Parents of the HS Class of 2013

Mail came today and DS got into the summer program he applied to. It’s just a 4 day program at one school he is considering but if he attends that school, $13,000 scholarship, minimum, renewable for 4 years!!

S13 knocks on our door at 6am today to tell us what his ACT score was…he had to tell us several times since we didn’t believe him the first few times.

Score = 35

Great way to start the week :D

Great news MDMOM!!! WOW!!

MDMom1314–!!!

Thanks TX5  I am still in a bit of shock…lol.

GC told him he needed at least at 32 or 33 for the top schools on his list.
He did nothing but study and do practice test for 2 weeks. Thankfully, he is “one and done”.

SteveMA: Thanks :)

BTW…he rec’d a recruiting letter from the Track coach at Harvard last week.
Hopefully between his times, 4.8 GPA and now this ACT score will help seal the deal  :)

MDMom - WOW! Congrats to your S! Looks like his dedication and studying really bore some amazing results! And…a recruiting letter from Harvard to boot! Amazing!!

Laurendog: Thank you :)

It’s been a surreal week. We are planning on going for his “unofficial visit” in Aug. D14 isn’t too happy about it. She wants him to stay closer to home.

Lacrossemom - we are going to the same “roadshow” today? maybe. Can’t remember the date. S is most interested in Brown but only has a 33 on the ACT and is not willing to take the test again. He wants to hear about Brown from the adcom and maybe he’ll be willing to take the ACT again.

SteveMa - congrats on the summer program. We decided against a summer program this summer. Son needs a job.

MDMom - Awesome ACT score.

We have a new dilemma over here. Son has decided he doesn’t want to go to any school with less than 5,000 undergraduates. I think the ability to find a school that fits him, fits financially, and fits academically just got a whole lot harder. One of his safety and completely free for us schools was College of Charleston and just yesterday there was a news segment about how gay students are harassed.

Congrats on all the excellent ACT scores!

MDMOM – wow on Harvard!

SteveMA – congrats to your S!

S hit a grandslam on the ACT last fall and decided there was no reason to take the SAT, so he’s been test-free for awhile . . . but, APs and SAT IIs are coming up fast. He’s FINALLY started prepping for the APs - even stayed in Fri and Sat night. He never did any for the ACT, so I think he’s a little overly confident for the SAT IIs. I’m hoping he’ll take a look at those once APs are out of the way.

CBGMass–the only reason we picked this summer program was for the scholarship. He can’t earn one year’s scholarship in 4 summers of working and for 4 days out of the summer we figured, why not.–as for schools, has he considered Macalester? I know it is under 5000 students but because of the campus location and cooperative programs with the other schools in the area (all within a couple miles of each other) it feels bigger. It’s also a gay friendly campus (and metro area for that matter). It might be worth a visit anyway. I would just make sure he goes in the fall when classes are in session so he can see how “big” it really is.

DS is taking the SAT to back up his ACT score. I suspect he will score better on the SAT because it tests his strong points but who knows.

CBG: Thanks :)

I think you will enjoy the presentation at the “roadshow”. We haven’t been to that particular one, but we did go to the one featuring Harvard, Stanford, Duke and Penn.
We found it to be very informative and it really helped S13 get a fell for all the schools in a single sitting.

This is a list of links I have for guaranteed MERIT scholarships for OOS residents based on ACT/SAT, class rank, and/or GPA (there may be competitive scholarships listed as well.) Most are not extremely generous, IMO, in some cases they don’t even bring down costs to in-state costs for even the highest scores. Some of these schools will offer other scholarships and stack them (honors college and departmental scholarships or need-based aid), but they don’t guarantee it. There are other schools that are notorious for being very generous with MERIT, but they don’t give a guaranteed amount based on gpa/test scores/class rank like these do. Others are known for meeting full need and being very generous to low-mid income families, but that’s not MERIT based aid. This also does not include NMS/NHS/NAS for the most part, which is a list in of itself.

I’m sure this isn’t all of them. Feel free to add if you know of any others that guarantee a certain amount for various scores/gpas/rank.

Wow, great scores all the way around. Congrats to all the dedicated students :)

Thanks SteveMA and MommyDearest13 for the Merit info…

CONGRADTS on the ACT scores and
$13,000 for 4 days is a walk in the Park…

I wish there was a Roadshow near us…so much easier than Driving only to hear at the info session…Yuck…

Just an FYI…My D did go to Harvard last summer…she Hated it…not the classes…but the Lack of attention from the Profs…only the TA’s would answer questions and help them…and the attitude to the kids wasn’t very warm…all the kids were so competitive to each other…and tourists taking their pictures all the time…she will consider the big H for Grad school but she wants to participate more in her learning experience at College…she got an A in one class and a B+ in the other…so I know she can handle the work…
Do I want her to go there…Yes…What parent wouldn’t…but after listening to Her…My Desires for her have changed…
I think she is Smarter than I am and I need to keep My Ego out of her equation…

Wow this is such an awakening experience…

Congrats to the ACT takers on some great (or at least better than expected) results.

Congrats on the scores, and kudos to steveMA’s S for the summer program.

Ama: Thank you for sharing your Ds experience at Harvard! I am hoping to gather as much info as possible before we do the visit in Aug. Before he rec’d the letter last week, he was considering Harvard for Grad school as well. But now with this opportunity, we will be taking a look at all options.

D got her ACT scores today. Better than the October SAT scores, but hard to say if that’s due to increased knowledge (pre-calc and AP Lang?) or due to the SAT prep class she’s taking or what. Anyway, she is scheduled for SATs Saturday and in June although I’m still hoping the SAT is good enough this time that June can become subject tests instead of the regular one. On a brighter note she also got into the UVA Leadership on the Lawn summer program this week, and is over the moon with excitement about that. Not a bad Monday, so far anyway. Good to see most everyone else is getting good, or at least satisfactory, news today too!

MDMom1314…If he can get in with the Track and can handle all the time for Div1 sports and the class work …which is very challenging…then Go For It…make sure to ask how much practice track requires Daily and during vacations…If his test scores are stellar…and he can handle the pressure…Go for It…again the child will know if it makes since for him and his desired goals at a school…
Word of warning…book a hotel NOW…and expect to pay top dollar…I couldn’t get a room when I picked her up for under $300 a night that was close and parking is a Killer…
