Parents of the HS Class of 2013

Oh! And! I can’t remember who suggested the split screen but it is really helpful in responding. Thank you!

our2girls-I know a couple kids at Bellmont and they just LOVE it there. Good luck to your DD!!

Even though school isn’t out until right before Memorial Day, today was the seniors’ last day. And the honors assembly is tonight with graduation on Monday. Really starting to hit home that WE’RE NEXT! Don’t know if I’m ready for this…

Just found out something about AP’s that I didn’t know so thought I would post it in case I’m not the only one. Maybe it isn’t true of all schools, but at least some schools automatically give credit for any qualifying AP score sent to them. This then means that the student cannot take the “equivalent” class at the college (at least not for credit) because they already have credit. My D took BC Calc, but since she is interested in a STEM field, I would really prefer she retake at least CalcII, partly because I am not convinced that the class at her school is really comparable in rigor to most college courses, and because it would maybe ease things and build some confidence that first semester. Anyway, it appears that if she wants to have that option, we need to write a letter to the collegeboard requesting they withhold that score from her AP report or she may not have the choice. Anyone have direct experience with this?

STEM, I think your instinct is correct to have her start with Cal II in college, unless she’s taking multivariable this year. Ds1 got placed into Cal III (MV) as a freshman based on his 5 on the AP in junior year. He questioned it at the time, saying it had been a year since he had calculus and that he didn’t want to start with III. They assured him that he would be fine; he wasn’t. He ended up dropping that class. I don’t know anything about the score report, though.

Mommy Dearest- Thanks so much! The list helps. Yes, my D is a vocalist. Wish auditions dind’t come up when she has APUSH to study for!
our2girls- My D is in a statewide show choir & several of those kids go on to Belmont. Great reputation! My D is considering it.
List published to today of top 20 in her class(without extra 10 points added for AP) & those have been asked to usher for graduation. They are excited. Interesting that now we truly know who is at the top of the class. They will add the 10 points at the end of the year & D has 3 APs. Most have 2. Then they will rank them.Anyone else have kids taking AP Music Theory?

STEMFamily…from the research I have been doing each school is different. You can go to the school and see on the website If they give credit and how much.
I know that unless you get a 4 or 5 they will not count it. Get a 3 and They May give credit against an elective. Each school is different…
Public schools tend to teach to the test and don’t go into the depth that a College level course does.
So you are right about the rigor…and depth of study.
Many schools no longer give credit for AP. What they look at is the rigor of the courses the student is taking.
Once admitted they can always request to take the course again if the College agrees to skip that course with a 5 on the AP.
Hope this helps…I was wondering about the AP exchange so I researched.

AP credits really depend on the university. Lots of lower-tier public unis give plenty of credit that’s not just electives. At a local place thatI just looked at, even a 3 in BC Cal will get you out of two math courses.

Also, in post 5959, I meant if she was taking MV next year, as in senior year.

Hi, STEMFamily, as Ama308 said, it varies from school to school how they treat AP courses. When S12 was applying at least 3 of the colleges he was interested in had placement exams during orientation week for math and this determined which course you got into rather than AP’s.

Socialdramamama, D is taking AP music theory. Can’t remember if it is Monday or Wednesday. I don’t think she is preparing too much, but they are probably prepping in class. She is NOT optimistic. She just says the notes on the tuba are really hard to recognize.

D met with GC today. She was okay with D’s list, I guess. Sent D home with a photocopy of a page from Rugg’s for neuroscience, which I already had due to some smart people on this thread! Shout out to RobD.

She did offer a few valuable suggestions, so D has some work to do after AP’s. Resume (before end of year) and parent letter (next year).

D just came in from SAT prep class. Wish she could have skipped. She’s missed so many from HS sports that she just couldn’t. She is one exhausted kid. School, then practice until 5, home to shower and grab a snack and was off to prep class. Not making me feel great about her APush text tomorrow. These poor kids. They look like zombies walking around. I know I didn’t have it this bad when I was in high school. Did any of you?

Appreciate the advice on AP’s. My concern was that she gets a high BC score and it gets sent and then the college won’t agree to let her take the lower class even if she wants to (I have heard our IS schools do this). We will just pay close attention to the college she decides and maybe have it withheld to be safe. Since she took the AB test last year, we can have that sent instead if she wants to skip Calc I.

YouDontSay – Thanks for the advice/corroboration of my thinking. Right now D is planning to take an applied linear algebra class at the local university, not MV calc next year. H and I recommended that partially because we want her to take CalcII and CalcIII where she goes to college and also because they don’t offer it at a convenient time for her. Her high school teaches Calc AB and BC in two years so they have more time but it still seems that they learn how/when to apply which formula but not much basic understanding of the theory.

