Parents of the HS Class of 2013

Command strips/hooks. They do work but you have to remember how to remove them at the end of the year (pull down on the tab to release them). If you try to pull them off the wall they’ll damage it at least as badly as a regular screw/nail in hook would.

[Command? - Damage-Free Hanging Solutions](http://www.command.com/wps/portal/3M/en_US/NACommand/?WT.mc_id=www.command.com&WT.ctod=15:59)

Summer is just whizzing by!! We have 3 weeks before move-in. Just taking stuff in the suitcases and everything else will be shipped. DS received his housing/roommate so we shall see how that goes. Hope move-in goes smoothly for everyone!

And yes, be careful with the command strips. If you don’t remove them correctly, it will strip the paint off the wall.

okay…so, I’ll buy “some” and see how it goes…
also, I am planning to buy a file for DD so she has a place to begin putting her important papers…bank statements…passport…those kind of things…anyone have ideas about that? Do you think it has to be a “real” box, with a lock…??

Good morning! Yikes time is going fast!!!

S3 finished his summer job on Friday, so is enjoying summer with his friends now. S3 has always had a lot of different friends, but because they weren’t playing the same sports and weren’t in a lot of the same classes, he hasn’t spent a lot of time with his elementary school friends the last couple of years, but all of a sudden this summer they have re-connected. It is kind of fun to see. We leave Saturday for a 10 day vacation, then he will be home 4 or 5 days, and then he moves in!!! CRAZY!!!

First-aid kit: I am a pharmacist. For D1’s boyfriend, as a graduation present, I made him a first-aid kit and sent him a list of what to take when. I think I even included an article I found online written by a pediatrician. Funny that I didn’t do the same for my own kids, but of course they can always call me. The others just took ibuprofen, Sudafed (pseudoephedrine) and a cough-suppresant (my favorite is Delsym). D1 never went to student health in her 4 years in college. S2 had found himself there multiple times.

DD (The third and last) goes straight from Fish Camp into the dorm for Gig 'Em week - so her launching is imminent and looming!

Launch date fast approaching! We moved “Dorm Mountain” out of the back room and into the dining room so we could really “see” what we have. Then we went out and added a few more “must haves” to the mountain:) Just need to get extension cords cleaning supplies (Read a case of Clorox wipes!) and he is all set!!
It is kind of strange but I have welled up sooo many times over the last year about his graduation and heading off to college. He is REALLY ready and that makes me READY. I am sure I will still need my sunglasses at drop off day but I can now have a full conversation about the him going off to school without feeling sad!! Yay me!! :)

drmom - about safes - my oldest shared a room with 4 other girls and I was sure there would be a lot of traffic in that room, so she had a small safe with a strap that would go around a bed leg. I have not done that with the other 2 who only had one room mate. They put their passports, emergency credit card, SS card, and checkbook in the bottom of an underbed storage box. None of them get paper bank statements though. I think dorm theft is a crime of opportunity, things left lying around. (Unless you suspect roommate would go through her stuff when she’s not there.)

Reorganized:

Hello All!

My D is graduating this year (2014), but I would love to see where everyone got accepted and where they are going for the 2013 year. Is there a specific link for that? I did a quick search, but it is mostly divided into specific colleges. Please LMK, thanks!

There is a thread stuck near the top of the Parents’ Forum with all the acceptances. For a list of attending you will have to find the May postings in this thread. (around post # 24,450!)

I’m glad the bedbug search turned up empty for me…

megpmom, I cannot imagine selling a house and moving while launching… my hat’s off to you!

S13 is housesitting/dogsitting across town this week. Although I see him every day, I miss him. And I’m kinda irritated to have “lost” this week.

No advice on flying stuff, except have your S check out the Facebook groups for other class years as well as his own. I saw on some that Juniors post stuff (books, etc.) for sale on the Sophomore class FB, etc. There might be some conversation about getting cheap stuff – I’ve heard graduates sometimes wait until move-in to sell stuff.

tx5 - my goodness, didn’t he just start that job a few days ago? Can the summer have gone already? I’m so glad he enjoyed it!

3Triplet - I’m right there with you. My mom was saying the other day that I need to rest and spend some time on myself, and I thought that sounded so sad…

Re: “first aid kit” - For D15 I put together a shoe box, with band-aids and disinfectant, etc., but also meds. I wrote in sharpie on all of them “Runny nose only” - “Cold with cough” - “take for sneezy allergies only at bedtime”… I’m doing the same thing for S13.

Great tip on waterproof backpack!

lol fido - we had the protection conversation, too. I’ve been assured (by DH) that everything’s covered (so to speak).

Also in the shoe box: Pepto-Bismal tabs, cough drops, menthol rub like Vicks, two neck-sized heat pads, two cold packs (but I think S13 will get a reusable one), 3-4 chicken bouillon cubes, 3-4 mint tea bags, aloe vera gel, burn cream, hydrocortizone, antibiotic ointment, carmex, kanka/anbesol, A&D, a few large gauze pads and tape. Perhaps vitamins??? Nah, even I can’t kid myself that much!

Congrats sophieadlola! I hope to get there but now I’m still tearing up…

Here’s some music that fits my mood tonight (warning: may cause tearing up):

[Miley Cyrus and Billy Ray Cyrus - Ready, Set, Don’t Go Live Kids Inaugural 2009 - YouTube](<a href=“- YouTube”>- YouTube)

I still don’t know who I’m rooming with or where, but I’m really looking forward to moving in!

D1 got her roommate! We did a little sniffing around the web (stalking?) and discovered that she’s from L.A. and was valedictorian of her big magnet school.

Uh-oh.

One good thing is that she’s going into the Medill journalism school and D1 isn’t, so there won’t be any competition on that front…(D1 doesn’t care to write anything true.)

Thank you, mamabear!

Not ready! Not packed! Hopefully buying bulky items when we arrive!

I drop DS off tomorrow and he still hasn’t got all his clothes/stuff packed. Ugh…

My son is a senior in college and I asked what were the most important items that I sent with him for his freshman year.

 1. First aid kit…(bandaids, basic cold meds, vicks vapour rub, advil, lip balm, …etc) invaluable…he said it kept him from going to the clinic or pharmacy for little things during cold season and the inevitable cuts and bruises from the weekend…flag football, stumbling out of a party, etc.
 2. Clip on personal fan – no airconditioning plus brutally hot 3 weeks of school…clipped onto his top bunk where the air from the window fan did not reach.
 3. Letter from his father…the one and only written letter from his father with advice and our expectations (we kept it simple–no piercings or tattoos, no babies) He says he still has it and that his father needs to give a similar letter to his sister.

The rest of the stuff was either unused, damaged beyond hope for reuse or lost. So sophomore year he went with a much reduced set of items but always a refilled first aid kit.

MichiganGeorgia You seem so calm ;)

DS13a had “the conversation” with the GF. We are all sad but they are wise beyond their years. He will drive her and her mom to the airport when she leaves on Sunday and then it’s over. Let the waterworks begin.
