Parents of the HS Class of 2013

Walker- LOL with the twins schedule, I was just about to let myself out of the slacker corner of the basement until I saw Dadotwo’s schedule next year…

Our school has no college classes on campus. Although others that do, prefer them to AP’s because they don’t have all the time consuming high school project parts of the AP’s and just the tests. We have Advanced classes that are not weighted, our Honors classes are as hard as AP’s and weighted but no AP tests. AP Euro is soph year and the only AP allowed that year. Requires huge summer project, two hours of homework per night and you reach god status if you make an A…although 100% pass the AP test and more 5’s than any other class.

Momma- Very cool!

Ana- What an awesome experience to have in Mongolia! Outstanding!

Apollo_ Thanks for the lead for Latin. Looks like a great fit!

MDMom- Good luck at the track meet. I am a So Cal girl living in N. Cal with your backyard! We could make this a progressive party. I love the basement as we don’t have them here mostly due to those pesky shakers(:

Annie- D was in Oriel College, Oxford. Which college is your son in? My parents live 50 miles from there, so I know it well. It gave D perspective of the setting she wants for college, urban (at least like Oxford or much bigger) and happening. She spent another summer at UCLA, too. This summer we encouraged her to go to a small LAC to contrast her other experiences and see if she changes her bias. Hope softball went well today! Good job on D’s RBI’s

D is at AP Stats review this morning followed by tennis. Little D left hours ago driving up to Sacramento for LAX and my S15 is just waking up. I am typing in my pavilion on a sunny morning with my Cavalier, while husband is on Jeep trip in the desert. I feel like this is the calm before the storm (:

Vandy and wahoo- I’m with you with my pretty stress free HS life. In fact, I used to cut class once a week for sailing lessons and did homework on the beach…and I still got into a top 25 school. Went to a blowout party the night before the SAT and never prepped! My D’s scores blow mine out of the water yet she will be hard pressed to get into my school today.

Gets my vote for the unofficial thread motto  Can we have Cosmo’s in the basement?

Yes, I am a mom. I “fool” people all the time, which was not my intent when I signed up with that screen name!

Schedule next year has AP Bio, AP Spanish, AP Gov’t/AP Econ, AP English Lit, AP Stat & Journalism. I anticipate that there will be at least one conflict (some of these will only be available for 1 period & I’m sure there will be a similar situation to this past year…but it worked out well, so next year will too.)

mommaof5: congrats on the prize! Relax & enjoy :)

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms on the thread, and the wives of the dads of the thread.

Closet, basement or backyard in CA, I’m with you!
We do have AP courses here but not many and they often seem to conflict with other desirable courses (AP Calculus with Programming 12) and not many students take them really. As in the US not all Canadian universities will allow them for automatic credit against first year courses. However, S and D are in a Challenge program that draws kids from all over the city (is this like a magnet school?). They had to apply for grade 9, a lot of on site testing and essays. It has been rather nice because although the school itself is a relatively large public school (over a 1,000), there are only two classes, less than 50 students each year taking core courses together. The teachers have been very good and the courses are considered to be beyond the honors level courses offered. S12 found that he was well prepared for the subject tests with the classes that he took.
D13 will be taking:
English 12 Challenge
Math 12 Honors
Calculus
Physics 12
Visual Arts 12
Drafting (Architecture) 12
Comparative Civilizations 12
and either French 12 or Creative Writing 12

She is doing Chemistry 12 this year and decided that she wasn’t interested in Bio 12 although she’s doing well in Bio 11 and is actually interested in genetics (…oh, well).

Happy Mother’s Day to all!

Who needs a liver anyway? Not me. Bourbon and strawberry margaritas are my drinks of choice, though I really don’t drink much.

I can barely keep up y’all are so prolific. We’re out of town celebrating my BIL, who received an honorary doctorate from his alma mater yesterday. Everyone has gone to lunch, but I elected to stay in the hotel, in this comfy bed watching the Rangers play.

I don’t remember ds’s sked for next year. The APs are APES, Stats, Econ/Govt and English. Latin will be an independent study since he’s already done with AP. Everything else is an elective, some easier than others. :)

S thought the APUSH test was a little easier (did better) than on the AP Chemistry test. Next week, he has AP Bio and AP Lang. Fortunately, there is no test for AP computer science II this year.

So many posts in the pasts 3 days, way to much to keep up with!

D’13 took her practice WH Ap exam last week, she scored a 4  it will be interesting to see what the teacher has in store for the class after the exam Thursday, I hope she goes easy on them. There are only 3 weeks in school left, but D just started an English 101 DE course that is only 6 weeks long so it is pretty intense!

As for next years schedule it is not nearly as intense as some of y’alls but it is not weak either:
Teacher Peer (HS) this is for the only HS english teacher she has had and he will also be writing any recs
AP American Gov/ AP Econ (HS)
German II ( online as the Current German teacher is being fired)
English 102 (DE)/Speech (DE)
PreCalc (DE)/Calc (DE)
Spanish I (DE)/Spanish II (DE)
Bio (DE)/Chem I (DE)

All DE classes are on the CC campus.

