Parents of the HS Class of 2013

EastGrad - I have the coupon but don’t feel like I can use it - S13 “doesn’t need anything, really” and he’s in a single-room quad - we have no idea what anyone else already has <sigh>. I don’t want to buy two things… maybe I take the coupon to campus with us.</sigh>

S13 gave me permission to contact his advisor and ask about placement tests. I have a vague feeling that he ought to do it but I don’t care - I’m calling. At least this way if the answer is no, it’s the mom with that silly idea (that he can take the placement tests because he didn’t score high enough on the AP test for credit - the website says you can’t take the tests if you got credit through AP, but doesn’t address a bad test day…).

Sure feels like the end of summer is sneaking up on us.

Hi everyone! Sorry it’s been a while. I have read & kept up for the most part but haven’t had much time to post.

Today is exactly one month until babygirl flys to college. Wow. I think I’m still in denial deep inside. LOL!

College dorm stuff: um. We have a little stack. Like 2 1/2 suitcases of stuff including all her clothes & shoes. She just got her dorm assignment but we really can’t get much more since her school does this switcheroo dorm exchange & find-your-best-fit thing once they are all there. So, we really can’t bring everything just yet. Amazon Prime will be my friend come September.

TVnee- I found a simple stroller (nice umbrella style) and a baby sling were the easiest for traveling and flying when my kiddos were babies/toddlers. I moved with them and travelled extensively through the US and Europe as a military family and it was a lifesaver. And benadryl on the flight. LOL!! just kidding. I flew from Europe to the US with infants & toddlers and sometimes I wish I had. Lots of Cheerios and nursing them trough takeoff & landing seemed to really help. Good luck & I’m glad you’re going along to drop your D at school!!! good times!

As for BB&B, we never got the 20% off coupon. :frowning: but the good news is that BB&B coupons have an expiration date listed, but you can use them past the date and when they are for one item, you can use multiple coupons … One for each item. So don’t throw your BB&B coupons away!!

D is working as a swim instructor this summer but doesn’t have many hours. She was a little burned out after the end of the school year and hasn’t been incredibly motivated to do much more anyway. This is really the last real break she’ll have for years, so I’m not freaking out.

Hope you’re all doing great! The time is drawing near! Agh!

Thanks so much for all the help. Keep the New York City tips and advice coming!

I’ve been wondering what happens when they return home for the summer and have to transfer the junk back home? As it stands we’ll have to travel lite, but we plan to ship certain items, and no doubt she’ll probably acquire junk during the year.

Any other IB diploma parents out there? D13 had an online session with her College and the question that kept getting asked constantly was about AP credit, but not IB. D13 self studied and took quite a few AP tests, but as an IB candidate, she never took AP classes. Piggy backing on that, have any of your kiddos received the actual diploma yet? One of D13s Facebook friends had a picture of his, but he doesn’t live state side.

Does our group name change when our HS Class of 2013 officially becomes the college class of 2017?

sooooo…any one’s kid getting really cold feet about going to college? I think my DD is. She hasn’t gotten her roomate yet…not for another week or so…I am hoping that will help her out. She’s still disappointed and feeling “dumped” by the other colleges…(which I understand to some extent…but, I really hope she can overcome, so she can learn to love the school she’ll be at)… of course, I am sure she is complaining to me, because I’m MOM…and probably not saying anything to anyone else,…but, I would like to know that I am paying for and taking my kid to a place she will like, enjoy and feel comfortable…right now…not getting that feeling… – although, she’s not liking much of anything these days…

The reality of D leaving is really starting to set in. She just signed and returned contract to her gap year employer and will soon receive travel arrangements for late August. Still waiting on her passport renewal (should come in the next couple of weeks). Starting to figure out what she should pack in her 2 suit cases and 1 backpack for 9 months on the road.

Even this summer she is around much less than we are used to. She has always been busy but this summer she is working 6 or 7 days a week and has been going out every night with friends, which is a change from the past. We are lucky if we see her for an hour or so at dinner (which we are mostly eating at 8:30 p.m. to accommodate her work schedule).

She is extremely excited but admitted to me that she is also a bit terrified - especially for that first plane trip to rehearsal – we’re just going to put her on a plane, no getting her settled in a dorm room, etc.

drmom - my dd went through the cold feet thing about 2 or 3 weeks ago - questioning her decision etc. Once she went to orientation and got her room assignment - she has not stopped talking about “going”!!! I think the roommate assignment will help. We leave to take her in 22 days!

momofzag - wow - what an experience your dd is going to have!!! I bet she will be very happy that she made this choice in the end!

