Parents of the HS Class of 2013

I’m going to have to catch up with this thread later…can’t wait to find out where the Queen/Muppets references started. That will have to wait until tomorrow though. I can’t keep my eyes open right now, but I had to come and share…

I just had a COMPLETELY & TOTALLY AWESOME experience! My D just had her original orchestral composition performed by a professional orchestra tonight. I don’t even know how to describe how proud I am of her.

Going Confetti Style  :)

W2behome-Congratulations to your D! That is absolutely amazing! What a moment. Wish we could hear it!

SomeOld Guy- I had the same gut reaction to U2 and I love them in concert! Joshua Tree is my favorite album of all time! You guys might like this documentary film [It Might Get Loud Trailer (2009) - Video Detective](<a href=“Video Detective”>Video Detective)
my kids love it too! The Edge, Jimmy Page and Jack White on guitar playing and their groups!

DDHM, mnmom and SomeOldGuy- Freddie was out there but wow! Just saw Muse and they were fantastic in concert! Very much the 2013 rock opera type concert.

TX5- yeah…circle done! Go Cal! :)

Pounce- good to have you in the mix! I agree with TX5 on Davis. There are some people here know UCD very well. They might comment. The times I have been there, it is in a great town filled with students and families.

Geogirl-Fun weekend in NOLA for father/daughter! Tulane has a great feel! Decisions, decisions!

YDS- I ahve same def. for Throw Down. How about “Grovel”? Did you guys grovel in college? My kids cringe when I use that term!

Haystack-H and D went to Mumford and sons while on a college visit. Got chocked up at “Gonna miss nights like this”

Admitted Students Facebook pages are really doing a good job with D. At this point, all these little things are making an impression for my “on the fence” kid. Her top 2 are doing a great job! I will be sad that she can only attend one. Anyone else feeling that way?

Queen:

Went to a Queen concert back in the day (I’m not saying how long ago that day was) and it was fantastic! (And yes, I really can still remember that far back-the short term memory goes first!)

Both kinds of music-ha! Our mom listened to country/western, and opera/musicals plus every other crazy thing imaginable. Last month at knowledge bowl there was a question about a goofy song that only S knew because his grandma goes around singing it- a civil war song. This has happened more often that he would care to explain. My brother and I used to listen to the Beatles/Monkeys courtesy of our much older siblings. That’s what I would fall asleep to at night. Speaking of two kinds of music, I always thought that was a reference to Donny and Marie… “I’m a little bit country, I’m a little bit rock and roll”?!

DDHM, Voltaire finds the Fat Bottomed Girls comment offensive.

W2, congrats on your daughter’s premiere!! That is exciting.

Oh my gosh, LaurenDog, my parents also listened to John Denver. We had about three eight-track tapes for our van: John Denver Rocky Mountain High, soundtrack for the Muppet Movie (Movin’ Right Along), and Crystal Gayle. I come by my pop music illiteracy honestly. Besides this, my parents were pretty great.

We2BeHome, that’s terrific–I know how hard it is to get an orchestra to play anything but Beethoven. Is the performance of your D’s piece up on youtube or elsewhere we can see/hear it? I know I’d love to do so myself.

EastGrad - “Country Rooads…Take me Hoooome…”

I second what tougis wrote. Is there anyway we can hear her composition W2Be? Congratulations to her!!

Ok. I admit it. I love John Denver. I also love Cat Stevens. And, just saying’ Zeppelin, country, and New Orleans jazz. All depends on the mood. Jimmy Buffet still needs to be playing on this cruise though.
D was asked to speak on morning announcements about her college choice today. I guess every day a different senior is talking? She’s excited, getting more so daily. She showed me her ‘script’. Said the first two talked about intellectual stimulation and deep academic inquiries. Was not impressed by them. She’s talking about potential majors she will choose, but says she is interested in Greek life (semi- news to me) and enjoying all the sports as well as the stunning Lawn at UVA and giving a plug to a summer program there called Leadership in the Lawn. She loved it last year and it cemented UVA as her top choice. It’s nice that she has known for months where she was going but the excitement is growing daily it seems. Of course last night she said she will miss us and be home a lot. I told her she won’t feel that way by the end of September. I however am going to miss her like crazy. I’m hoping my own memories of the place, and excitement about all the fun she will have, will prevent me from being too sad when she goes. Doubt it will work, but hoping…

LOL l-dog - can’t argue with that. My mom would be so jealous!

pouncecat - they got rid of the like button thinging because Some people were not using it in the manner in which it was intended . So you just have to post a “like” post :D

We had the same music as SomeOldGuy, plus one other radio station - the kind with Kasey Kasum’s Top 40.

