It’s been a while. I move in in exactly 3 weeks and I’m SO beyond excited. I would really love to know who my roommate is and where I’ll be dorming, though. UConn still hasn’t let that information out.

Since the summer began I’ve been really busy with work (I work at a pro shop) and making YouTube videos for Her Campus and The Prospect. I wish TP was around in the beginning of my college application process because it’s a really great website ran by college students (we also take on high school interns!) about the college application process. One of my videos for Her Campus was featured in the Huffington Post’s College section and on other websites, and I’m really excited for the other things I’m working on! I interviewed for an video production assistant position for UConn’s athletic department. I have yet to find out if I got it, but if I did then it’s going to be really cool having my first PAID job in the journalism industry. I’ll be doing something that I actually love and th thought of that sounds amazing.

I just thought I’d give you all an update! Also, if anyone is looking for websites their kids can go on to gain more information about applying to college, message me! I know a ton of blogs (including my own…shameless self promotion) and websites that are great tools throughout this process!

Shipping: you also can send something, for example, via FedEx, and have it shipped to a FedEx office near a college and they’ll hold it and then you can pick it up once you arrive in town. I’ve had that done when something big has been shipped to me at home and required a signature.

At my S’s college (entering freshman), we can send stuff to his college mailbox, but it must arrive after he moves into his room, not beforehand.

At my son’s college, they just said wait until August before sending things. I did a test shipment via Amazon of some school supplies and just received my text that they have been delivered. I wanted to make sure there would be no issues with the address before I start having MAJOR things shipped like lamps and a mattress pad. Most of his things will be bought and shipped straight there since he is traveling by plane.

Swizzle, we are so proud of you. Good luck in college. Your enthusiasm is contagious.

I am finding that Amazon with Prime shipping is sometimes cheaper than BB&B, too. The cheapest place for me to find college items is in the basement where my son left his college stuff (he is off in China/Taiwan for this school year). Wonder if the Sudafed and Advil left over is any good?

lol…mom2kids2dogs I just spent about $50 on health items for my son. He looked at me like I was crazy when I was showing and explaining what things are for. All I could think was that I had shown moderation in only buying the 24 pill packs and not the 150 pill bottles.

^ health issues and what to rake are my biggest concern with DS. I know the bottles have the instruction
But that is one thing I still sort of handled for DS at wheh he sbould take motrin vs tylenol or benadyrl
vs some on other cold/cough medicine. I plan on explaining it all to him …I’m sure he will be thrilled.

My older S (will be college senior) still texts me occasionally to ask questions like “I have a sore throat should I take tylenol or ibuprofin?” At least I hear from him!

I’ve been MIA for awhile on this site but popping in as the preparations for launch begin…just catching up on some posts and threads, but wanted to mention an item I never would have thought about on my own as needed by a college student - waterproof spray for their backpacks. Apparently, since kids carry around their laptops and other electronic portable devices, either a backpack water cover or spraying the pack is helpful to avoid expensive damage. A friend pointed this detail out to me and I realized it never was something we needed back in the day because all we lugged around were notebooks and binders…nothing too expensive. Go figure. Still looking for good rain gear like jackets and boots so if anyone’s got tips in that dept…

Hi everyone! Long time no see! Like all of you, we’re getting ready to launch S…at this time in two weeks we will be saying goodbye. i cant believe how quickly this summer went.

We made the big Amazon purchase last night. We’ll mostly just be taking clothes in the luggage (4 checked bags on Southwest.). Everything else we’ll buy locally when we go in a day early.

Adding DD. She has been gone all summer but will meet us next Sunday to move into her dorm. Then we return Monday when she starts band camp. Can’t believe it’s only a week away but very anxious to see her!

You are making me rethink the whole bedding issue - bed bugs ?!
What exactly are bed bug covers? Plastic little things? How can one sleep on a pillow that has plastic under the pillowcase?
We are planing on buying pillows at Costco, DS will take a comforter and a set of linens with him and I will be coming over with the second one. He should be moving into his single a few days before the official move in day, so hopefully we will have time to shop and decorate No needs for a printer on this campus but will be purchasing a microwave and fridge. I am also thinking about an IKEA run to pick up some inexpensive decorations and other “desperately needed items” . Can’t wait to see the campus and his dorm !
We have preordered several things at BB&B but can’t really decide on "what else " until he is able to see his dorm. We already know that it has wooden floors and no AC . Are small rugs practical? DS thinks that one will add warmth and personality to the room. He even wants window covers and pictures on the wall :)

I just realized that I never added my DS to the list.

sahp2kids, we never got rainboots for DS. He does have a basic raincoat and then another coat the has the removable lining for the awful cold & rain, not yet snow, weather. I have no idea what guys wear on their feet so he’ll just have to wait and see and get something when it starts raining. If anyone has tips for guys rainboots, I’d be interested as well.

He just signed up for Amazon for the free 2 day shipping. We were going to wait but heard a rumor that they are going to cut the free trial down to just 90 days instead of 6 months.

Thanks to everyone for posting such good info on this thread! I realized that I forgot to pack up the meds/first aid and even a few basic tools!

Just took DS to get his physical and the dr said to warn ALL the college kids not to take Tylenol for a hangover after drinking (what? my son drink, never!) Dr said it wrecks the liver and no aspirin until over 24 because of Reyes syndrome so I’m just sending DS with Advil. Dr said watch the cold meds as they are usually tylenol based as well but if you are so sick with a cold, probably not drinking. Who knew? Also said to make sure son has “protection”-(what? my son have sex, never!) but I’m adding it to the list just in case.

So what’s in your med/first aid kit? Band-aids, neosporin, advil, cold meds, what else?

Never thought of a tool kit, what’s in yours?

What kinds of food/drinks are you stocking up in the dorm room? DS is on a meal plan but I wanted to stock his fridge with some basic, healthy snacks.

fido - proud to say DS goes to doctors by himself
The best hangover med is Alka Seltzer - even though it contains ASA, it is taken not for a viral ilness so no worries about the Reye’s Syndrome.
DS has had a little toolbox under his bed for a while now, that we are filling in with odd things - rubber bands, scotch tape, some simple tools, duck tape (a must!),simple glu etc. Little things that are around the house and always taken for granted.

Good tips, Kelowna. I would never think of those things like rubber bands. I guess I’ll just raid our junk drawer-lol.

My son would NEVER have gone to the dr… He knew he had to get shots so I practically had to drag/bribe him to go. Spent the last 2 weeks doing all 3 drs-eye, dentist, dr for physical. I was so sure that we had everything covered for sending him 3000 miles away and even did the wisdom teeth last winter break. Imagine my surprise when dr told me DS’s tonsils were enlarged-what?! He has only been sick 2 days of the last 4 years of high school. I didn’t know they still took out tonsils. I hope this isn’t what we’ll be doing over winter break (shudders!)

you know, with all this talk…even though my DD is not coming home for another two weeks, I am thinking that I can start the “tool box” and “first aid kit” without her. Its the “decorating stuff” that she will want to be deciding anyway! Thanks! I’m off to shop for the “necesary items!”

I included a thermometer in his first aid kit - I never use them but he likes asking “Do I have a fever?” Ibuprofen, Neosporin, bandaids, tweezers, ace bandage, benadryl. A couple items because he’s a singer - Throat Coat and a neti pot. But I have to remind him to use distilled water for the neti pot.

Didn’t do a tool kit because the kid wouldn’t know what to do with a tool. Hoping he has a handy roommate.

anyone actually have experience with those “no-mess-with the walls” hooks? I forget what you actually call them…but they claim to hold lots of heavy things, but not ruin the walls???
