I think the book being referred to is called The Gatekeepers, and it referred to Wesleyan U in CT. The NY Times’ The Choice blog is run by the author.

Tan lines! Even S12 wishes that he didn’t have the tennis tan. He took off his shirt to play yesterday in hopes of getting rid of the sleeve tan - no effect yet! (He did wear sunscreen as he really doesn’t like to burn). D13 is conscious of her sock tan and when the weather is warm enough will wear flipflops in an effort to get rid of the lines. One of her good friends had to wear a knee brace all last summer and had a large, pale rectangular patch over one knee as a result!

sacchi - thanks that is the book.

lacrossemom - son took the ACT thinking he wouldn’t need any SAT subject tests. Now he has found a school that HIGHLY recommends subject test so he will be taking them. He decided to do the June SAT subject tests but that is graduation day for our district and no tests are offered. He is a marshall so won’t be able to miss graduation even if he could register in a different district. So looks like the idea that we were finished testing is not even close. S will take ACT in June and SAT subject tests in October.

Last night while I was typing a reply on CC my son looked over at the laptop and realized I was on here. He had no idea that I even read the site. He said I needed to stay off of here. We decided not to exchange screen names.

Hoping everyone has a great testing week.

I’ve still got a (figurative) prom hangover, I think.

This week looks tough. Not only does ds have the three APs, he has a history test in class this week. It’s a redo from last week’s that everyone did so poorly on the teacher is giving them a second chance. How bad? Even with a 22-point curve, ds made an 80, and he was above the class avg. He also has a sports physical one day after school (great planning by the district!) and two college receptions. Friday, after his APUSH test, we head out of town to see my BIL get an honorary doctorate from his college! Big family weekend. :)

Cancelled sending scores to colleges. Spoke with college board & they said they would contact us by email in 10 to 14 days. Not much help. D says she thinks she did really well on writing & may need that score for superscoring. Debating about signing up for June SAT. She would really like some semblance of a social life.

Happy Monday everyone!! And yes…busy week indeed!

Jr has (2) Finals on top of the his (2) AP tests this week. Not sure what they will be doing in these classes after all is said and done…hopefully they will have some free time to study for other Finals, etc…

socialdramamama - Hopefully when you get the scores back, they’re not as bad as you’re thinking. And the October SAT and sometimes the November one is still early enough for even early applications if you were planning that route.

YDS - Please share about the prom!! I mean, if you want to
I have to live vicariously through other people’s kids.

I hope everyone’s kid makes it through the testing, finals, projects, reports, plays, tournaments, debates, etc this week calmly. My S is pretty much done for this year, even though school doesn’t end until mid June, except for his normal assignments and quarterly projects.

ree, I had written out more then deleted it. I’ll PM you!

Well, S2 had his first meltdown last night. And of course, he blamed me - not the teacher who gave the extra assignments, or himself for waiting until the last minute to start. Apparently, I am the one who pressures him to overschedule himself. Even though he usually brags to his friends that we’re the parents who never make him do anything that he doesn’t want. When I told him that he could skip some of this commitments this week he replied, “I can’t do that! Then everyone would think that I can’t handle the pressure.” Circular thinking.

STAR testing for all today. Takes some pressure off but extra homework before AP tests. Looking forward to this being over. D tried to study yesterday but was totally burned out. She regrouped watching Games of Thrones with her brother. It was nice to see them hanging out. I was all sentimental until I went in to kiss my middle schooler goodnight and she informs me that she forgot to do a last part of The Odyssey project (9:30pm) off to the races I went with her…

I am talking to my family about some of your stories. I told them about the braces coming off and tan lines etc. and H thinks it is funny that I am invested in kids I don’t know. I do want good things for all these kids, can’t explain it!

You know that other summer program I thought S had no chance of getting in to? Yep, he got in! I cant even believe it. Now he has a tough decision to make as they two very different programs.

So many kids already taking/have taken Calculus. What math will they take next year? Does the school offer higher level math or will they need to go to a local college? I suppose for a lot of non-STEM majors, this could be the end of the road for math (except stats.) Our school only goes as high as AP Calc AB and you have to be a senior to take it.

Reeinaz Id share with you Prom stories if my S would share with me! The most I got was “it was fun.” I asked him if I could creep his FB page so I could look at everyones pics! lol Ill have to look for tan lines.

Anybody else getting tons of mail from Wittenburg? S got a package with a letter thanking him for his response showing interest in law what? Then, another one came thanking him for his interest in history wrong again! The latest now apparently hes interest in athletics! Geesh, are they going to just keep trying until they get it right! He’s never replied to them at all!

Mommy, ds’s school has a lot of math offerings. Ds could take multivariable calculus but will opt for AP Stats instead.

D has finished AP test 1- Psych. She said the MC section was fine, and then came the free response, where she was blown away. Apparently “the kid who knows everything” was equally taken aback. Well, at least its one out of the way, right? Should be an interesting score to see I guess.

Isn’t it amazing how busy they all are?! My S has AP Chem exam today AP Lit on Thur and AP Gov next week. Two track meets this week (so far they haven’t lost one this year…hopefully not jinxing him here) and getting over the exhaustion of prom and post prom party!!! He is supposed to submit his 2 names to the College Plans Reporting Service for being commended on PSAT score by May 23 and he still has no idea who to list. Any time I try to talk about it he’s to busy with everything else. Ughh!!!

D was very excited today when she received a letter that admissions reps from Bowdoin, Swarthmore, Pomona, and Carleton will be having a joint info session in town. She is interested in all 4 of those schools. Then looked at the date. There is another school function that night which she can’t miss. Disappointing. We have visited Swarthmore for a tour, and Carleton unofficially, but I don’t know if we will get to see the other two, at least before she applies.

She thought the AP Chem test was OK.

Mommy, my DD13a is taking AP Calc AB/BC this year as a junior (only 3 juniors were admitted; the rest are seniors) and will take AP Stats next year. No need to look off campus thank goodness!

DD13b actually called and talked to an admissions counselor today at a college that she is interested in. So proud of her! Lol

Good luck to everybody on the AP tests! I’m looking to see five 5’s in my mailbox in July, and hope everybody else gets the same :)

Harvard, Duke & others are coming to town Wed & Thurs but D has the APUSH exam Friday so it is unlikely we will go. Awards Day was this morning & Awards Night tonight. Also chorus concert & Thespian Awards night next week. It is hard to fit everything in!

D’s school has up to Calc BC and Stats. She is planning to do a math class at the local college next year but the dual enrollment counselor told her she had to have 5’s on BC and Computer Science. I know that isn’t true because I looked on the website but it has put added pressure on her. I’m hoping she gets the 5’s just so we don’t have to go argue with the counselor and get the math department involved.

D thought the Chem was ok too. She’s hoping for a 4. That should be good enough for her major.

S thought AP chem was a little difficult than he expected.
At S’s school, they have a variety of math courses that can be taken online. But S is not a fan of online math courses. So he takes them in a college.
Mommydearest: congratulations on your S’s summer camp acceptance.

MommyDearest

Congrats on the summer programs.

Calc AB is the highest at our school. My son has no idea what to do next year. The current teacher is leaving - if he were staying he would have done a tutorial with son. My kid’s biggest issue is if he wants to go STEM or Humanities. If STEM, then he isn’t worried about taking another year of math. Stats wasn’t offered at his school this year.

AP stress + 120 mile bike-a-thon on Saturday = Mom is stessed and kid is getting too little sleep.