Oh My Gosh W2BeHome - that is so fantastic! Oh you must be bursting! She’s going to be studying film, right - does this tie in to that? I’m woefully ignorant of the field.

wherenext, S13 doesn’t want to join a FB until he has a decision. I can’t decide if that’s good or bad (no help with decision, no sadness on the other end).

My mom listened to folk, and my dad was more Dylan / Eagles / Fogarty. We saw Dylan when I was in college - now that was an interesting concert.

The only thing I knew how to do
Was to keep on keepin’ on like a bird that flew…

{{{not thinking about Forever Young. nope, not doing it}}}

EastGrad - The Muppet Movie is one of my all-time favorites. My college roomie and I used to watch it as a reward after every finals week.

89wahoo - so cool that she’s excited! We’ll all have to come here and share stories of everyone’s great successes to help with being too sad.

I still love John Denver. I’ll never forget Zach’s first Christmas when I pulled out my John Denver and the Muppets Christmas album and A Baby Just Like You started (“you’ve given back my joy in life, and filled me with new meaning… Merry Christmas, little Zachary…”). That did it for me. Still does :).

We really should request a “stoic, smiling through the tears” emoticon. Certainly it would get used here!

Oh my. Since I triggered the nostalgia wave, maybe I can snap us out of it by playing one of Devil Child’s (a.k.a, “Hipster Boy,” per his younger brother) current heavy rotation artists.

[Tame Impala - Feels Like We Only Go Backwards](<a href=“- YouTube”>- YouTube)

Any switches from passengers to servers on the USS Indecision this week?

Confetti. We need to find a kid who can make that emoticon! :)

I wish, SomeOldGuy, but I’m afraid you’ll be serving me until May 1. S told me last night that we were not going to the OSU event tomorrow…they are officially off the list. He did his declines yesterday. We are down to Duke, Vandy, CMU, Pitt, and Alabama. Still awaiting info on two scholarships and need to do FA appeals for the first three.

My mom listened to Neil Diamond exclusively…thank goodness for older brothers. I’ll admit, I do kind of like hearing Forever in Blue Jeans. :)

SomeOldGuy: do we get a prize for being the last one of the USS Indecision? MommyDearest13 and I could be fighting it out for that prize!!!

Based on the last few pages of activity, it seems as if the prize is a hard-earned case of alcohol poisoning, but maybe we can downgrade that to a box set of the collected works of Charles Bukowski.

pffft, don’t forget me sitting in the corner lounge chair. I’ll take a virgin bloody mary this morning please and thank you.

My parents listened to jazz, from Stan Getz, Ella, Billie Holiday, Duke, and their favorites I believe were Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker. My age is showing but I could never figure out why my dad was surprised that Chicago, The Commodores and Earth Wind and Fire were amongst my favorites - it was his influence!

I had an Alvin and the Chipmunks country album when I was a kid. I think that and whatever country crossed over (I’m thinking Oakridge Boys and Kenny Rogers) were my only exposure to country as a child. But somewhere along the way, I picked up a liking for Dwight Yokam via Guitars and Cadillacs. There was no folk music in my house growing up. It was a 60’s and 70’s soul and R&B household.

Hey all–I’ve been off the grid for a few days (weeks?) but am happy to report I can now join the wait staff on the SS Indecision. DS will be attending the University of Montana in the fall.

I’m pretty good with a tray of full glasses but you do not want me on roller skates.

Go Griz.

:)

Congrats, MyLB! Big sky!

MyLB, I think Montana is really cool. Which I mean in a good way… But LOL shortly after H and I got married, I had this bizarre dream where I was in Montana and surrounded but mountains (in a valley of some sort?) I woke H up by talking in my sleep saying, “I don’t want to live in Montana!!” He was extremely confused, and wanted an explanation. I still can’t explain it. I would love to visit there some day though.
Ree, I love guitars, cadillacs too. I had totally forgotten that song.
This thread rocks. (pun intended) I love the strange tangents that it goes on.
I was over on the 2017 HS thread (yikes) and someone was saying her kid was not a math wiz and she felt like she didn’t belong here. I was so sad. I told her about our thread and that nobody cares if your kid isn’t going to an Ivy- we cheer every one of them for finding the place that will make them happy. CC is definitely not for the faint of heart, is it?

Congrats to MyLB & all those who are making decisions.

We are still doing the LIMBO on the lido deck! :D

“CC is definitely not for the faint of heart, is it?”

It certainly isn’t. This week’s hot discussion (the WSJ article kid) leaves me wondering whether some of these folks are real people, single-issue cranks, or long-form trolls. And I’m not sure which answer I’d find most disturbing.
