Yea!!! D got a 29 also…I’m so happy for her…her SAT scores were 1780…both include the writing… So according to one chart this would be a 1920 sat…is this true?..

Congrats on the scores!

@reeinaz Here is a link to the ACT/SAT Concordance Table

[The ACT | ACT-SAT Concordance | ACT](The ACT Test for Students | ACT)

Thank you learninginprog…
these scores baffle me…and my poor kid gets so nervous taking them…this was her first time so I’m hoping with practice she can get them up…even one point…it may help with scholarships…she needs everyone she can get…

Sacchi…Looks like we have 2 peas in the same pot…our D’s outlook for schools changed and I feel so much better for her…
It’s sad when you have a really smart kid who doesn’t test well.
Mine now is in the lower tier for acceptance for her dream school, 3 reaches and good standing for 3safety (one of which is a Great State school)…and she is retaking in June…she feels so much better…
She did horrible on the SAT and I agree the ACT is a great option…
So Those of you out there with not so great SAT…Try ACT…

Great scores everyone!!!

Went to one of those college roadshows yesterday with Brown, Rice, Columbia, Cornell and U of Chicago. I felt weird going by myself, but DD was at an all day practice session at school held by AP teachers for English and Psych. To be fair, she has been before a few years ago with her brother. I think hearing their pitches again only solidified her list more. I can’t wait until August when she does her application and we officially start this process.

Congrats on all the great scores! Y’all are making me wish we’d looked at the ACT. But, really, his SAT is great, so I must snap out of it. ;)

lacrosse, we’re going to that one this week, too. We went last year, but now that he’s got a more discerning eye, I want him to go again.

PAMom, what’s different? You’re dealing with a boy this time! ;)

Ds and I went over his resume and list in preparation for our meeting with the GC today. He’s feeling really good about it all. We also talked about the summer program he’s going to, and he’s getting excited about that as well. Actually, he’s excited about the prom and just about everything right now. It’s a great feeling.
Now, if only he’d study for those AP and subject tests … oh, well. You can’t have everything.

Good morning! Congratulations on the ACT results!

It looks like the June SAT is back on the table for DD - she couldn’t make all the practices (for the conflicting tournament) work with her schedule so she decided to sit this one out.
So, now I’m still wondering if it makes sense to take the SAT and ACT back to back (a week apart.)
DD says she would rather try it, and then she’ll know where she’s at.

PAmom3210, welcome! I think many of us here are looking for that smaller school for our kids, so you have lots of good company. :)

reeinaz, I was looking at Champlain this past weekend and I thought of your DS - am I remembering his interests correctly? Seems like a great school and Burlington is such a nice college town.

Have a great week!

Hey, lacrosse mom, I was there too, with D. She was the most excited about Rice, which I was sure had her major. We then came home and found it really does not have her major, according to their website. She is carefully reading the description of the major at each school on her list to see if it encompasses what she wants.

I definitely thought it was worth it to go to the session. There is another one coming up on a week-night, and D has signed up for that.

32 for one, 28 for the other. S needed over a 30 for one school admissions and a 30 or better for top merit at his other schools so we are good to go there!! D is fine for admissions but needs to superscore to a 30 for merit so she will need to retake. We did sign up to get their answers back so she can study for the areas where she needs the most help. S got the same subscore for each section–hopefully that will be a “hook” at his highly selective choice :D.

learninginprog, thanks for that link. Guess I’m happy

His writing score wasn’t reported yet. It will probably take 3 weeks for them to decipher his chicken scratch. I told S his score and he wasn’t very happy. I just don’t think he understands the scoring. He was focused on 28 out of 36 lol. I told him to go and talk with his counselor at school about it and see what she says. He’s already scheduled for the SAT on Saturday. After that, he’s done with testing.

anniezz, yep you are remembering his interests correctly. He’s actually going to be at Champlain over Memorial Day weekend for their writing conference. It’s definitely a school he’ll apply to even though I doubt he’ll get enough FA to attend. I’m really liking the techy, creative, entrepreneurial type schools for him.

Geography…

Is there a way to find out if where you live will help you in terms of admission (given all other variables like ACT, GPA and ECs are good) to any particular schools? Just curious.

reeinaz-tell him that that 28 puts him in the top 6% of all students taking the ACT, maybe that will help? A 28 will qualify him for merit aid at every school we’ve looked at that gives merit aid (along with an acceptable GPA).

walker–that really depends on each school. Some schools are really trying to attract out of state students so if your child is considering one of those, good chance there. For some schools, they can only admit so many out of state students so that hinders your acceptance chances.

Dears,

congratulations to all ACT scores!!

I have become adicted to CC and check it so often in a day. Also, i must admit, all this stress, i am eating more than usual and today morning when i put my clothes on, I realized, i will have to go shopping soon if I don’t control my stress level…lol…I am going to gym for sure today!!

SteveMA…so a 29 might qualify for merit aid?..I’m not familiar on how to see if the schools D is looking at, give merit aid…could you please send a link or explain it further…I’m new to this and she is going to need anything she can get…I really don’t want her to be in debt till she’s 60…lol

SteveMA is correct about a 29. My DD13b got a 27 (no studying) and is going to retake to try for a 29 or 30 to make merit money easier to get.

Walker, I think geography is going to help you more (exception to follow) at private schools, which like to brag that it has kids from all over the country/world. I look at ds1’s school. It does profiles of 10 kids who are in that year’s incoming class. It can’t be a coincidence that for three years running it’s profiled a kid from Texas. The school wants kids from the South to know that a MN school really is an option for them.

Geography is less important at public unis, which, in theory have the mission to serve their in-state taxpayers. In fact, some have quotas and such to ensure the in-state kids get preferential treatment. And now, the exception: It seems to me that the Cali unis are looking heavily at OOS kids because of the OOS tuition.

Congrats on the scores!

Kelowna: I read the other thread, that is pretty outrageous!

PAmom: It doesn’t sound to me like you are not way behind!

Roadshows: I want to go, but they are always on a night when S3 has drama. Ugh!

Life is busy! Have a great week!

Hi all. Well, Step-D did MUCH better on the ACT than the SAT. Not the score that I really was hoping for, but it seems like that rascally science section got to her. She did fairly well on every other section and the Science was low. Hoping that this is an anomaly due to many of your kids thinking the Science was wacky

She’s going to take it again on June 9th after some prep one-on-one with a tutor and then, hopefully we will be done!

Thanks to all of you for your support after her disappointing SAT scores. Today is a MUCH better day. She’s in the middle 50% range (or better) at nearly every school we’re going to look at this summer and she’s ~not very far away~ from this achievement at her top two choices! Whew!!

Ama308–look up the financial aid page on whatever schools your child is considering. They will have a link somewhere that shows what they have to offer for merit aid. They will have the numbers needed (GPA/ACT/SAT scores) to qualify for the various levels they offer. Some schools that money is automatic, some not. Some schools you need to use their net price calculator but you don’t have to register or anything for that. They usually ask “name” but I usually just put in their first initial and that works.
