We also went to BB&B today. We only put four things on the registry. We may not even end up with the stuff if a Target is more convenient. I’ll play surf’s game …

1) Ds1 never used them so we’ll go without for ds2.

Under bed storage box: I think I’ve shared this tip before, but when ds1 and I fly out to move ds2 in, our checked luggage will be Rubbermaid totes. We’ll duct tape them on the plane, and then ds2 will use them for storage under his bed.

Ds is going with one of those five-bulb floor lamps so he can bend one of the heads and use it as a desk lamp. He’ll also take one of those clip-on lamps. He didn’t want one of the floor lamps, but ds1 told him how much he uses his and talked him into it.

Laundry detergent: Ds1 always used liquid.

Shower caddy: You really need one if you don’t have your own bathroom in your suite. We found one at Target for ds1 that wasn’t quite as big and obnoxious as the ones at BB&B. I had a leftover small chrome mesh style thing, as well, that ds1 vetoed for himself three years ago, but ds2 really liked it so he’s taking that.

Yes, boys don’t care about any of that stuff. Get something blue, and you have a 90% chance that he’ll “match” his roomie.

One cool thing about BB&B that I had forgotten about is that they have some school-specific information that I swear is better than any we’ve gotten from the school. For instance, I now know that all dorms are carpeted. In a couple of weeks, when ds gets his room assignment, the info they gave us will really come in handy (bathrooms communal vs. in-room, closet set-up, etc).

We were actually at BBB today also but not really looking at dorm stuff since D will be on gap year instead. We did buy her a lingerie bag for doing laundry in hotels and Laundromats on the road.

Instead we have been stressing out about living from Sept to May, from Florida to Canada from 1 carryon, 2 suitcases and possibly a foot locker - not sure yet if she is going to be allowed that extra piece.

We bought some new leggings/athletic gear for training / rehearsals but what else to bring? D has been trying to ask a couple of people she knows who have done this about what to pack.

According to my oldest D—D’10 (high school)…“don’t pack as much as you think you need…it’s always more than college students use”… --she did/does have underbed plastic box and a couple of stacking egg crates in her closet to help organize her shoes, boots and Laundry/cleaning supplies… if that helps anyone. D’13—she’s waiting till she finds out who her roomate is… but Bryn Mawr also sends out that RHL catalogue (I’ve seen it popping up as an advertisement here on CC as well—) she’s thinking she may want to use that as a guide… At least she is now getting herself “planted”! :)

Drmom123: yeah for planting!!
We had the same experience at BBB with 8 available college lists…pretty cool butane me nostalgic about all the school supply lists at Walmart for the past 12 years. :(

Hi everyone! A quick check-in as we get closer to “launch day.” yikes!

I’ve done some shopping with DD - she won’t know her roommate for a few more weeks and has an early move-in, so no real time to coordinate everything. She picked a pretty neutral comforter (sale bin) that should go with most things.

We had the $7 bed risers in hand yesterday. and D put them back. I think she is waiting to find out which dorm because some of them have a “mid-level” option, some loft/some don’t…

storage - D got a couple of big stand-up tote bags/fabric basket things. I think she’d have been better off with some plastic tubs to stack on top of the closet, but she liked the look of these and felt like she wanted her small space to have some style other than plastic. We’ll see if they work, but were pretty inexpensive if not. They collapse so if she doesn’t want them they can tuck away. She wants a trunk too, but we haven’t done that - pricey and not sure yet…

shower caddy - D has an old one from camp that I am pushing for her to use because it’s not too big. Some of them are just huge! I told her that when I went off to college we all used plastic beach pails for toiletries and poked a hole in the bottom. She rolled her eyes at me.

annie - ha about the plastic beach pails - we did the same thing and there was a mom that painted cute things on them!

Funny about the “style” over the plastic tubs. My dd was trying to decide if it was worth the extra money to get colored tubs to look good or the white ones that are cheaper. She got over $200 worth of Target gift cards so this type of stuff is being purchased at Target and not BBB.

Third kid going off to college. First one was my daughter and we brought way too much! Less is more when it comes to outfitting the dorm room. Boys absolutely don’t coordinate bedding. (second one was a boy) I really don’t think girls do either. My D still laughs about asking her roommate about that. I was going to B,B and B today and then my son said he’d like to come and pick out some of his own stuff. I thought it would be easier to go alone, but I’m glad he’s interested. On our list is inexpensive but comfortable bedding, mattress topper (egg crate type), two towels, desk lamp, dorm safe, risers with an under bed storage bag, three drawer desk top chest (really handy for first aid, extra supplies etc,) and a pop up laundry hamper. We got a really great black mesh shower caddy from amazon. They need an alarm clock even if they plan on using their phone alarm for obvious reasons. It’s really important to have a power strip and one or two extension cords. We also got some adhesive putty tabs to hang up a couple of posters which he’s getting this week at Newbury Comics. Something like Clorox wipes are great to bring and pods are the way to go. Bring a hammer and screwdriver to move in day.

