We don’t do anything school-wide with photos. But there are slide shows at the theater banquet, the choir banquet and the elementary school reunion breakfast - so I need to go and find some cute pictures. Thank god there are no arts and crafts involved!

S2 feels a little redeemed after the musical theater award fiasco. Yesterday, was the regional choir (UIL) competition and he had a large solo. Not only did their school get straight “1’s” from every judge, but the choir teacher got calls from other teachers asking “who is your soloist? He was terrific!” Yay, for S2. He really shouldn’t care so much about getting the recognition, but that’s the life of an artist. He soaks up the praise.

Also, he’s in the running for prom king. So, I guess he’s going to go! He is trying to think of a fun way to ask his BFF - but all of his ideas are scary or dangerous or both. I have told him to involve her older sister. She’s creative, but realistic (S2 is not either!)

Speaking B52’s/megpmom: Yesterday I accidently came across the (current) website of a punk rock group whose lead singer and cellist (yeah, now a punk cellist although he played bass when I knew him) were musicians in my high school over 30 years ago. Amazingly, they have been a professional band all this time. They were always a crowd favorite at our school’s annual talent show, but I’m gobsmacked that they actually have been earning a living doing this all these years! Maybe there is hope for our artistic kids.

CPW kids are still in re-entry orbital black-out. I await a text, sometime in the next four days. Maybe.

FlyMe: The punk cellist was also our Yearbook Editor. I bet he could do a great job on the memory board for you. Our school’s only acknowledgement is to put yard signs around the school indicating the colleges that the Seniors plan to attend. Each year, it is essentially the same ~25 colleges, nearly all within the state or an adjoining one.

DDHM … Just got a call from D13 that she and unboyfriend just landed in BOS. Apparently, there’s is another CPWer on their connecting flight. I told D13 if I don’t get health & welfare calls daily I’ll let the Cuban mom side of me call up there & make things pretty embarrassing for her. I was only 1/2 kidding when I told her that. LOL!

FlyMeToTheMoon - don’t think we are close enough geographically for me to make your cake or I would. :). That display board thing is something I’d love (I’m pretty crafty) but D13’s class is over 400 students. Mary club has an annual slideshow prepped by one of the students …

Glad you all are talking about parties and decorations. S’s HS colors clash horribly with the college ones, so there is no way to combine them without doing something that would hurt my eyes. We will be mentioning the college on the party invites. I think I will decorate in the HS colors - we can use the college colors in 4 years :)

Good morning cruisers! I am late for my shift today because I was busy below deck (actually I was working my regular job).

Grad Party: We will go with college colors. I think we did the same for #1 and #2. For #1 the college and HS colors are pretty similar, but for #2 and now #3 the high school colors are the colors of a rival school for the college, and all clothes in those colors will remain at home because they are “forbidden”. We are putting DS’s future plans on the back of the announcement/invitation.

DS is on the FB site for admitted students and has been talking (messaging?) other kids on the site and finding all sorts of things in common. It makes me happy. We are going to a local admitted students event on Sunday, and then next weekend he will go up for a sleep-over event.

DS has a friend at school (who is an excellent student) who has gotten into a lot of really, really great schools, but not "“the” school she had her heart set on (which was a reach or maybe even a super-reach). So she has decided to go to CC and try again in 2 years. DS thinks she is making a huge mistake.

Correction to my last post … Math club, not Mary club. Darn autocorrect!

Tx5athome - I think your DS is right! What’s that phrase about a “bird-in-hand”?? I hope she’s not waiting for an acronym school because transfer numbers are even more bleak than freshman admission stats!! I mean, if she’s doing it because she can’t afford it and needs to save $$ that’s a different story. /sigh/ The pressure they are all under is insane & the best decisions aren’t always made at times like these.

