Parents of the HS Class of 2013

3M also make command strips for poster and picture hanging. I haven’t used them, but the picture strips are like velcro - a piece you stick the wall and a piece you put on the frame.

Not sure about drapes, if there is a recessed window, perhaps a spring-mounted bar. I’m not sure my S’s school allowed drapes. I know fabric hanging from the ceiling was prohibited as a fire hazard.

You can buy 3M stick tack, its grey and comes in a pack with like 4 sticks of it

I used the 3M poster strips to hang posters for S3’s graduation party and they worked great. I remember using other 3M products for D1’s mirror in the dorm and other things.

^But remember to show your student how they work. My boarding school kid had command strips for her hooks but didn’t remember how to remove them at the end of the year and ended up damaging her walls as badly as she would have done with plain old nails.

Just read the Parent Faux Pas Move in thread. I have laughed till tears! I do see a little of myself in there. DD13 and I do intend to wipe down things and disinfect. I grew up with an undiagnosed OCD clean freak Mom. While I’m not as bad as she was/is. I’m bad enough. The problem with flying is that you can’t take cleaning supplies on a plane, so I hope we don’t have problems accessing our send ahead box. I was reading about Walmart runs etc. I don’t think there’s any Walmart/ Target in the heart of NYC, and trying to grab a cab etc to get to such a store will be out of the question.
We found out that the elevator in her dorm is the subject of legend in being slow and not working well. She’s almost on the top of a 15 floor bldg, so transporting her stuff will be tricky.

Tvenee what school? I may be able to help out

surfcity - I am so with you re: boys and room stuff. And there’s a rumor that S13’s dorm has no dressers. Obviously one could find out, but S13 does NOT want me emailing people at his dorm… <sigh>. We’re going to have to get some stuff - we have the really good coupon!!</sigh>

One of S13’s roommates is trying really hard to connect, set up loft purchase, etc. - the rest are not (lol). I told S13 he’s got to make a move soon so I know if we’re buying a fridge.

dadotwoboys - and here we moms thought we already were backed way off ;). You’re right - it just has to work.

I don’t want to buy anything we don’t need since I have no idea who will pay for furnishings - so it’s hard to get excited about BB&B. Yet, I don’t want to buy everything in a day there either. Bleah.

If I don’t buy anything, can he stay home longer?

Except now I totally have to buy him a bath kilt!

tougis - there are several BB&B locations in driving distance of Evanston. Go a little further north or west and you should be fine. Do NOT head south toward downtown and those “other colleges” ;)

S13 got his health form done and I ordered the insurance card, so I guess we’re making progress…

Anyone else on graduation party overload? D has 3 parties this weekend - Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. It seems late to me, almost a month since graduation. But I’m glad she is getting a change to relax and hang out with friends after a busy school year.

thanks for the advice ahsmuoh…must check out the Move-in Faux Pas thread
(DH is going to have an MI)

I am wishing I had done a video on my son (he won’t believe me tomorrow). DS is normally very reserved. The oral surgeon says “he can walk a straight line right now”…immediately upon departure he walks a blue handicap line in the parking lot…stumbling…very outgoing and bubbly…still laughing…

Anniezz - I can picture your shopping experience at BB&B! Thanks for making me laugh.

D and I went there last night (at 8 p.m. and the store closed at 9) to figure out what we wanted to pick up at her college destination. At first, they thought we were there for bridal registry (eek - my D just turned 18!) but we got everything straightened out and ended up with someone who could help with scanning items for college. By the time we got going we only had about 45 minutes and the salesperson “led” us around the store and tried to get us to buy things not on our list while she scanned everything we did want (I would have preferred doing my own scanning). My D didn’t have time to figure out what items she really wanted so we scanned whatever my D thought she might want and I assume quite a few of the things we scanned will remain at the destination store. Of course, the one thing my D really wanted (an over the door mirror) we forgot until we got home so we’ll have to go back and set up another order because they can’t add to existing orders.

Also, it was difficult for me to watch what my D picked out. Navy with white polka dot comforter set (of course, it is excluded from the 20% off coupon), white sheets, white towels, a black storage ottoman, ivory hangers. Very blah but I guess that’s what she likes. The one thing she picked that was colorful (a pink clothes steamer which I have doubts will work very well) was not available at the destination store so we had to change it to white. I hope her roommate likes colors because, if not, their room is going to be very dark.

So . . . our BB&B adventure wasn’t as successful as it could have been but it could have been a lot worse.

Also, we found out that we couldn’t pick the store we want to use at the destination–the system automatically picks the closest store to the school.

MSN, BB&B’s system defaults to the store closest to the school, but that can be overridden!

D13 comes home from life guarding in this code red heat and is too spent to think about what she may need for college. I think we are going to wing it and just wait until we get to campus to pick up a few things. Thankfully the school will offer shuttle rides to Kmart and BBB.