If anyone hasn’t really started their dorm shopping yet, living social has a deal from dormco. 50% off their 44 piece dorm set
https://m.livingsocial.com/cities/1938-us-nationwide/deals/746548-44-piece-college-dorm-essential-set?afsrc=1&utm_campaign=digest_nationalshop&utm_content=1938&utm_medium=email&utm_source=blast</a></p>

Confetti, thanks for the comfort re: my overzealous recycling of the BB&B coupon. Come to think of it, DS probably only has two things to buy. Still…the idea of 20% off everything…and lost forever…oh well, have to move on. :)

TVenee, DS received an IB Diploma. I think the actual diplomas aren’t sent to the high schools until the fall. Our high school holds a ceremony over winter break to induce students to return, talk about their first semester, and receive the actual diploma. It’s a nice tradition. Regarding college credit for IB, it’s only given to students at DS’s college if the student receives a 7…seems like a stringent policy, but I would think that credit at Columbia would be similar.

Momofzag, I hope you’ll keep us updated. I think we’re all excited for your daughter.

No cold feet here yet except mine, drmom. DS leaves four weeks from last Sunday. He saved gift cards and money for two years and purchased his college computer yesterday from the campus store. He can’t wait for it to arrive!

Speaking of gift cards, I noticed a whole stack in S2’s wallet. Some of them are from last year, etc. - Target, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, etc. I told him that he better start using them, but he claims that he doesn’t “need” anything. I guess all my lectures when he was little about the difference between needs and wants really stuck. Now I just have to convince him that he can just “want” something. I think I’ll make him use the Target cards once we arrive to move him into the dorm, for last minute “forgotten” items. And at least he can use Amazon to have things shipped.

Good morning!

S3 got a bunch of gift cards for graduation. I think I will have to steal them and use them for all his dorm set up.

All the gift cards received for grad gifts will go toward buying stuff for college - I told my dd that the Target cards can go toward detergent or toothpaste etc.

S’13 joined the long list of kids getting their wisdom teeth removed this morning. Seems ok now, but swelling is more likely to arrive tomorrow. He’s not happy that most soft, cool foods are sweet - first world problems.

^^dad. Just went thru this. Try mashed potatoes cooled to room temp. It is good to stick with cooler things the first day.

We did the usual jello, pudding, applesauce water ice. But he did have the potatoes with gravy at dinner. By the next day he added in ramen noodles and by the third day he wanted all the normal foods again!

My wife just got D1 a dentist appt to see about possible removal of hers.

Amazing how “ununique” we all are…

We lost our COBRA health insurance earlier this year and now I have bare coverage - no dental insurance. I’m just going to have to be in denial about wisdom teeth this summer until we get dental coverage sometime in the future. Sure hope the dentist doesn’t mention anything about it when she goes in for her checkup before leaving to college.

Wisdom teeth have been on the “to-do” list for a couple years. just never seems like we have time. We have “good” dental insurance and still will have to pay most out of pocket.

coralbrook -

I just noticed that the school’s health insurance policy (Aetna) covers “Dental Expense for Impacted Wisdom Teeth: Covered Medical Expenses for removal of one or more impacted wisdom teeth are payable as follows - 90% of the Actual Charge.” As a result of this, we’re waiting until winter break.

Mira: I looked up DS’s student health dental coverage and although wisdom teeth are covered, there is a $1000 per year maximum, which is the same problem with my plan.

Hello to All :

DS departs for College in exactly 16 days !

A few weeks ago we went through our local BB&B and ordered many things to be picked up across the country. A few days later we got a mailing with a coupon for 20% off everything we decide to purchase at the college location. It is quite a good deal since we pay for the stuff once we pick it up!
IB diploma results are in and I am happy to report DS is a full IB Diploma recipient. No surprises here
He is busy working, trying to make and save as much as he can. And is obsesively thinking about decorating his college dorm  - he got a single, which he is thrilled about.
Any ideas for a dorm room fridge? I am thinking the one with separate freezer will be best.
I believe that his meal plan has 12 meals/week - he will need to learn how to make the best use of it and not to spend a bundle.

Ha, just read a few posts back and saw that the 20% coupon is an old news. And here I thought I am sharing something exciting :(