YDS & Mamabear1234 … (heading back to pg 1552 here as I catch up) Have your kiddos made any headway with their choices? Are they going to the admitted student days for Pomona & their other choices?? D13 was accepted to Pomona also and she’s genuinely sad she has to decline them because they’ve been super nice, she genuinely loved her visit, and they’ve been so awesome. But she primarily applied for their 3-2 program with C A L T E C H and was accepted there directly. Plus their FA was not where we needed it. Either way our kids go, they’re going to do great. Their top choices are all that … top, fantastic choices. They will flourish regardless of where they attend.

DDHM … I’m thoroughly impressed with our colleagues who have been able to work as professional musicians over the years. It’s always a blessing to truly make a living pursuing your passions. Any news from S13? Did you introduce him to Unicam by any chance??

cari, Pomona was hands-down the best FA package for us, which is what kept it in the running. Ds was going to go to an accepted students weekend, but could only attend part of it because of a conflict (he has conflicts every weekend this month). The school basically said, yeah, you’ll miss too much of our program so don’t bother (and they were paying for it so it certainly was their prerogative). I was so disappointed because I think ds really was open to it. But now, he’s pretty committed to the no. 1 school. We should probably just send in the check and I could jump off the deck chair, but I want to talk to the no. 1 about money one more time.

Cari: I think I will only be getting CPW reports via CariDD13 through you. DS13 is too independent; consequently, I didn’t try to get him in touch with our foster ichildren. His primary job this weekend is to decide his dorm ranking. If I’m lucky, tomorrow I might get one text, maybe, saying nothing more than “alive” or something.

Warn your DD that it is supposed to be pouring for much of tomorrow in Boston. Cold too. I didn’t even bother suggesting that DS pack an umbrella; he would never carry it around anyway. Of course, umbrellas are usually useless on that campus, too many wind tunnels between the buildings and off the river.

carmama, nope, can’t make it to admitted students days at either. Too much going on here and CA is too far from PA! She saw Pomona last summer and again in January when we were in the area for a tournament. Met with the coach and really likes the school. I am going to take her for a visit at the other, closer school, but only on a Saturday to see a game and spend more time on campus. She did an overnight there in the fall. They are both great schools, I just keep repeating to myself in my head!

DDHM, that is how I get info on my S who is a college soph, from the mom of his friend at the same school. She keeps me updated, shows me pictures, etc.

Two years ago, I received a panicked call from DTwin. “Mom! The car won’t start! What do I do? I think my battery is dead.” “Maybe the wheels are turned too much,” I suggest. “Straighten them out and try again.” “Nope, it still won’t start.”

I drive to the the location, battery cable in the trunk. I get into the front seat…and notice that the car is in Drive.

Parents of New Drivers: Tell the kids that if you don’t turn the key enough, the radio comes on, but the engine doesn’t engage. Some cars will allow you to shift the car out of Park, but nothing happens when you push the gas. Then the kids turn the key again, but nothing happens cause the car is not in Park. Then they get completely confused, and forget that the car is in Drive or Reverse. The solution, of course, is to put the car back into Park and turn the key again.

Wednesday afternoon this week: Dtwins call me from the school’s parking lot. “Mom! The car won’t start! What do we do?”

“Is the car in Park?” “Yes, of course, Mom. We aren’t stupid.”
“Are your wheels straight?” “Not completely, but I can’t even turn the key; therefore the steering column stays locked, and I can’t turn the wheels.”

DH and I drive to the school. The key won’t turn. At all. We drive them home.

Wednesday Evening, 10 pm: DH and I are back at the school, watching a flatbed’s winch drag the immovable carcass of Tuitionmobile’03 onto the truck. Because the front wheels are turned and therefore won’t roll, I watch the front end alignment, and possibly some axle connections, probably get torqued into the next universe. The Flatbed Dude did the best he could to get the miscreant Tuitionmobile on board, not his fault.

Because children may be attending today’s Story Time, I won’t tell you how much it costs to replace an ignition lock cylinder.

I should have taken more notice of our conversation a few days ago. Take heed folks; it was an omen.

^DDHM, I had to Google that one. Now that I’ve seen it, I kinda doubt that there are any mascot themes stuffed animals for sale at the RISD campus bookstore.
