Deep Springs. That’s the one. Sent a letter yesterday. S’13 took one look, said it sounded like “holes” for college kids and recycled. I was curious what it was, but clearly not going to be on his list, which is fine by me. Very far from home and very hard to get to.

MDMom - good luck to D14. Near the beach? Or is it Orlando? Either way, hope it goes well and you enjoy.

I like that description, “holes” for college kids. My reaction to your description above had been “sounds awful”!
Some cheerleaders from our area heading to Florida too this weekend. Good luck to your D, MDMom. It never occurred to me there would be recruiting for cheerleading.

Oh Dadotwoboys: our spring break trip involves a school a day as well and it is very much “It it’s Tuesday it must be Belgium…and a flight (or train trip)” Plus I’m trying to fit in one Food Network or Man v. Food stop in each town. You know, for fun ;)

MDMOM: Good luck at Nationals! That stuff is hard core.

D couldn’t take the April ACT as there’s a conflict with one of her EC’s. They take it in school without writing in March but she needs one with writing. And by June she wants to be done. So Saturday it is.

RobD - I’m partial to Diners, Drive-ins and Dives, but am right there with you on that. My family seems to move from meal-to-meal when we are on vacation. Iit’s how we discuss past trips “Remember the ribs in Memphis or the dim sum in NY?” Good luck on your trip.

We had a Junior College Night last night with guidance walking us through the process. Our guidance is very overworked so we believe we will only be able to rely on them for coordinating the paperwork, not for the selection process.

D has an exchange opportunity next year in the fall to South America. I have mixed feelings on this. My primary concern is that it is in the middle of application season, soccer season, and it may impact her ability to take the October SAT. Also, if she is news editor and student council pres next year, it seems like a LOT to miss. Those of you who have been through this before, what are your thoughts?

nellieh: What a great opportunity! I haven’t dealt with this but this is what I’d ask: How long would it last? I’d want her to talk to the teacher in charge of SC & newspaper and soccer to see how her being gone would affect the activity since she’s in a major leadership position. Does the exchange happen during a time when there’s a big event run by the SC or that the newspaper has to cover (like Homecoming?)

I wouldn’t worry so much about the October SAT as she has time to get them out of the way before senior year ever starts. Today’s the last day to register for March 10, but there’s also a May 5 & June 2nd date (will she need SAT II’s?) I don’t see dates yet for the fall.

As for application season, the common app is up around July 1st so there’s no reason she couldn’t have her apps done before she leaves.

South America…great opportunity. There is no problem in taking the SAT test abroad. Most countries have several testing centers in big cities. WIll she be going to an international school? Check on the college board website for the are international testing centers for taking the SAT (and ACT) on the same test dates as in the US. Also, if she attends an international school or a school for the wealthy (AKA where kids are sent abroad for college) she will have counselors who can help with the college application process. My kids attended international schools on and off and the US college application system was well-understood. Many of our friends and relatives from Ecuador send their kids to US and European universities. Not all attended international schools but they took SATs, ACTs, TOEFL and AP and IB exams just like my kids. Fun to see them complaining to their cousins on Facebook about the same ridiculous spanish IB essay.

Thanks folks. She is only going to be on exchange for a couple weeks. A mini program type thing. We are still waiting for some details from the teacher. I am such a planner that the thought of throwing one more think in the “to do” pile for that month can be overwhelming.

Oh yes. Good luck to the ACT testers and MDMom’s D!!

RobD and any other parent that might have a kid who writes, Champlain College is having a young writers conference May 25-27. The application deadline is soon, 2/15 but no recs or transcripts are required. Just a short writing sample.

Hi, from a newbie in South Carolina. As you can tell from my member name, D is a dancer. She attends a residential arts HS and we are beginning to feel overwhelmed with this college search! We had hoped to make some college visits over her spring break, but most schools she wants to look at have break at the same time! grrrr She just had hip surgery a month ago, missed a week of school for that, then had the stomach flu the next week and missed two more days. So we really don’t want to have to pull her out of school for visits, but at the same time, we feel we need to see the schools in session, particularly so she can get a feel for the ballet classes. What to do?

We are doing some visits over colleges spring break time because we can. If you know that going into it, just accept that there won’t be any kids or many kids on campus. You can still learn about the school, specific programs they offer, etc. The big drawback, and maybe not an issue, might be that if she wants to talk with the dance instructors (or whatever specific program) they might not be available but you can always call them later. One coach DD wants to speak with won’t be there, we know that, he wants us to come back later (and it is close enough that we can). If it wasn’t, they would connect later–within NCAA guidelines of course.

Good luck, ACTers! I guess the SAT kids will find out how they did next week.

Ds had two killer tests yesterday. The APUSH test ended up with a 23-point curve to get the class avg to a 76! DS felt like he aced one part of the BC Cal test and, eh, not so much on the second part.

He’s at a recertification clinic today for refereeing. Not terribly fun. And dh and I are off to do our taxes and FAFSA in a minute. REALLY not fun.

Good morning! Dropped S3 off at the ACT’s this morning. If it were at our school he would have driven, but since it was at another school, we didn’t want the added stress of him now knowing where he was going so I dropped him off and will pick him up at 1pm. I was having a discussion with a friend last night about SAT subject tests. She was under the impression that they were not needed any more. And referenced this article: [Era Ends for 3 Subject Test Requirements | Inside Higher Ed](http://www.insidehighered.com/news/2010/08/09/subject#ixzz1m298poz5) . I know that the UC’s no longer require them as of this year. Any thoughts?

My daugher signed up for SAT subjet tests in May and June. Hopefully she does not have to retake her SAT. I just want to keep all options opened for her, UCs are on her list but they are not the only ones.
