Parents of the HS Class of 2013

Happy Mother’s Day to you all. Chillin’ out in front of Survivor with S’18 and W after a fun beach day. Hope you all enjoyed your day.

And good luck to the test takers this week.

Happy Mother’s Day to all, and a good start to a new week!

Ds finally started studying for the Physics AP. Hmmmm, he’s hoping for a 3 at this point. I’m a little bummed because the teacher has been MIA for a lot of the past two weeks, and the kids haven’t gotten the in-class practice that a lot of the teachers provide. Oh well.

I think I freaked my son out last night when I showed him the calendar and pointed out that he only has 4 more weekends left before school ends. Which in his mind is only 4 more weekeds to catch up on assignments  I also had to remind him that the grades go in a little earlier than even that. June 15th seemed so far away up until then.

Good luck to the AP testers.

^^What a terrible time for a teacher to be MIA! Sorry, YDS – hopefully he’s better prepared than he thinks. S didn’t do a lot of studying for Physics either, but I’m not so concerned since he’ll need to take it again in college anyway. He said he took a couple practice tests last night and scored a solid 4 on both. He will have to study some more for the SAT 2, which is less than three weeks away!

He looked at the 2013 AP Test schedule – next year he will have all four of his tests within four days (M-T-W-R mornings). No sleeping in next year!

So proud of my son! Saturday was his big bike ride to raise scholarship money for his school. As some of you may recall, my kid doesn’t even own a bike. He took on the challenge from the headmaster and was the sole junior to complete 100k (123 miles)! The kid can dazzle me at times.

This morning - back to reality - He told me to call and change the tux color, date doesn’t think he’ll match her since she has a “weird” purple. Umm, besides changing a vest/tie at this late date, what about the flowers? Do I even care if they match?

The AP Lang books did not move over the weekend. I need to put my blinders on.

Wow Longhaul!!! That is so cool!!
For flowers, I would play it safe with White roses with a purple wrap for a solid color dress. Black roses can be a bit morbid…but might look cool if his tux is black ;)

Checking in! Congrats to your son MDMOM! How exciting! Longhaul: Wow!

S3 is in the middle of his AP BIo test. I told him he didn’t have to go with us to my mom’s for dinner last night, but he said he felt ready. Sometimes he can be overconfident.

The “promposal” went well. She said “yes”. I didn’t get much more than that.

Longhaul, that’s amazing about the bike ride! I’m impressed you have flowers ordered already. It was a “week of” thing for ds. Can’t go wrong with white. I stargazer lily might look cool with any color purple.

tx5! Yea for the yes. I think your ds and mine are a lot alike. Though my ds was NOT confident about today’s physics AP.

Ohhh…I do like the Stargazer Lily idea
Jr opted to not go to Prom as they had it the night before Track League Finals, so I need to live through all of ya’ll :)

Longhaul: That is amazing, you should be proud!

Ok, does anyone have any advice on Letters of Recommendation? If S asks now, which I think is what is recommended, doesn’t he need to let the person know where they are sending the letter? I didn’t think that they give the letter to him. Is this just to give the person a heads up that he will need it in the fall? Is there anything he should give the person he asks (stamped addressed envelope?) Can he ask them to send the same letter to multiple universities? Does he need to wait until he applies? Btw when is the earliest they can apply?

Yea to Longhaul’s son. My DH is a cyclist, so I know that is a real accomplishment.

My D’s GC suggested asking the teachers for recommendations “as a heads up” because some of the teachers have limits as to how many they can/will do…

Momma: I think it is more of a “heads up”. ;They send the recommendations electronically on the Common Ap and so technically if they tell them now and the student fills out the application early (a girl can dream!) they could get the notification prior to school starting again in the Fall.

AP question. S3 just took the AP Bio test. He said the FRQ’s were really hard. Anyway, he said that some other kids in teh room got different FRQ’s that were not as hard. I thought they were all taking the same exact test? ANyone know? I think I will go ask on the AP board.

TX5: Not sure, but I will ask Jr when he gets home after practice. He took a “practice” AP Bio test that his teacher used for their “Final”. He got 106%, so praying that the real test went just as well as the practice ;)

Over in the AP forum they told me that 2 forms of the test were administered “O” and “E”. My son had “O” and felt the FRQ’s were harder than his friends said the ones on"E" were.

Just found out that mine had the O too…She knew the difference when I asked her about them and she said it was unfair that one was harder…
So I feel for all the kids out there who got the harder one today…sometimes…
life just isn’t fair…but let’s hope everyone did great!!!

Don’t you think the “O” test will have a different curve than the “e” test? With AP Bio it is really the luck of the draw with the FRQ’s anyway. What might be easy for me might be hard for you and visa versa.

Awards assembly today. S’13 won class favorite again for the 3rd year in a row. He really lobbies for this award. He’s a master politician - working every demographic at school. As he explains, “I went to elementary school with all the black kids. I speak Spanish so I can joke around with the Hispanic kids. I’m cute and gay, so I get the girl vote. And (foster brother) is captain of the wrestling and football teams so I get the jock vote.” I guess his strategy is working. I asked if he could parlay that popularity into class president or something. He looked at me like I had 2 heads. “Mom, that would require actual work!” Sigh. Just another pretty face…

@megpmom-congrats to your son! I was so happy to see that an out of the closet boy at my kids school got the vote for lots of stuff this year including homecoming king. It’s nice to know that kids are more accepting of their gay classmates than the previous generations. Hopefully soon it just won’t matter at all.
