Parents of the HS Class of 2013

My 2014S didn’t take the AMC10 offered at his school on Tuesday, and I have been trying to find a nearby school he can go to to sit for it on Feb. 22. I posted it on the Parents of HS 2014 thread, and a member of that thread directed me to AMC’s website page showing locations of higher education sites where they are offering the AMC. It’s at: [Additional Locations for the AMC 10B/12B at Higher Education Sites](<a href=“American Mathematics Competitions | Mathematical Association of America”>American Mathematics Competitions | Mathematical Association of America).

If your student is a high achiever in math and your school doesn’t offer the AMC, you might want to see about taking it at a college/university near you. I think high school juniors can take the AMC12 on February 22. The AMC website explains what the AMC is all about. Students who receive top scores on the AMC 10 and 12 are eligible for the AIME and the AMSO. DrGoogle, if your daughter is in the top 5% for the AMC12, she is eligible for the AIME, which should be offered to her at school in March. Kudos to her!!

Yes, Kudos to DrGoogle’s D. D brought a copy home (is that legal?) Anyway, that test is insanely difficult, and I can see it would identify a special talent for math and problem solving.

While D manages to almost always get A’s or B+'s in math, I certainly wouldn’t say she’s one of the top math students. I think she said she finished 10 problems, her other friend only finished 8 or 9 and her mathy friend only finished 12. It sounds ridiculously hard which I’m thankful for, for our truly high achieving math students. There is no reason why D2 should have been taking it.

Anyone else taking the ACTs this Saturday?

RobD–our son is a strong math student and our dd is a very good math student, but I though the posted talking about this to start was at the movie theater :). Now that I know what they are talking about, DD’s old boyfriend scored the highest score in our state last year on this test, the 12th grade test last year…as a freshman in high school. THAT is the example of a top math student. He has finished all of the “high school” math classes and is taking classes at the university now. I still add on my fingers…

I find any math that can’t be done on an excel spreadsheet an unwelcome challenge, but I don’t think my son has ever seen a difficult math problem he doesn’t want to solve. So, I’m hoping I can find a site for him to take the AMC10.

No ACT test takers here this weekend. Our kids school specifically sets up the curriculum for the kids to take the April test, along with the week or two before the test hitting test strategies, etc. hard. They took practice tests last week in prep for the April test though. The teachers discourage the kids from taking an earlier test, which is fine.

RobD: S3 is taking the ACT on Saturday! He says he is studying, although I have not seen him.

This must have been the math test S’13 took this week. Said he finished 14 questions and the rest were so hard he didn’t even bother. He’s a pretty good math kid, but this must be one hard test.

He and DW are in the air right now heading to Chicago. it’s 28 degrees and snow is called for tomorrow. Perfect. He’s actually very excited for it to snow. But, I think he is most excited to go see a taping of “Wait, Wait…Don’t Tell Me!” tonight. That’s what I am jealoous about.

dad, jealous of your ds, too. I love that show.

No math tests here or ACT, though his school is having a practice ACT in a few weeks. Depending on his SAT score, he may sign up for that and give the ACT a whirl.

This week, ds has been uber-motivated academically. Like Haley’s Comet, it’s rare and fleeting so enjoy it while you can. I think seeing that bump in his ranking and knowing that his poor BC Cal score could erase all of that has gotten him going. And the upcoming college visits has him focused on the big picture.

I am working on the spring break college visit thing. We almost decided not to when we found out S’13 has to be back in the state by the Th of spring break week (to compete in a statewide French competition, something more important than college visits and that he wants to do). So, we are opting for the “if it is Tuesday this must be Belgium” approach to the northern mid-Atlantic states. We want to take on one college a day (no more, but no fewer). So we are going to book a central hotel, fly in nearby and radiate out over 5 days (at least we will sleep in the same place this way). This may be our last college visit trip depending on how summer plans develop (except an in-state day trip or two).

dadotwoboys – I’d suggest some drive-bys in addition to your 1 school a day. Many schools in the NE are clumped together. My son is very picky about the boundaries of a campus and ease of getting to a store. Drive by without actual tour visits sufficed for some schools for him.

ACT for my son Saturday.

He has 2 books. He has not even pretended to crack open the spines.

I was freaking a bit last night when I realized the school he is taking it at was divided into 2 campuses. Last thing I want is to get lost Sat morning. Luckily, I know a student there who I was able to FB last night. She gave me the type of directions I need… Stand at Burger King, look left type of thing. I do much better with land marks :)

One school he likes requires ACT or 2 subject tests. Hoping he’ll do well enough that we can bypass the subject tests.

He is at a regional Poetry competition today. How do I know this? He forgot to get a permission slip & the teacher had to call me. I wish he were proud of his accomplishments. I knew he “won” class level due to a parent at another school! No idea he progressed past his school.

Loughaul–if he is anything like my boys it isn’t that he isn’t proud, he is just a boy and probably didn’t think he should tell his parents this :). It’s a good thing we have a DD in the same school or we would know NOTHING.

No ACT here. I don’t even think there is one offered in my state this month. NY is pretty SAT focused and many kids never even take ACT. Depending on Ds SAT in March, she may take the ACT. Very jealous of the schools that prep the kids. None of that here.

Congrats to your S longhaul!

Here in OH kids usually take both the SAT and ACT. My s ('12) took both and did MUCH better on the ACT, so that is what we used. Sometimes kids do better on one than the other, if the colleges you are considering take either/both, I think it’s worth taking a look.

Re: mailings. We’ve been only getting 1 -2 a day but it’s entertaining to see from where. Today’s totally unfounded moment of mom pride came when a mailing from CalTech appeared in the mailbox. Yes, I know they cast a wide net. And I know he has no chance of getting in–the sweet boy has never set foot in any math or science EC or camp (unless you count dinosaur camp the summer after first grade). And even if in some alternate universe of admissions it were possible, I can’t get him to think about schools outside Manhattan, forget leaving the state. But I still had a treat of irrational mom pride for the day and figured you all would understand.

Momof - I totally understand. My unfounded moment of pride. His moment of eye roll and feeling sorry for poor old dad. Oh well.

Out of total curiosity, a piece of mail arrived yesterday from some school way out there in remotest CA. Only 26 students per class, 30 miles from the nearest town, self-governance and manual labor, and only 2 years before the kids transfer to another school. What is this place? I never heard of anything like it.

Dadoftwoboys, are you talking about Deep Springs? If so, it’s an extremely selective, well regarded school. Beides being male only, it certainly isn’t for everyone.

I believe Deep Springs is going co-ed. Most students transfer to Ivy’s.

I actually know a kid who got in – brilliant guy – but his parents wouldn’t let him go. I remember a thread about this place a couple of years ago.

S13 is opting to take the ACT now in April. He has an “all comer’s meet” for Track and will be running there instead. I think it was TX5 who suggested that focusing on his times might be the key for him this year…I think you are right :)

2 of the College Coaches he has been talking to have said that his transcripts and SAT are good, but would like to have a good ACT in the bag just in case.

Leaving in the AM for Florida, D14 is competing in the HS Cheer Nationals. Would love to have some good vibes on Sat if possible  A Coach that is looking at recruiting her will be there and I know she is looking to have a strong performance.

Have a great weekend everyone!!