Also, we are bringing a printer. And, we found that the thin wire hangers from the dry cleaner save the most space and it’s not a problem if they don’t come back home with him.

Good morning! It is so nice to see this thread moving again.

S3 could care less about sheets, comforters, etc… I got him a navy blue comforter cover and two pairs of white sheets (he uses benzoyl peroxide occasionally for acne which tends to bleach the sheets so I went with white). I will get him two white towels. I have 2 or 3 sets of bed risers from the first two, but I don’t think he will be able to use them because he is in a triple which is a bunkbed and a loft bed. His birthday is next week so I think I will get him a shower caddie and fill it with stuff. My older daughter had a “cubbie” in the bathroom where she kept her shower caddie and all of it’s stuff. Also have we talked about the velcro towels? According to my daughter they are a “must have” for girls.

How is my D going to get ready to go to college if she keeps taking extra jobs?! Ok - I’m really glad she’s found ways to earn money this summer, but it seems like everyone is coming out of the woodwork and wanting her to video +/or edit their projects. Not only that, but it seems like everyone also wants “just one last visit” with her before she goes. I guess we could just arrange one big open house again or something.

I’m making a hanging organizer for the end of her bed that will velcro around the top rung of the loft bed. We also still need to have her take her drivers test (she’s a late bloomer in that), get her some sort of cc and/or checking acct. or something, figure out what sort of cell phone she’ll need, and do most of her dorm shopping online. We did get a nice 20% off our entire purchase at BB&B coupon in the mail this week. That will be helpful!

Her department is supposed to be working on the schedules for the freshmen this week. I’m excited to see what that will look like. She is able to see that online with the billing info. and has “invited” us to have access to it as well. (So glad for that!)

Are your schools giving you EVERY opportunity to spend more and more money as the start of school approaches? We’ve gotten mailings for a few of things from bedding packages to tuition insurance and now “care packages”. Apparently, according to the flyer, if we don’t buy these, our D will feel “left out”. Sigh I think I’ll take care of my own “care packages”, but thanks.

I agree about the care packages - I will take care of it myself - that way it will be personal and I will enjoy doing it for dd.

YEs - my daughter has always used the velcro towels but her grandmother ordered her a new one - This one will be monogrammed (seems to be the new thing - again (can you say 1980’s!)

Is it a sign of sickness when I get excited that the BB&B 20% off the entire order came in the mail today? I think I am way more excited to shop than my DD. LOL!

Do you think the velcro towels for the shower are necessary if the girls are living in a suite, sharing the bathroom between 4 girls?

We’re waiting for room assignments coming this Wednesday before we get too excited about any more shopping. Cannot seem to get D interested in any of the basic stuff - all she is interested in is giant expensive tapestry things for the walls

@Geogirl1 - I was really excited for the BB&B coupon today also. I just went there yesterday with my D to start looking at things and found out that with the “shop here and pick up there” service (or whatever it’s called), I wouldn’t be paying for anything until I pick up the merchandise at the college BB&B store. I was hoping to be able to use multiple 20% off coupons and spread the cost out over the rest of the summer but quickly realized I wouldn’t be able to do that. At least with the coupon I can now save 20% on everything but will be hit with the cost all at once.

I can’t see that there is a limit on the amount you can take off using the coupon so I’m hoping it works for whatever we want to buy from BB&B other than the items listed as being excluded.

Target seems to be quite a bit cheaper though so we’ll probably buy most of the dorm items there.

okay…I understand PODS, now…But…VELCRO TOWELS??? sounds great…but, I have to admit…I’ve never seen or heard of them! I assume it’s to keep everything from falling off…??? Where does one find such things, or do we make them??? :)

I’m glad I checked into this thread today, I had no idea the BB&B coupon that came today was different. I just put it in with all the others. Now I see that it came in D’s name. We have not begun any shopping yet, but D had her wisdom teeth out last week. We’re last minute people. I have never heard of velcro towels either.

I see my sickness is spreading to fellow CCers! LOL! MSNDIS - I don’t believe there is a limit. We used it last year for DS’12 and it was 20% off everything. The BB&B service is really awesome. They put your order in the warehouse and store it till you pick it up. You don’t pay till you check out at the college location, so if you decide you don’t want something you just put it back. It is also increadibly convenient when everyone is shopping in a college town and your cart is full and you just pay. Saves tons of time!

No Velcro towels for us. Regular towels will work well. Plus the velcro attaches to everything in the wash.
