We haven’t really had time for wistful around here. After the whirlwind of prom and commencement, Devil Child spent a whopping two days at home before traveling halfway across the country for his summer job. He was last seen disappearing into the woods for a staff meeting. And he did not look back.

S received his common reading book in the mail yesterday. Huh??? I’m not even ready for graduation. I wish they could hold off on these reminders just a little longer.

So, any of your kids NOT answering emails or filling out forms for thier college stuff? My kiddo is not looking on her college email account…and I can see there are things they are beginning to expect her to fill out or look into…I have a feeling it is partly because she is not so “into” the school…

Hey guys, has any of you who is an international student been requested by colleges a transcript issued by domestic high school that you attended before coming to US? Like, literally, required to be sent from the high school at your home country? Or other forms that satisfy their requirements?

drmom123-- don’t worry, even if it was her dream school chances are she would still be lackadaisical! I just don’t get teenagers. I was never like that!

reeinaz-- I think it’s great that they send the books early. My son actually emailed his school to see if he could get it early because once he leaves the country after graduation he won’t be back until about a week until he has to be at school. Unfortunately he won’t get it in time. And his school has three books!

@reeniez-I bought my daughter’s summer reading in February when we were at accepted student’s day. Of course she hasn’t opened it yet.

@drmom-may have nothing to do with the school. My D is uber exited about her school and she hardly ever checks her box unless it says housing in the subject line. She could care less about the other deadlines…

@ebon-we’re not international but we had to forward all transcripts from high school and college where credit was received. Even high school credit she got from middle school.

Amazhon/Greekmana…good to know! I was getting nervous that none of the college stuff was going to work out. Okay, glad to know this is probably a normal thing!
I have to admit…I am beginning to like the idea of her leaving…then I won’t have to see the day-to-day procrastination/teenage “whatever”…!!

Re: deadlines… I don’t believe it will affect any of “our” kids on this board, but one student at our DD’s hs did not send the second (of two) deposits and the school promptly sent a letter telling her she lost her spot because they had a waitlist of kids wanting to attend. As a result she is not going to her #1, which had enough students that wanted to go that they had a waitlist. I expect we are beyond that happening at this date, but it’s possible a scholarship has a “write a thank you deadline” or the school has a deadline for filling out the promissory note in order for funds to be released before the start of school, etc. I know “our kids” are almost launched, but don’t let a silly, easily met deadline mess things up at this point…I’m trying to keep on top of it with our DD, making sure she reads emails to the bottom, and following up with things by deadlines :)

Our DD found out last Friday evening who her “luck of the draw” roommate will be and it looks to be a great match! Very similar music, movies, books, etc. likes between them…I think they FB messaged until the wee hours of Saturday morning! That’s another potential stressor that won’t be anymore. Whew! :D

Got a funny letter from the university’s health service yesterday. I thought I was being really proactive getting S2’s health records and immunizations in early. Well, got a letter yesterday saying that apparently the dr listed older sister’s immunization dates on S2’s form. Yep, according to dr, he got his shots 3 years before he was born! I have no idea how the mixup occurred, unless their files got switched years ago because I watched her fill out the form right in front of me. Of course, I didn’t notice the errors either. Double check everything!!!

Graduation is still 2 weeks away. We are in the middle of banquet season. Three this week alone. Tomorrow night is the Senior Awards which should be interesting.

College email: DS gave me his password to check for him when he was away, so I have been checking to make sure he isn’t missing anything. I think he finds out which dorm he is in soon, but I don’t think he will find out his roommate until July.

I have started thinking about about bedding etc… for his dorm room, but he could absolutely care less. I am trying to figure out which is better, the girl who was too picky or the boy who could care less.

Yikes, I had better break into Ds college email set up by the school. I think we can access it from her student website. I can guarantee she has not even gone into the website or the email. She is too busy on the college FB page talking to all the other new freshmen!!! Roommate assignments don’t come until July. She has decided she wants a random assignment.

I did go through the exercise of making her fill out her own Health forms. I felt it was important that she start knowing all the doctor, insurance and immunization stuff. Make sure your kids know where their insurance card is, how it works and what to do. She didn’t even know she had a card or what the name of our insurance company is. Card now in her wallet right next to driver’s license.

I hear y’all. I am so afraid that ds is dropping the ball by not logging in often enough. He has a deadline next week for a competitive orientation program. I started nagging him this week. He discovered that his old e-mail address at the school expired May 31 and he needs to get a new one, which takes at least one business day. Imagine if he’d waited until the day before the deadline??? Argh.

Friday is graduation, but tomorrow night is a pre-graduation ceremony that is my favorite of the year – music, awards, food. It’s a fun event.

I too have purchased plane tickets to take our son to school in August. One way for him, of course. More important than this, I went ahead and purchased the Nov 27-Dec 1 Thanksgiving round trip. The price was still good, but many flights were already sky high. I was pleased with my $218 RT on United, given that Southwest is over $750 for the same dates (there are no discount fares available on Dec 1).

My advice – buy these tickets now if you want to see your kid at Thanksgiving. The dates are not going to change. There’s not as big of a rush for winter break because schools get out at different times, so the travel is not concentrated onto two days. Additionally, until you know the exam schedule, you can’t really book winter break tickets.

S2 spoke at the 6th grade graduation at his old elementary school. I went with him and got to see all of his old teachers. It was really fun. S2 was just amazed at how small everything looked! I guess growing 12 inches will do that to your perspective! I enjoyed seeing all the 6th graders dressed up. The boys’ suits were either too big or too small and most of the girls were teetering on their first pair of heels. So cute! Made me really nostalgic to think how far we’ve come.

My D is barely keeping up with the college stuff because she is still very busy with school work. Finished her last paper tonight and has a presentation of a final project for another class tomorrow. She still has to write a letter to her future advisor describing herself and her interests, and rank the freshman seminar topics. I think she set up her college e-mail to automatically forward to her gmail, which she checks daily.

I had enough Southwest points for free tickets to school in August, and am waiting for my next SW credit card statement to close to have enough points for our return home without her. She won’t be able to make it home for Thanksgiving - too far away for the 4 day break.

Son’s middle school is having a reception on Monday night for the class of 2009. I hope a lot of the kids come. It’s a small private school, so the kids ended up all over the place for high school. It would be great to see them all together again. Teaching at a prep school, I am aware that this sort of thing is part of the school’s development efforts, but I still think it’s nice.
