HUGE Congrats Vandy!!!

Congratulations on the Presidential Achievement Award, Vandygrad! I promise I won’t tell!

Last day of school is June 8

last day of school June 20th or 21st depends on “snow days” --they are still waiting to see if they will need to use one!!!

Nellieh, sounds like your D will be very busy next year as editor and student body president! Congratulations!

Last day is June 28th!

June 20th here as well.

May 25th. I can’t believe it!

May 25th here too!

We go until June 21st!

S3 will be co-editor in chief of the paper, and student gov vice-president, in addition to sports and AP’s. He is still debating about whether to continue with drama. It is a huge time commitment.

S has had a cough and complaining of a headache all week. He says he did okay on AP Bio. His last AP test is tomorrow (Lang.). Last day of school is last day of May. He takes SAT subject tests on June 2. I hope he can keep going.

May 24th here. One more AP test tomorrow (English) and then two finals next week in her honor classes. She is taking ACT one last time in June and then she will do nothing for a month. July becomes busy again with a summer program and then August we start application season…

Congrats Vandy!

We had a lightbulb moment at our house yesterday. DD was in a “mood” and we were “discussing” that mood. Conversation turned to college and finances and she still has it in her head that we are paying for all of this, despite about 147 other conversations to the contrary. With her athletic interests and academics, most of the schools she is looking at should be pretty close to free for her, which is good. However, she has been slacking off in her sport lately–which prompted the conversation to start. I told her it was fine if she didn’t want to play in college but that means she needs to quit the team and get a job or start looking for less expensive colleges. Her come back–“why do I have to worry about this now, I have a whole year yet”.

Um, honey, no you do not, you have a couple months left before you need to start working on applications, essays, etc. DS joined the conversation about this time and said the same thing. Somehow they missed all of the application deadline information on various visits I guess. I pointed out that they were free to wait until Sept/Oct to get all of this started if they wanted but keep in mind it’s going to be like things have been for the past month with homework, studying for AP/ACT/SAT and all the extra time that took. Add in scholarship applications and it’s just busy.

They still have a couple visits to go on so I had them get out the calendar to to figure out when they could go on those visits and they came to the same conclusion I had a year ago, they have no time to go on visits between now and application time…but what do I know, I’m just a parent.

I gave them an assignment today–ask current seniors about applying to colleges and how much time that took and if they have any advice for them…

June 1…but SAT the following day…and ACT the following week…she needs to get those scores up…for her Dream school…

I cant believe that the AP Calc teacher is making them do a Huge project after the test…just seems unfair…

D was named co-head of the Improv Theatre Group…this is only her 2nd year doing this …she is Not an actor and has never acted before…she said she got it because she is so organized (she color codes her clothes and you could eat off the floor of her room)(yea I know weird for a 17yr old)(but not as bad as Monk) :)…I have never heard her so thrilled about anything…

perazzman…hope your S feels better…
nellieh…congradts to your D
tx5athome…sports and involved ec’s and AP’s are a lot…but he’ll be fine
and to anyone I left out…congradts…
Let’s all Toast to our kids…who’s got the bottle… :)

Tx5- Congrats to your S. Sounds like a similar schedule to my D. D is a soccer player so fall will be a killer. Thank goodness she quit the musicals this year. One less thing. Hopefully we will all survive.

SteveMA- I think that the concept of time is just not the same for them. D and I had a similar conversation.

Vandy- Congratulations!

Congratulations Ama. D is the opposite. Not organized, and you can swim through the pile of clothes in her room.

Okay, this made me laugh aloud:

DrGoogle- Ooh, opening up the Midwest leads to all kinds of exciting possibilities! Let me know if any of them are small Ohio LACs or Case b/c I have pics of some of those. Hawaii sounds great. I’ve not ever been there but hopefully some day!

Wherenext- “Most powerful force= Love” on physics test. This is just adorable. Some of the best things to know aren’t taught in class!

Walker- That is just heartbreaking about DD13b’s bf. Losing a parent at such a young age is completely awful. I love that you offered a place for her. Even if she can’t live with you, it is very clear message of support to her.

My D finishes either June 8 or 9. It’s early for us this year!

DD’s room sounds the same-not sure what color the carpet is in there any more :D. She is working on cleaning it this week (not that I told her to do it Sunday when she had nothing going on but…see above:D). The girls are getting ready for prom at our house on Saturday. Apparently we have the biggest bathrooms…

Wow, what a huge variance on ending dates! Looks like our latest is June 20-21. Hard to believe that anyone managed to get snow days this year b/c it was such a mild winter!

Txathome- Your S will be busy indeed! Congrats to him on all his leadership for next year.

Perazzi- So sorry your S isn’t feeling well. I’m sure the fatigue and stress makes them susceptible to all kinds of illnesses. Hopefully he can hang in. I’ve heard mugs of cocoa can do wonders! :-)

SteveMA- It is amazing how selective the hearing can be, isn’t it? I’m glad you found out what they were thinking now so that you can help them shift. You’ll have to let us know what they find out from their “assignment!”

SteveMA, I had a similar conversation with DD about college costs, applications, sports etc.

I reminded her how much I could pay for school, and that it wasn’t much more than our in-state tuition. Even though I’ve gone over it before, I think a light bulb went off and she got ticked off. She said “DS got to go wherever he wanted!” I told her no - DS was lucky, and his first choice ended up costing no more than our in-state, AND he is taking stafford loans, AND he knows that if it takes extra time or he goes to grad school, he has to pay for it.

She was upset, but she went off and started paying attention to the list of schools, and what she’d need to do (and how flexible she’ll need to be.) The concept of cost and the need for aid/scholarship finally sunk in.
I wish that I had a boat-load of money for college and that this wasn’t an issue, but after a series of circumstances, it just isn’t gonna happen. Still, I have enormous mom-guilt. My parents put no financial restrictions on where I went to college, and they paid the whole bill.
That was a huge gift that I won’t be able to give her.

DD was also under the impression we were "letting’ DS go wherever he wanted. He corrected her on that one. Sure, we are letting them APPLY wherever they want, but it will come down to finances. DD just doesn’t realize that with her athletic ability she will have far more leeway with her college choices than DS does…

DS’s last day is May 24th!

His goal today is to win the spot of School Historian…he’s says it’ll be great to show leadereship on his college appliccation. Isn’t it amazing how he waits till just about the last minute to do this? I’m glad that he’s finally showing some iniative in taking responsibility for broadening his ECs other than sports.

He starts summer tennis practice Saturday. He’ll have almost a full year till spring tennis starts. His goal is to win State!