S2 got his class schedule today (didn’t attend summer orientation). He’s very insulted to see that he got placed in “remedial” piano, until he takes the placement test during new student week! And for some reason, he got Italian instead of German (as requested). Oh well, he has to learn both so it really doesn’t matter which one he studies first. Plus, he’s fluent in Spanish, so maybe Italian will be easier. And…he also has an 8am lab class one day a week - that’s going to be a killer!

Happy Friday!

S3 turns 18 on Sunday! He is enjoying his summer job (sailing instructor) and his kids voted him “instructor of the week”. He got his second paycheck, he was a bit appalled at how much money is taken out.

I am contemplating whether or not we have to go to BBB. I know he isn’t interested. I looked at the housing tour online and his room looks VERY,VERY, VERY small. We have his bedding and we are going to take the closet organizers from his closet, a friend gave him a cool laundry bag (in school colors with his name on it). I know he needs a shower caddy (although I kind of like the idea of a sand bucket) and some desk stuff. I took a look at the dorm section when I was at Target the other day and I was not very impressed.

Happy Weekend.

TVenee, I would plan to take the subway. Do you have one of the backpacks that convert to a stroller? If you don’t, borrow one. We had one of the original Kelty ones, and took it to NYC on a trip–it was either DS19 or DD21. I had more parents stop me to look and admire than I could count. Only time I’ve been ahead of the fashion in New York. Have fun! If you have time, Central Park Zoo is charming and the baby will love it.

Anniezz, LOVE your story. So funny. On the downside, I’m pretty sure that I have recycled the 20% off total order B&B coupon. :frowning: Good think DS doesn’t want much.

Jazzi will be dropping her at Columbia.

Eastgrad I keep hearing about these strollers do you have a link? Some NYC Moms have also advised that I bring the baby carrier. What’s the deal with carseats in the city?

TVenee, google Kelty Kids’ Convertible Backpack Stroller. There is one on EBay for 29.99 + about $18 shipping. Lifesaver in NYC. Carseats are hard in the city because there is so much walking after you finish driving your own car or taking a taxi. I’ve never had a problem not having a carseat in a taxi, but you are putting the baby at risk. At the very least, I’d get a very lightweight stroller or a stroller on which you can load the carseat. But then you end up carrying baby and stroller up stairs, which is why the backpack stroller is heaven in New York. It looks like you’re on a full-fledged camping trip in downtown Manhattan, but as I said, the other parents’ admiration made me feel hipper than I’ve ever felt, before or after.

Where’s our NY contingent? Certainly you all can offer better advice than mine…

I would take a carrier bc thethe easier and you don’t have to worry about putting the caraway down or lugging a stroller. I would do subway, it takes longer about 30 minutes but at 2.25$ you can’t beat it. NYC taxis never stop their meter so if you’re sick in traffic you’d be SOL. And car assets aren’t required btw. Look at this website for start put “Columbia” and the address for target is “700 W 116th st. Bronx NY” it’ll help a ton!

[MTA NYCT - Trip Planner+](MTA NYCT - Trip Planner+)

Baby in NYC - the back pack is easiest for the subway, but you might want the stroller too. I would want a folding one, though, because you will have to fold it for the bus. In the subway, If the stroller is light, you can carry it and the kid up and down the stairs (very often someone will volunteer to help, by the way - everyone likes a baby!)

Not sure what to advise on the cabs - it’s been a while since our last baby! - but I see folks using those combo baby-car-seat-that-snaps into a frame with wheels, and that’s probably what I would go with if I wanted to bring only one piece of equipment.

Public transport - To get to Columbia by Subway, look for the 116th street stop on the #1 line (red, west side of Manhattan). During the day, it is approx 15-20 minutes from 42nd street (Times Square) to 116th street by Subway, and anything else will take you much longer. Bus - #104 goes up Broadway, good for shopping trips. #5 is a hidden secret - follows Broadway to 72nd street, then moves to Riverside Drive, with a lovely view of Riverside Park. (We call it the Country Bus). To get from the East side of Manhattan to Columbia, you can either take a cross town bus (96th street, 86th street, 79th street, 67th street) and then take either the 104 bus or the subway uptown. Or you can take the M4 on Madison Ave, which swings across 110th street and then heads up Broadway. Make sure you get the M4, not the M1,2,or3, as those turn north well before Columbia.

You definitely don’t need a car - and parking is a pain in the neck.

For Walmart-style shopping, I would look for the Target in East Harlem at 118th street (there is a bus that goes from Broadway and 106th that ends up on East 116th) and there are some options on 125th street. Going down-town, there are a group of big-box stores at 98th and Columbus Ave, and Bed Bath and Beyond at 65th and Broadway.

One more transport hint - might not be possible coming in, but if you fly your student in and out of Laguardia, the M60 bus is the weapon of choice for getting back and forth to the airport.

Have fun in New YOrk!
