Parents of the HS Class of 2013

S’13 just left for APUSH test. He really didn’t do any preparation, other than class assignments (lots of timelines). He really loves the class and has been doing well in the class, so he wasn’t too worried this morning. just mad at me for forgetting to wake him up early. Dad bought him donuts to make up for our “mistake.”

As far as finals go, at S’s HS, they can be exempt from finals if they pass the relevant section on the state test. And if they are “commended” on the state test, they get an automatic 100 on the final (which really helps). But, state test results aren’t released until a couple days before the final, so they still have to prepare - in theory. S’13 has been commended on every section of the state test since 3rd grade, so I can’t imagine that he’ll have to take finals. At the most, he will have a final in choir and theatre!

so glad I am not alone in this process! thanks to all!

STEMFamily–we have found a few schools, mostly state schools, that place you in classes based on your AP tests. Those schools were not good fits for our kids for that reason and other reasons. The schools the kids will most likely attend will give credit for AP’s but not in their major courses so they aren’t even taking AP’s in their intended majors. Some of the other schools they are considering don’t give credit for any AP’s but will use them for placement outside of your major. We are finding that AP’s just are not that helpful for college credit–but very helpful for preparing for college type classes.

The teachers have been very kind to the kids and really aren’t giving homework. They had a little math last night, about 10 minutes worth, and that is about all they have had this week. It’s been a nice, relaxing week for them actually. They are doing prep in their classes for their tests so that is good. DS did go to a study session yesterday morning before school for the AP Euro test today and the teacher gave a practice test after school so he didn’t do any studying last night. They will pretty much be done with major homework for the rest of the school year now. They do a big project across several classes but most of that is done in class. Since most of their classes are AP classes, there just isn’t much to do after the tests.

Anniezz, I am sorry to hear about your D’s medical tests. As drmom and others have said above, it puts all of our other concerns in perspective.
S12 will probably be exempt from the final in one of his classes but the others don’t have the option. D13, even with A’s will have to write all of hers.

Annie, adding my good thoughts for your dd.

Another day, another AP test. Ds spent a couple of hours studying last night for APUSH. I was a little disappointed that the teacher didn’t lead evening study sessions as he has in the past. I’m not sure why he’s stopped. But it’s a strength for ds, so I’m sure he’ll do well, but maybe not 5 well.

Boy, there is nothing going on at school. Almost every upperclassman takes AP classes, so, really, it would be impossible to have normal classes. Yesterday, ds and three friends got passes from a coach so that they could lift weights during the last period of the day instead of go to class. His teacher was disappointed because he wanted ds to play spades with him! We still have three weeks, so it seems too soon to just do nothing from here on out.

There is some mechanism for kids to get out of finals, but I don’t know what it is. I think it’s if you get commended on the state-mandated tests, but I don’t know when we get those results.

Good wishes to Anniezz - all will be well :)

I just realized this am that DS will not be able to take June SAT Subject as he will be at National ARML competition that very day! Arghhhh…there goes my planning. Will have to take them in October, last minute before the early app.

AP Euro today, a killer subject at our HS. ;)

Off to work…

Thanks everyone for the good wishes. A bit stressed out about it all, so I ended up taking the morning off from work for some “down time.”

Kelowna, in previous years, kids who went to ARML were able to test on an alternate day if the school agreed to it. (This was an issue for son for SAT2 tests, and the school made arrangements for a makeup.) ARML was one of the few reasons you could do that. I may have read something though, about that changing for this year?)
http://www.arml.com/SAT_Alternate_Date_Policy_and_ARML_2011.pdf

OMG …Can’t keep up with this thread.

Anniez: Wishing your D all well.

Kelwona: There is a provision in collegeboard to ask for alternate test date. Here is the link:
<a href=“College Board - SAT, AP, College Search and Admission Tools”>College Board - SAT, AP, College Search and Admission Tools. Parents can not ask for alternate test date. But schools can. My S is also in ARML during the week of SAT’s. But the alternate test date is arranged for the group of kids by another school. Youc an check this out.

I think I cross post with anniez

Anniez, wishing your D well.
Good luck on all APUSH test takers today. It seems like a long test, I forgot how long the test is but D2 left the house @7:00 this morning and won’t be back until 12ish.

Anniez–good luck with the medical testing. Did you say what was wrong with your DD? I missed it if you did. Our DD had a year of medical appointments last year so I sympathize with you on that. It’s frustrating not knowing what is causing the issues.

So, anyone heard reviews on the APush exam from their kids? D said everyone thought the multiple choice was easy and the essay questions were harder for her. She could not figure out how to organize one? Anyway she’s off to have a nap before practice later, which is exactly what she needs. I hope everyone who took the test did well!

Soooo much to catch up on here! Good luck on all AP tests today! AP Euro is our schools hardest class! D loved the class and would not have traded it for anything!

Anniezz…positive thoughts and healthy prayers for your D!!

Congrats to all athletes! Impressive with all the AP stuff going on! I love hearing about CIF tennis since that was my world in So Cal when I was in HS.

Had to look up ARML, all you people with your smarty pants math kids! Congratulations but a bummer with the conflicts! Sounds very impressive!

Ama308- So true about the younger siblings! They watch and learn!

Drmom, I think we have very similar D’s. My D was sick for two weeks, mono like virus, sleeping 16-18 hours a day. Came back to school, with A’s in all classes, thinking she owned it and literally made F’s and D’s across the board on all tests. So, she ended the first half of the semester with 4 D’s. She has fought tooth and nail to raise those 4 weighted classes and even had a D in regular USH. She will have 3 B’s at the end and will be happy to come up for air. Life goes on!

