Parents of the HS Class of 2013

Paaareeentsss!

I need your help! Anyone’s help, actually, but I can’t seem to figure it out! I totally forgot that I have to do my taxes until now…good thing I remembered at some point! What form am I supposed to fill out? I made around $1,900 in 2012, since apparently that matters?!

YDS - mojitos are awesome

terinzak - Ok - I am officially confused. Your DS graduates on May 17th - right? The AP exam for Chem is given on May 6th, 11 days before he graduates. He could take the AP exam on the 6th, graduate on the 17th and voila! Guess I’m not understanding what the conflict is…

tx5 - Thanks so much for putting the Masters on in the sports lounge! It was truly one of the best Masters ever! Amazing golfing - in the rain nonetheless! Cabrera didn’t win (my hero) but Adam Scott won for Australia and that was a neat moment to witness. Wonderful.

One funny thing for those of you familiar with Twitter. Adam Scott the golfer does not have a Twitter account. However Adam Scott the ~actor~ (Parks and Recreation) does have a Twitter account. Guess who is getting 10,000 congratulations Tweets from all over the world? Must be pretty interesting to be the ‘actor’ right now :p

Have to admit with all of the twists and turns getting a little sea-sick with all of you. pdk - I cannot even believe the travel schedule you have planned! Wowsa! You and your D are going to be exhausted! ** YDS** - we ~are~ docking on May 1st - right? I might need to get off at that point!

Congrats to all decisions made this week. Some really impressive happenings on this cruise! Here’s to a fun week of drinking (parents only  ) and decisions, backed up by the smooth melo sounds from DJ SomeOldGuy.

Just read five pages since Thursday. Everyone has been reporting great news, recipes, cake ideas and decisions. Going Confetti style and if I missed something…refer to her post :)

Momma, tougis and Kennedy- We are looking forward to D making her official decision this week. D and I just returned from the accepted students for Uchicago and I tried to figure out your kids to no avail. Very impressive Uni. and beautiful place. I really liked the whole package for D. D loved the class she went to, the campus, her roommate and “house” plus the very interesting offbeat interests everyone seemed to have. She loved it and intellectually knew it was the best fit. However, she felt like it was too much of a good thing for her, if that makes any sense at all. She lost sleep over it but figured out that there were many of her types and not enough of the rest of the general population, which works for a while but not 4 years.

Kelowna-Amazing scholarship! Is Duke “it”? I haven’t seen a commitment or have I?

pkd- We share that cuddly mascot!

Greek- Your son is brilliant and FEARLESS in his prom proposal! Love it! In Chcago we watched a kid write Prom? in the sand on the beach of Lake Michigan from our hotel in 36 degree weather. So cute! His girl must live in a high rise nearby.

Critter-Cracking up with the shuttle to my frat…It begins

Kat-horray for CAU!

Soemoldguy-Keep the great songs coming! Can you compile a list for grad ideas? Like you have time on your hands :)

Kennedy- Congrats to D! Wondering what made the difference for her too.

Sacchi-Dickenson is a great place to land!!!

Pounce- Greeks words might as well be gospel with her pixie dust. It will work out :)

tx5- hope the Cal reception went well! How fun for DS1 to work the Hall of Fame. I love that place!

I am caught up! Yeah! By the way, I have actually had real drinks with a CC’er recently. Such a cool mom…virtual or not…this is a great group!

laurendog: Okay I just asked him. He says that they have to do so many labs??? I really don’t get it either. If the ap exam is the 6th, he graduates on the 17th (assuming senior grades are done and locked in) then I think he shouldn’t have to go back either. Guess I have to email the teacher.

Swizzle – do a Google search for IRS “free file” and follow the instructions from there. You probably qualify to file an IRS Form 1040 EZ, unless most of your income is investment income and has to be reported on your parents’ return. It is not likely that you will actually owe tax but you migh be able to get your withholding back. Just remember not to claim any dependents – including yourself – if your parents still claim you on their return. It is actually pretty easy to do at your stage in life. DC got his done in about 25 minutes today.

Need a non alcoholic drink over here folks! (am nursing my 4 month old soooo). I don’t know where to start with my week! D13 left Thurs for a visit to a College which really wasn’t in the running, but went anyway. DH went with her. Long story short, they miss the flight and get put on standby. D13 has a great time, but knows this in not a fit for her. She had arranged to come back early as she had a chamber music competition, low and behold due to a series of sketchy plans, they miss the flight again! Now DD is missing the competition putting her group in a nasty bind. My phone is broken with overloaded texts from them asking me what to do. What can I do I’m not there!!! It’s scary because she goes on two back to back visits later this week. If she misses one more plane I’ll be questioning this going off to college thing!

Kennedy If it’s ok can you share why your daughter changed her mind? I have a good friend whose daughter is a freshman at WashU and she loves it so I understand from that regard, but I was wondering what she didn’t like after her visit to Chicago.

Sympathy to the early graduates with tests to take after graduation. Here the AP and IB tests finish just a couple of days before.

I was watching “The Voice” tonight, with college on the brain. I was thinking how funny it would be if College Admissions was like that. The admissions reps would be in swivel chairs. The prospective students would step up and read their stats and Essays, The reps would have to push their button and vie for the student…(I really need to get more sleep).

kennedy, unfortunately we had already visited and she liked WashU a lot…but I guess not enough. I really pushed her to at least revisit (they pay for flights) but no luck.

