MomofNEA, here is a list (a few years old) of colleges that require/recommend the SAT II tests. There is an asterisk for those that will take the ACT with writing instead. You should always check the school’s website to make sure nothing has changed. Like DrGoogle said, there are some other schools, like Carnegie Mellon that require them for engineering also.

Longhaul, your post made me laugh aloud. At least your kid is on the road to decision making in some form or fashion!

I can’t decide if my D is methodical or just wants to ge the whole thing over with. I’m fearing it’s the latter!

Longhaul: Memphis may get snow today so keep any news of that out of your house :)

Good morning! S3 took the ACT on Saturday. He said it went well. Although that is the kind of guy he is, the glass is always half full. He thought he did really well on the sentence restructuring (?) but found the reading painful. The essay topic was something like should restaurants be required to put nutrition labeling on their menus. He had just written an article for the school newspaper on childhood obesity which made it a little easier. S2 evidently got exactly the same (percentile wise) on the ACT and SAT, so it will be interesting to see how S3 does. Thanks for all the information on the SAT II’s. Sounds like, particularly if you are going into engineering, that it is worthwhile to take them. Of course S3 has no idea what he wants to do, At this point, the plan is for him to take the SAT again (unless he aced the ACT) in May and 2 or 3 SAT II’s (Math2, Bio & US history) in June to keep his options open.

Tx5, Is he taking any AP courses? I hear that it makes sense to take to corresponding SATII for any AP test that he might take. I’m still trying to decide if my kid will take SATIIs. So far, none of the colleges on his list require them but I’m on the fence about having him take them just in case. I’d rather he not need the scores than have to rush to take a test or cut a school from the list because he didn’t take them.

reeinaz: He is taking AP Bio, AP US & trig/precalc now so that is why we are thinking about taking the bio, US history and Math 2.

tx5 - My kid is doing the opposite - May for SAT II because it corresponds to AP exam week and he doesn’t want to study for SAT II. If need be, SAT again in June or early fall.

I’m hoping for great ACT scores and to forego SAT II. He took the Math II last year and it was not pretty.

reeinaz – I was pretty insistent about son taking SAT II after seeing me niece decide in late fall of senior year that there were a few more schools she wanted to add only to discover no time for SAT II. I’m a big believer in keeping all options open. My son is not.

If your son is resistant, it may not be worth the fight. So few schools require the SAT II. Of course, many of these are the same schools who are FA generous.

In the end, my niece said she didn’t really want the SAT II schools anyway. She just paniced because her friends were applying to more schools and she felt she needed to shove some more out.

Longhaul: Hmmm, good idea, maybe then we will do SAT II’s in May and SAT in June (when with his AP tests over, he won’t have much else to study).

My S refused to apply anywhere that required SAT II’s. My D’s found that the AP US History and SAT II tests corresponded really well. Be prepared for the Math II percentages though. Kids taking it tend to do well, so a high score could be a not so high percentage (i.e. a 740 last year was 72nd percentile)

D’13 took the ACT on Sat and she thought it went well, since it was her first time I think that she will probably retake it in June which will leave her the opportunity to retake it once more in the fall if need be.

D won’t be taking any SAT IIs as none of the schools she wants to attend require them.

Headed to Stetson U next Monday for an open house, then a few more visits the end of March. It is hard because D doesn’t have many requirements and the only ones she has ruled out are App State (too small, no marine bio)and Emory (Atlanta is too big) . I think most schools won’t get scratched off the her list until we know what kind of scholarships she receives and even then I think she will be happy with any College on her list, but all for different reasons.

I think D only has about 14 weeks of Jr yr left! I have mixed emotions, I want the stress of this year to be over but I know the following yr is going to be difficult emotionally!

Thanks, Mamabear (though I can’t see the link–perhaps it got edited out? In any case I did a search and found a document that doesn’t sound as thorough but has sufficed to convince me that he needs to one more SAT II). And thanks for the corroboration re APUSH and SAT II. I am definitely planning to push this plan with S. Next week…

Longsx3 - don’t know much about Stetson, but I was near campus a few weeks ago for a meeting and it seemed very pretty - lots of spanish moss. I also had lunch in downtown DeLand and it is very cute. Should be a good visit.

S’13 took SAT II’s last June. He took the World History and AP World tests within a few weeks of each other and said that helped. He also took Math II after finishing pre-calc/trig. Same thing.

DW and S were in Chicago last weekend. It was cold and snowy - perfect. He liked the city. Liked Northwestern a lot. Loved the snow (which he had never seen fall before). And loved U. of Chicago. Even took the time to take an interview on campus. A very good weekend all around. Thanks for the input you all gave.

Sorry! I probably just forgot to add the link for SAT II test-requiring schools -

Happy Valentine’s Day!!! Hope everyone has wonderful plans with loved ones. H and I are going to the symphony for a combined Valentine’s/birthday (his) celebration. And yesterday, one of my former foster sons brought me a box of homemade truffles! He is such a neat kid and is really succeeding despite many obstacles. Just seeing him again made my day!!!

Thanks again, Mamabear. Your list is better than the one I found! Starting to get a little nervous here for SAT scores…trying to keep my head on straight re S’s strengths and limitations so I don’t end up feeling disappointed. Going to head over to SAT thread now and figure out exactly when scores come out. Good luck to all if I don’t get back here before then!

The SAT score will come out tomorrow. Probably need to look early in the morning. I’m really nervous to see what the result is. This is my S’s 2nd SAT. His goal is over 2300. I don’t know if he can reach it. If not, do you think he could take the 3rd SAT or take ACT?

I’m not nervous for tomorrow’s result, but I can’t tell you how much I would love it for him to be done at one. He set a goal for himself that I think was a bit low so we’ll see whether he makes it. If he doesn’t, I told him he’d need to do the practice ACT his school is offering just to see if it would be a better fit. Then, he’d take one or the other, depending on how the practice ACT score correlates to the SAT score.

pigmom, what was his first SAT score?

Thank you everyone for the well wishes for Cheer Nationals ![]()
D14’s team placed 4th in a VERY tough division, so we are very proud.
Lots of College Coaches on hand, a few of our boys were offered spots at some top Cheer schools for their recruiting weekends. BTW…this is the easiest way for a boy to earn a full ride scholarship ![]()
D14’s dream school to compete at is Univ of Oregon and the Acro Coach that has been following her was there
So it was a good weekend…

Will catch up on the posts from the past few days…hoping everyone had a successful ACT weekend!!!

Here’s hoping the SAT kids get the scores they hope for and deserve.

pigmom - I am with youdon’tsay in putting the whole question in the context of what your son’s first SAT scores were and how they relate to each other and to the schools he is interested in. If the two sets of scores are similar, is there any reason to believe a third sitting will make a difference? Perhaps the ACT, being a different test, would be a better approach. But only if your son really needs higher scores to get into the schools he is intersted in. Where do the scores fall relative to the range of scores for kids going to the schools your son is interested in? If the superscore is already at the 75th percentile or above, does he need better to get in? Are you looking for merit aid? That could make a difference in deciding to take a test again and which one.

Lots to think about on such a simple question. For my part, S’13 gets scores tomorrow (the 2nd set of scores) and I am hoping we would be done with testing. We’ll see.

I’ll chime in and wish all our kids and families good luck on the SAT scores tomorrow. Seems like several of our kids are in the same boat. I know I am excited to find out. My S had his first meeting with his GC this week and was given a preliminary list of 16 schools, so with that and the SAT scores tomorrow, things are quite real suddenly!