We have estimated that D will have 60’ish credit hours to transfer in to a College.
As

I suggest the Basement in the hot summer month and the California backyard in the winter? although, that may only work for us in the northern parts of the country? In any case, my D has announced two things 1. she is NOT going to take the SAT in June…she will take it in October “no questions asked”…and she will take the SAT II math level 2 in June. She thinks she did not do well on the american history SAT II, so she says maybe she will retake in November (she’ll be in AP american then). 2. I had to leave the kitchen because she is making a mother’s day eve dinner for her cooking class…!

I definitely vote for a winter and summer venue for the Fetal Curl 2013. Booze is optional, whining and gnashing of teeth preferred. I’m getting a hot tub this fall, so I think my basement would be awesome for fall/winter. It gets muggy here in the summer so let’s head for SoCal or NoCal then.

It’s happy hour at my house. Dd13a is babysitting 4 boys under 10, DD13b is out with her boyfriend. He is Mormon and we are Episcopalian. We may have a really interesting wedding someday, lol. That poor boy WORSHIPS the ground D walks on and has since spotting her at band right before 9th grade. They are very cute together and he has learned to understand my sick and twisted brand of humor.

My DH is studying. He leaves for Rio next Friday and I got two spankin men’s suits for Mother’s Day. Awesome.

H and I are home alone. D with her boyfriend, S14 with his HS soccer team and small S ('17) off at a friend’s. Very quiet, just us and the four dogs. Taste of the future?
Hope everyone has a great Mothers Day tomorrow (dads included!).

Walker, you are cracking me up. Fetal Curl 2013? Sounds like an Olympic sport!

Oh and about your D dating a Mormon, is he going to go on a mission trip after HS then? So do they delay college to do that?

Also- Book of Mormon? Awesome music! A couple of songs that will burn your ears off but otherwise really funny and cute. Just found out it’s coming to our area next summer. Super excited! :-)

Happy Mother’s Day to all!
H and I are going shopping  so I’ll make this quick.

Book of Mormon is AMAZING! Saw it on Broadway this Feb. One of those musicals you see and just get your mind blown. I can’t explain it, but you sit there thinking about how amazing it is that two people could come up with the concept and put it into a musical, etc. etc. The language is NOT for anyone under 16 (in my honest opinion) and there were more than a few times that the coarseness of the dialogue made me cringe, but it is WORTH IT! Run - don’t walk (if any of you get out of the basement or backyard lol) and see this musical if you are anywhere near NYC or if it comes to your city/town!

Disclaimer - if you are Mormon or extremely religious (any other religion) you might want to skip the whole thing…just sayin’

By the way…loving the upgrade from the basement to the SoCal backyard! Sign me up for some Sangria!! :)

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms on this thread, posters and lurkers!

Happy Mother’s Day! We have a stressful year of “mothering” ahead of us. I am glad to have company (whether it is in the closet, basement, backyard or wherever).

Happy Mother’s Day to everyone here.

My mom used to say, “My job is to raise my children to be productive, kind adults, not just well behaved children.” This group has nothing if not very productive offspring! You all seem to be doing a great job of raising amazing people! Happy Mother’s Day!

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms, step-moms, dads who are moms to their kids, and mothers to others!

So…D’13 is re-thinking taking the June ACT, which she is already signed up for, and instead wants to take a prep class this summer and take the September ACT. Does anyone know what happens if you just don’t show up to take the test? We did not list any schools for sending scores.

I’ll try to find something on their website, too. Just seems to me that this happens when kids get sick. Not happy about the registration fee, but actually feel better about her wanting to take a good prep class and hopefully raise her score.

Wow - this thread moves quickly! I’ll try to become more engaged…I love hearing how others’ kids are doing in hs and with their college search. Thanks, all!

our2girls…you will loose your fee…but more prepared is a Blessing :)

HAPPY MOTHERS DAY TO ALL :)

And to all those prepping for tomorrows AP Bio…MTOBEIYF…

I said that to my D the other day before the test and she thought I was so Cool…:)…who knew :)

Wanted to wish everyone a wonderful Mother’s Day before I head out for some jacuzz, rum and sun in the backyard :)

TX5: I LOVED your school!! Just beautiful!!! Next week, Jr runs in the CIF Finals at Mt Sac college…

Good luck to all of those with AP’s tomorrow. Jr will be going early as his AP Bio teacher does a pancake breakfast for those taking the test.

Have a great day everyone!!!

Hope everyone had/is having a great Mothers Day! It was a beautiful NE Ohio day!

Our2girls – you can reschedule the test date online for $21 anytime up to the registration deadline (August 17th for the September test). You pay the entire fee plus $21, then ACT will refund the original payment for the June test. So you don’t lose the entire fee.

Good luck to all the AP Bio, Physics, and Music Theory testers tomorrow!

MommyDearest13
Thank you for the clarification…I was misinformed…I also realize that I lost a retake partial fee :(