Guess I’ll have to go in her place…

D will be attending Carleton College. I am ready to serve while drinking myself.

Congrats on having a decision, psbltnr!!

tougis - your D is brilliant! Going along on trips to see other people’s schools? Marvelous!

ahsmuoh - Congrats!! So glad she’s happy!

Gasp, STEM - 4 weeks! Wow.

3Trip - hope you’re enjoying your earplugs. I understand now is time for them to “foul the nest” so it’s easier for them to leave? So the more grumply she is, the more she loves you.

I know, but it does help a little.

Passion fruit mojito here! 5 hours in the car and 4 hours cleaning the basement and I’m back home. One more carload of stuff to pick up (DH is going to kill me).

TVenee - I think college admissions actually does work a lot like that without the stage… hope all the flights go better from here.

Bigdog - DH wants to take S13’s place whichever he doesn’t choose.

psblstnr - congrats! Carleton looked like a great school (it was on my short list but never made it to S13’s). Ok, my short list was not really short.

Just found out that the picture for the band slideshow is due tomorrow <sigh>. Are we sure they’re ready?</sigh>

Bigdoglover - I know that it’s hard to pin a kid down about why or why not - right? The important thing is that every kid seems to find their right place - however they do that. Still a mystery to me…

TVenee - It wasn’t so much what was wrong with UChicago. UChicago had been her “dream school” for a long time and she was all set to go there in the fall. So I never saw this coming and I am still a little bit in shock. This is not the kid I dropped off last Thursday heading to Washu who didn’t even want to go. She only went because to Bigdoglover’s point they had already paid for her ticket.

2 minutes after she arrived on campus she texted me “mom - i’m here. it’s beautiful.” So I sort of knew right away that things had shifted.

She loved the people - to Wherenext’s D’s point mostly not like her. Very diverse environment that will stretch her. But also Washu put on a fantastic display of affection for those kids. She felt that they really cared about her. It was a very personal thing. She had dozens of little anecdotal examples of why she fell in love with it. So it is nothing against UChicago at all. It was just more of a gut feeling for her I think that this is where she belonged. Teenagers - got to love 'em.

Excellent choice, psbl!!! ;)

I’ve been busy this weekend and just catching up on all the news and decisions! D is creeping toward a decision - two steps forward, one step back. The latest concern is that the west coast LAC will be too laid back and not have enough intellectual conversations outside of class. I’m just waiting for her to figure it out.

Kennedy, when we visited WashU I got the feeling that they do take care of their students and do a lot to keep them happy. (D was waitlisted) Congrats!

I will quickly enjoy some chardonnay, while I still can ;)

Happy Easter to Greekmana, travel safe!

Oh, YDS you are missing out! Let me take you out for mojitos!!! I even grow mint in my backyard for those special occasions!

Sent from my VM670 using CC

If you’re buying, I’m trying! Mojitos for me!

TVenee- I can’t even fathom how you have the energy to make it through each day let alone keep up with missed flights AND post on CC!!! You are truly unbelievable! My hat’s off to you!

Sent from my VM670 using CC

Just peeking in and reading pages more or less at random - missing my sick leave that allowed me to make this thread my full time job. (Though not missing being sick, thanks very much. ;-)

Congrats all around, and especially to Kelowna on the Robertson, Kat on Full Tuition at A C U. Psbl, great choice and congratulations on being done! And congrats to the rest of you whose decisions I didn’t catch – those still waiting, I’m on the boat with you.

Delighted that you have acquired a DJ, and I see many other great threadly additions.

How’s Voltaire?

Pounce, do you have a C B Y X er? My D1 did high school in 3 and then C B Y X as a gap year. Amazing experience! PM me if you have questions.

D is on the left coast right now, having been flown out by a women’s college that is in a consortium with four others. She arrives back late Tues night, then flies out in the wee hours of Thurs. morning to visit an LAC in St. Paul. After that she may know what she wants, though DH may insist that she revisit another LAC in the Phila area. And then there’s a school in the Bronx that has offered a terrific scholarship that she mentions now and then…

Still, I think we may well be done on Sunday. I’m so far out of the loop here - when she decides, do I start serving drinks?

Late to work now, but you guys are worth it.

Good morning, folks! In honor of our Carleton acceptance and the St. Paul visit, we’re kicking it Twin Cities style this morning with two selections. First, we’ll go old school with Morris Day and the Time. (Unfortunately, the “Purple Rain” version of this tune has been very aggressively pruned from YouTube by Warner Brothers, so we’re left with a muddied track.) Then, we’ll celebrate one of the best local music scenes in the country with this charming song from Jeremy Messersmith.

Devil Child loved Carleton so much that I was sure he was going to apply ED there and actually spent half an hour grilling him on why it wasn’t his first choice based on all the criteria he had been using. We loved everything about that school – the community, the quality of teaching, the picture-perfect smalltown setting, and the Arb. It’s even within terrestrial listening range of The Current (89.3 FM), which is probably the best still-breathing alternative station around. I’m just a wee bit jealous this morning.

SomeOldGuy, no kids around here listen to the radio! It all comes through the phone/computer. You could pick up your favorite station anywhere with live streaming. D liked Carleton too, but she liked everywhere she applied. (We have a good public alternative station in Pittsburgh too!)