AP stats cheaters update. We don’t know what happened with the cheaters but my Daughter went from an A (1st final) to a B on the second (homemade test). She wanted the A so she could prove to the teacher that with her straight A’s since her sickness, he would give her mercy and drop the F’s and she would get an A. He sure gave the cheaters a break! Again, life goes on!

Honors anatomy big test today. This class has been the most surprisingly hard class for D regardless of being sick. Also, AP Stats and AP Lang just assigned big projects for after AP test!

I heard that Music Theory is a BEAR! Many of our band kids take it for an easy AP in their schedule…NOT! Any kids in AP Studio Art? Our kids usually do it in two years? Those projects are intense!

Latin. Somone mentioned it here. My D, after all this stress (:, still wants to take Latin over the summer since it isn’t offered at school. Any suggestions?

Good luck all TGIF!

Good luck to the test takers. S3 has APUSH. He says he felt ready. I am excusing him from Mother’s Day activities so he can study for AP BIO.

On a lighter note, Our Prom is June 2nd. So S3 is working on his “promposal”. He is asking a very good friend. I have never bought “fruit snacks” or “fruit by the foot” for my kids because my good friend (a dentist) says that they are very bad for the teeth. So since 6th grade this girl has brought my “deprived” son those type of snacks (and other snacks) every day for his lunch. So the plan is to get a lunch box or lunch bag and fill it with those type of snacks, in addition to a double sided frame. On one side of the frame he is putting a picture we found of the two of them from junior high, and on the other side we will put a note saying she can put their prom picture there (or something like that). They have an AP Bio review session Saturday morning so the plan is to give it to her there and say “I brought you a snack”. A few details still need to be ironed out. But it is a nice diversion to the stress of AP’s.

^^ TX5athome, that’s cute. I love the creativity these kids have with their “promposals” (i love that word, too). My D and her boyfriend are not going to prom, though they’ve been together a while. I think the cost of it all somewhat overwhelmed them, so they are planning to go all out for it next year. Hope they are still together!! She is not too disappointed, I think she would have been happy to go though. The Class of '12 board has put up a private gallery of all their kids so they can actually see the kids they’ve been rooting on for all this time. Might be something fun for us next year too.

Our prom is next weekend. DD is finalizing all her plans. She is pretty excited, it’s her first prom. Her boyfriend asked for “prom” for his birthday so his parents are paying for the prom stuff. They aren’t going all out, most kids here are pretty low key. They are going to a nicer restaurant for dinner and the girls are getting pedicures/manicures but that is about it. Her dress was very reasonable, shoes were cheep and she is getting her hair done for free.

Tx5 – That’s nice that his brother wants him there! I did see UCLA was really tough this year. My S is also like your S – a very happy kid that I couldn’t imagine being unhappy anywhere. That makes our job a little easier. “Fit” is way down on S’s list if it’s on there at all. Very cute “promposal” too!

VBCMom – Got it! Is it that competitive at ALL colleges? I don’t know a thing about CD - clearly!

Wahoo – I definitely didn’t have it this bad in HS . . . because I didn’t care at all! I took easy classes, did nothing and happily got Bs, and I don’t recall anybody prepping for the ACT. Since my older brothers always had D’s and F’s, I think my Mom thought I was doing fine. Apparently she didn’t understand what aptitude meant. lol btw, how did the whole dental thing go with your younger S?

Drmom123 – I know what you mean . . . out of the blue, my S came home asking about Brown. I have no idea where that came from!

Anniezz – congrats to your D on the grades! I’m sorry to hear about the health issue – your family will be in my thoughts.

LATIN – our school does offer 4 years of Latin, but not AP. Lots of kids go that a route – the teacher is a hoot!

FINALS – Last year, if the kids got a certain score on the state graduation test, they could skip the final. This year, 2 of S’s AP teachers aren’t giving finals. The one AP is also a dual credit college course, so there has to be a final. He just told me yesterday that Senior finals are a week earlier, and since most of his classes are senior classes, he’ll be done early for the most part. I guess he’ll only need to go that last week for one final.

S is off taking AP Euro feeling very prepared. I guess this teacher has an excellent record. He got to sleep in this morning since he didn’t have to be there until 11:30. He’s loving that all his AP exams are afternoon exams.

@Anniez – Positive thoughts and prayers being sent your way.

9 p.m. last night:
“Mom - AP Music is being offered for the first time next year. Since I’m seriously considering a music major, I really need to take it. There is no math being offered that I can take, so I’ll self study Calc BC and linear. I can’t apply to colleges as a math major without taking math senior year. Alex is taking the AP Physics exam this year even though school doesn’t offer the class. I figure it will be good for me to take it next year if I decide on engineering…” I turned out. He went through 3 majors in 45 seconds. Smile & nod. Smile & nod.

7:30 am today:
“I totally forgot to study the end of the 20th century. I know nothing from Reagan on. And women - I know nothing about women. I’m never getting into a college.” Smile & nod.

I am jealous of those of you whose AP kids don’t need to attend school after AP exam is finished and those of you whose kids are excused from a final.

DD13b just sent me a text and said she thought the APUSH test was really easy. Let’s hope that is true and 5’s are all in our mailboxes in July!

Longhaul… lmao at 7:30…

Hey everyone, kid here. Just thought I would le everyone know about the test. Wasn’t as hard as I imagine (I’m like a 85 ish student) I thought multiple choice was harder then the essays I honestly think I kicked behind on DBQ and the first essay, my mind kind of shut down for the last one. I wish everyone good luck!
