Parents of the HS Class of 2013

my D says you get a zero if you ‘write off topic’…

CBG: what magic is this that you speak of? Something besides Naviance & Cappex?

Last AP test for D tomorrow: AP Language. Our AP English teacher has them uber prepared so no stress about that today. But D is weary. She only has to go to school for 3 1/2 more days and 2 1/2 of those are exam days. Thursday will be her last regular day of school. She is so ready.

D is taking AP Bio next year & her friends taking it this year keep saying “Lucky!” because of all the rumored changes.

RobD: I talked to our AP Bio teacher (she is also the tennis coach and a friend) about the changes. She is not looking forward to it, she says they will be covering less things, but going into more depth. And she said something about they expect the students to develop their own labs, etc… It will be very interesting to see the differences.

MegP- I am so happy for your son. He sounds like a terrific kid. I love how he has overcome challenges like he has. I second whomever suggested that for an essay topic. I think it is perfect and really says a lot about your child’s inner strength. :-)

We’ve settled into a couple of more laid back weeks after the absolute HELL week of May 1. Every now and again I ask D to make sure she’s working on study guides and note cards for finals so we don’t have another complete meltdown week during finals but at the same time, it is so peaceful…

Got a call from the HS today that unbeknownst to her, D will be receiving some kind of Presidential Achievement award or something at the Senior Awards ceremony on Monday. I’m not allowed to tell her, so I’m just telling you guys instead. Shhhh!

I’ve been taking all my nervous/panicky energy about grades/college/apps etc and putting it toward planning our Disney trip at Thanksgiving. By then most apps will be in and it gives me something mindless to do that I can be all controlling about. lol

CBG your post makes me happy. D has perfect grades and all the rigor she needs but those tests are becoming her nemesis. It’s not making for a peaceful spring. However her soccer team lost (in most amazing fashion, unfortunately) last night so all that remains of the season is a last load of laundry and the party. This could be good for her. I’m hoping I’m not on a first name basis with the liquor store by this time next year.
RobD, I too was thinking you’re a dad. These changes to AP Bio are supposed to be good? That they’re changing it is news to me. S14 is taking Ap chem; heloves chemistry but his sister says its one of the hardest APs, and this is a concern since S does not have 1/4 of D’s work ethic. Not surprisingly he also doesn’t have her GPA and could use high grades next year. Any changes to chem? … She says hopefully?

Congrats on the Presidential Achievement award, Vandygrad. I won’t tell ;)

Wherenext: DS has been studying–not enough in my opinion but I will force him to do more-even if it means standing over him with the rolling pin! LOL I hope, and I checked, that even if he doesn’t bring his ACT scores up significantly, he can still get into Unversity of Utah or Uinversity of COlorado Colorado Springs. These are his top 2 choices. I put his information in and both came back as excellent chance. Besides from raising the score, I told him that scholarships, etc. look at those scores so they are important! His comeback…he knows but both his 1st/2nd choice schools weigh GPA more heavily than test scores. Guess you can’t argue with a 17 year old.

This same 17 yr old took AP physics (really thought that one was hard) and AP US History(thinks he did good on that). And of course he sent the reports to his top 2 schools when he filled out the paperwork for the APsat school…after I told him not too!!

I just keep thinking-One more year One more year!

Vandygrad…Mums the word…but AWESOME FOR HER…
I’m sure you are really PROUD…

And Disney…is the BEST…

Vandygrad, that’s fantastic! Quiet congratulations!

Hello all! I take a break for a week and am overwhelmed with the posts. I have been travelling with work and spending time with family. Congrats and condolences where necessary>:)

ONE MORE EXAM- tomorrow. IB ECON. D feels like the school year is done although she technically has until June 20 something.

She has been a basketcase with studying, or should I say thinking about studying while secretly tumbling, facebooking, and tweeting. Add in some Prama and I am ready for her to go to college in September.

D has been made Editor of the school newspaper next year! I think her schedule will be a bit too full as she is also Student Govt President. I hope she can handle it all. Judging by the end of this year I have some doubts.

Now to get really serious about the college search. What do you all know about IU?

D ran a relay race in Bloomington, Indiana in 2010 and we walked around campus, but did not take a tour. Beautiful campus, limestone buildings using stone from local quarries, quad is a FOREST, rather than open grass. The town around the campus seems very similar to the town around UI-Urbana/Champaign and Purdue, shops selling college wear, an Urban Outfitters, bars, restaurants, yogurt shops. Not fancy, but not totally run down either.

I am sure that is not what you are after, but the campus is a lovely place, a nice surprise. It is a very popular destination for kids from our high school, but none of my son’s (HS grad of 2010) close friends went there, so he has not visited since.

Nellieh: congrats to your D for editor and student government president! That’s great news! I don’t have any input on IU but only because it isn’t on our radar.

Thanks for the Congrats for D. I had to put it in code on the calendar! ;-)

Congrats to your D, Vandygrad and to you for keeping a secret!

Hi everyone! Wow, so many amazing things going on. Congrats on all the awards and accomplishments! We have a terrific group of kids here! I can’t wait to see what happens with all our kids over the next year, or two!

Congrats to your daughter, Vandy, I know it will be hard for me to keep a secret.
AP exams are over, back to take it easy for D2.
I’m also been planning a week in Hawaii for Thanksgiving. The airfares are so expensive that I have not booked yet.
On the college front, last week D2 went to a college info session and reported one Ivy league was not what she expected, judging the college by its pictures :D. She then gave me permission to look for colleges in the midwest(yippee). I found 2 colleges that she likes and they both have very high acceptance rate(big relief). My daughter wants to go out of state.

Congrats, nellie and vandygrad!

Ds is busy writing a rap for school.

Vandy- Congratulations!!! Secret is safe with us!

Nellie- Congrats on being Editor and SB president next year! Fantastic! I don’t know how to highlight your quote below but my D is partaking in the same vigorous study habits (:

“She has been a basketcase with studying, or should I say thinking about studying while secretly tumbling, facebooking, and tweeting.”

Terinzak- Great that the numbers work! Your son is probably on to something and it will be a bonus when his scores rise(: Got me a bit nervous about the grades vs tests as my D has a lower 3.7 unweighted but we were hoping her high scores would help her.

D’s friend took AP Physics test, I think, some question asked about the most powerful force…She had no idea, her response: LOVE (:

Wow, Vandy, congrats to your daughter! That’s a big honor!

Just got home from the spring choir concert. Always hard to watch the seniors at the end. It was harder still to watch my DD13b’s bf crying afterwards. For those who didn’t catch it before, her mom died from breast cancer this year. My heart hurts for her. We have offered for her to live with us for senior year, but I don’t think her dad is going to let her. Sigh. All I can do is offer.

The 2 13’s take the APLAC test tomorrow and then we are DONE. They have a physics final but neither one of them care. They could both fail and still have an A in the class. They are tired of school!

Let’s list the dates our kids get out of school and we will have a virtual Fetal Curl 2013 toast to ourselves for another year well done!

Walker1194: May 18

May 30, I think.
