolutely love the ‘too much grass’ critique. Who knew picturesque lawns would be an application deterrent!

laurendog - really, exclusively? No Joni Mitchell or Joan Baez? Anne Murray? Not even a little Peter, Paul & Mary?

I grew up in an area where the local radio station played both kinds of music – country AND western. My first week down at college, I heard U2’s “Pride (In the Name of Love)” on the radio and knew I had finally reached a better place.

confetti - Well, isn’t Leaving on a Jet Plane a Peter, Paul and Mary song too? JD wrote it, I know that. At any rate, mom did have ONE Kenny Rogers cd or single so I can sing all the lyrics of 'The Gambler" if you’d like. (ha.) And, I think Dad liked Cat Stevens because every now and then I remember listening to various Cat songs and I will find myself absentmindedly singing “I’m being followed by a Moon Shadow, Moon Shadow, Moon Sha-dow.”

In my mother’s defense, she did end up working for John Denver, so her fan-dom wasn’t all for naught.

Someoldguy - both kinds of music! LOL!!

Someoldguy - Both kinds of music … ROFLMAO! hey, I’m new here where’s the like button thingie?

Megpmom: “too many trees. They make me nervous” - S2 upon first seeing Prin ce ton"
True story: We had a huge lightning storm quickly descend upon us when our group toured Pton two summers ago. The intelligent Pton undergrad taking us around ushered us quickly over to … the tallest tree on campus to “take cover.” Just guessing, but I’m thinking she did not get accepted based on scouting skills.

I’m off to the real world for a few days while we head to P e n n. Looks like nobody has come from below decks to announce that they are attending too. Enjoy the imusic while I am gone. I’ll come back either “Death on Two Legs” or, if fed well, one of the “Fat Bottomed Girls.”