89wahoo-- no I do not remember having this kind of pressure and sudden lack of enthusiasm for learning due to all the testing and focus on “getting into college”; however, my mother who is a retired HS teacher told me that all the teachers (and parents of her day) would see the same thing: “the freshmen kids would come into HS all excited and enthusiastic…by the time they were Juniors, they lost their smiles and were unhappy and demoralized”; now I bet that is not ALL kids…but I do think it is a majority, even now. it is really sad. What are we all doing to our children? Can’t they learn to love learning and that be it?

on a less depressing philosophical note (and back to the pressure we/they put on them): My D is now not sure she will take any SAT’s in june; however, she is going to need another SAT II, at least…because just the other day she says she may want to go to Columbia…(really big reach)…I feel like I am on a roller coaster!

Socialdramamama, S had AP music theory on Monday. He is more anxious (and invested in) APUSH for tomorrow and doesn’t have high expectations for himself for music theory. Some free listening or something (shows you how very little I understand and how useless I am in this regard) is supposed to be very difficult. Good luck to all.

As for sucking the love of learning right out of them, I definitely see it happening and can’t get to summer fast enough. School goes until mid June here so we still have a few weeks.

Good morning, and good luck to all of today’s AP test takers!

mid-marking period grades are up and it looks like DD is on track for all As! She had some bumps last marking period so her final grades may have a few B+s, but it’s so nice to see her turn things around.

Hearing how thin everyone’s kids are stretched, I’m feeling a little guilty - DD went to a softball game last night for a neighboring team (to scope out the competition for tomorrow’s game.) I don’t think that she did more than 20 minutes of homework!
The downside is no APUSH today (our school requires a 2-year course sequence for it, and she couldn’t take the first half due to illness.)
Remember I said, I’m just happy to have a happy, healthy kid? I could use a prayer or good ju ju on that front - her most recent medical tests weren’t as I would have liked, so we’re in a bit of limbo now.

Have a great day everyone - the weekend is almost here!

anniezz…I hope your D gets better FAST…
My Prayers are with her…
Think Positive and make sure she is eating very healthy…organic if possible…and limit any acidic foods…the more alcaline the body is the better…it will keep her resistance (immune system) up…
Plenty of rest too…sleep is a great healer…
and Laughter…smile all you can…
sounds silly but it helps…a lot…  :)

Aniezz–I think you help me keep things in perspective. thank you for that. I hope the medical tests turn around just like the grades.

in terms of grades…my DD had A’s (almost straight)first two years, now…due to her schedule and anxiety and social drama, I suppose, she’s dropping to all B’s(probably final grades unless she Aces all her finals, and even then, it may not get her to any A’s)…if she’s lucky, she will have a couple of A’s and maybe a B+…she’s besides herself, but she didnt really listen early on to the grown ups about how her choices might lead to this… I know in the end it does not actually matter, she will go to a fine school; I just hate watching her go through the disapointment .

drmom123…
Mine too…they just don’t listen and then they are upset with the grades…helloooooo
As the saying goes…You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make em drink…
I think if there are older kids in the house and they see the older ones go through this …they are more prepared…and understand the process better…
Mine will be Fine in a state school…

I forgot who asked about NYUAB…but the invitation process has started and for us due May15…mine will Not be applying as she has too much to do and the process is Very involved…Why do they wait till the last minute to tell anyone?? :frowning:
But it’s for the better for me…Way Way to Far Away…

Ah, Annie, I am sorry to hear about the medical tests. Hope things improve quickly for you guys. Definitely a reminder of what’s truly important. Hang in there!

Aniezz - sending good thoughts your way.

We haven’t talked about final exams a lot. Do your kids get to exempt finals? S can exempt only if he has an A in the class. Right now he has one class (calculus) that is on the bubble. He has an A but only by a tenth of a point so who knows where it will go with the next quiz or two.

Morning all! Happy APUSH & APEuro Day  Last minute prep in our house included D making sure that she remembered all of the Nickelodeon “Presidents” song ;)

Anniezz: sending wishes for positive health up to your D.

BerneseMtn: glad to be of help ;)

Re: Belmont. Great school! Close to me; feel free to ask me any questions about the area. If she’s looking for music business and not necessarily music performance, another hidden gem is MTSU (Middle Tennessee State University.) I was surprised to hear that students come from many states (including Hawaii) for their program: [Department of Recording Industry – Middle Tennessee State University: Audio Production Degree, Music Business Degree, Commercial Songwriting](http://recordingindustry.mtsu.edu/) I know a few people in the area (and a good amount of people here are in the music industry due to the proximity to Nashville) who couldn’t make the $$$ work for Belmont, but are now happy at MTSU.

CBG: students here are exempt from finals if they took the AP test; only seniors are exempt from midterms & finals IF they have a 91 or above average going into the test and if they’ve had 6 absences or less (excused or unexcused) during the semester.
