I goofed a little before. APUSH is this week and Lang is next week. As has been pointed out, the test date is set by College Board so everybody is in the same boat.

Just bought a plane ticket to Lubbock for S13 summer program. Had no idea it was that hard to get too - 2 stops and a plane change. He thinks that makes the trip more fun

^Yep, Lubbock is in the middle of nowhere. But the kids I know who go to Texas Tech love it. I couldn’t get either of my kids to even consider it. Nothing west of I-35.

MommyDearest, D has had several different types of appliances, lipbumpers and headgear, braces twice, two oral surgeries and a gum graft over the years. All but two of her baby teeth were removed by surgery and several impacted permanent teeth delayed and impaired growth. Right now she is wearing zigzag rubberbands until the braces come off on Wednesday and she can barely open her mouth. She has indured a lot and I am happy for her that the braces are coming off just in time for prom. Congrats on your S’s summer program!

D has AP Calc and APUSH tests this week. She went out on the deck this afternoon to study for APUSH with the duel purpose of getting rid of tan lines from tennis before the prom next weekend. Came back in to report that she was learning all kinds of useful information that would have been helpful to know for the US history subject test she took yesterday…hmm. Sun disappeared under cloud cover shortly thereafter…fail x 2.

Sorry for those who had technical difficulties on the SAT yesterday. I hope it works out in the best interest of your kids.

Can’t keep up this weekend what with prom distractions/sleep deprivation. Ds is sleepily studying right now, has three tests this week – BC Cal, Vergil and APUSH.

AP Calc AB/BC and APUSH this week, APLAC and adv. physics final next week. Idk what else they have on their plates for finals! Neither seem too concerned about any tests right at the moment. DD13a will quietly have an anxiety test before the Calc test and DD13b will have at least one full-out meltdown before one of these tests. I’ll be glad when school is out on May 18th!!

blueshoe, wow, that’s a lot of procedures! Hope she is near the end. My D is having jaw surgery this summer and we are hoping the healing is uneventful and quick. She is also hoping we can fit senior pictures into the brief time she will be without braces.

This week is incredibly busy for D this week too. 4 AP’s (chemistry, computer science, calc BC, and APUSH) Except for chemistry, her teachers have been very good about preparing the students in class. Activities for orchestra and/or band every night too. Band banquet Friday night will be fun though. Something to look forward to.

DONIVRIAN, my S took physics and US History yesterday. He said physics was hard, US was easy. Hope both are easy for yours!

Had a frustrating conversation with my father last night. He means well & of course I love him, but he is fixated on brand names and wanted to know if S had any Ivies on his list. I tried to explain that while S is a good student, he is just not Ivy caliber, but my dad heard that as me discouraging S from applying. S is a kid who tries to do what he thinks he’s supposed to (most of the time–he did blow off entire NHS application–grrrr) and I don’t want my father making him feel inadequate about not applying to Ivies. I know the ‘smile and nod’ rule, but the thing is, it’s really hard to drown out these voices when you are making choices. It makes you question yourself. Would I just say to S, go for Binghamton and be done with it if I didn’t have this pressure? Is the whole system making him unnecessarily stressed–with me and my own unrecognized prejudices contributing? (I’m not saying I’m prejudiced against state schools, just why go through a stressful process when you know you have a reasonable chance, at a good price, at a good state school?)

I wonder if adcoms ever get excited about offering a spot to a student? I mean, we fall all over ourselves to help our kids find and apply to schools and dance when they get in and weep when they don’t, right? I just have to wonder if adcoms ever lose sleep over a particular kid.

Blueshoes: Glad to hear that your D finally got off the braces. My niece has similar situation and has been in braces and other stuff for about 6 years now. Two more years, she will be done. My S has braces now- we started out a bit late. He might have to wear it for another year. Hope he will come out of it before heading to college.

MomofNEA: nice to know your S did well on USH, S is hoping that AP studying will help him do SAT well. We are going to buy a Physics SAT prepbook this week. His physics teacher was out for a month and a half due to some health reason, they didn’t have a good substitute and they were doing worktsheets most of the time. Now she is back, and is rushing through the lessons.

Walker1194 - I read a book once that was written by someone who spent an admissions season with a couple of adcoms and my impression was that they do get attached to some applicants and fight for them in committee and are really disappointed when the student chooses another school. Can’t remember the school but it was a small LAC I believe.

Interesting observations from the weekend. I was talking to some HS’12 fraternal twins (girls) and asking them about their plans for the fall. One is going to a school in NY and the other a school in Northern California. I asked them if they thought it would be hard to be away from their twin and they said they planned it that way, that they wanted to go to different schools so they could be individuals. I thought it was interesting. Then I was talking to S2 about S3’s search and his take on small school vs big school is that a small school might end up not being a match whereas at a big school there are so many different opportunities/people/clubs etc… that you can always find a match.

blueshoe, your post about the tennis tan lines made me smile - the tan lines from lacrosse goggles will be very evident in D’s prom photos! It is a good thing she is wearing a long dress, the white ankles from mid-calf socks are pretty funny too.

DD has been going to the tanning booth to “even out” her tan lines :D. She thinks it is helping but seems to forget that she is still outside every day and the lines keep coming back. Her white, white feet are still going to be an issue though.

To all those with tan lines…try the tan in a bottle…much SAFER than the tanning booths…and the products today are much better than what they were…it’s not the Orange glow of yesterday…having just had skin cancer surgery…Please heed my word of warning …

GOOD LUCK this week to all the test takers…mtobeiyf…

Good luck to all od the AP Test takers over next few weeks. My DD has two this week and two next week. This afternoon is AP psych, but she really has been more focused on APUSH on Friday.

Congrats to all of the SAT subject test takers. Couldn’t get daughter to take them. Right now there are no colleges on her list that requires them. I explained that tests are similar to AP tests and it would be easier than preparing again in the Fall (we are on vacation for June test). Instead she did an overnight on Friday with friends and came home late Saturday night. I have to admit I was happy because she has been studying so hard lately that I am happy she is finally having some fun especially since she didnt go to Prom on Friday.

Good morning! Wow, so many posts - I can’t keep up!

Good luck to this week’s test-takers.

Blueshoe, glad to hear that the braces will be off soon! DD just got hers off a few months ago, but now one of her bottom teeth is moving and they’ve given her a horrible retainer with a spring to try and move it back. I wish that they’d just put in a permanent bar- retainer in the first place, but oh well. Poor DS STILL has his and won’t get them off until he comes home this summer. Going away to college with braces is no fun.

Laughing at all the weird tan lines - DD was out in the yard yesterday trying to get rid of hers too. :)

CBGMass, I’d love to find that book - or maybe it would just make me more neurotic! lol

Thanks for all the well wishes for my D! She will be back out there in the sun today at the district tournament. Right now her feet look like they belong on another body…totally different color than the rest of her! She is not concerned about them though…just her shoulders where she has tanned around her uniform tank. Talk of a spray tan now. $$ just keep adding up for prom.

mamabear, D wears goggles in the fall when she plays field hockey. They can make you look a little raccoonish! D and her teammates have more complaints about the acne they contribute to though.

Walker, I follow on Twitter the comments of an admissions dean at a school my D is interested in. Last week, she tweeted that she was able to offer admission in person to an applicant on the waitlist that just happened to come in to the admissions office when she was on campus visiiting a friend. She seemed genuinely thrilled to be able to deliver the good news face to face to this student and witness her astonished reaction and joyful celebration!

Ama308–I suggested the tanning lotions to DD. She will probably end up using some but who knows. We’ve talked about skin cancer, etc. and she knows this is the ONLY time she will be visiting a tanning booth. Normally she doesn’t care about the tan lines but he dress is strapless and she has tan lines from about 7 different shirts/tops right now. She hasn’t been one to sunbathe in the past and is good about sunscreen.
