Parents of the HS Class of 2013

^^^^

I didn’t think that you had to go to an Ivy to become a CEO? Is this new?

None of the CEOs that I know went to an Ivy.

Most went to state flagships or ‘average’ LACs. They are all highly educated.

I knew My S probably could not be an IBanker without going to an Ivy type school. Now, I guess , he can’t even be a CEO or highly educated. Bummer.

Having time to read two days in a row, wow!

Sex: We have, well I have, talked very openly with D about sex for a long while and until recently she was only an active listener, now she will open up a bit. D is on BC due to menstrual issues but still knows condoms are necessary too. I am more concerned with safe sex than abstinence at this point and I have made that clear to her. D’s BF and I are pretty close, he calls me Mom, and he definitely knows my opinion on sex too.

School is finished Tuesday and looks like D will have all A’s! I am pleasantly surprised because I thought a B in in APWH was a definite because she had an 85 3rd qtr, but with a 113 4th qtr and a 100 on her exam she manage the A!

Now for some frustration, D’s German teacher maybe the death of me…she is horrible and the school has known there was a problem with her before they hired her in the summer. Well now she is being let go after Tuesday and she is out to prove what she has taught the kids some German, which is so not true but is giving an exam on what she should have taught. I am not too worried about D’s grade but it is just frustrating. German II will be online next yr.

We will anxiously await her report card with her class rank, I know after 1st semester she was #4 in her class…when she entered the Jr class she was #7. So it will be very interesting to see if she moves up anymore, although it is just a pride thing because as I have mentioned D can not be Val/Sal because she only became apart of the Jr class in Jan.

Good morning/afternoon all!

Too much to comment on. But am laughing!

Pets: I am so sorry about the sweet kitty. We have a one and a half year old black labrador (Henry) who I am madly in love with. We lost our 10 year old lab suddenly to cancer shortly after S2 left for college and it was a double whammy. So I know how you feel. We knew he was dying for a couple of weeks, but his quality of life was good. Then one day you could tell he was in pain and we took him in. It was I think the hardest thing I ever had to do.

Sex: D1 had a serious boyfriend all through high school. She swore up and down over and over again that they were not having sex. Still I gave a lot of lectures. WHen she returned for Spring Break her freshmen year at college I took her and her brothers out to dinner (DH was working) and she proceeded to confess every naughty thing she did in high school including having sex with her boyfriend (in the car, in the backyard, at his house, at our house). “Um, waiter, could I get another glass of wine?”. I don’t think my boys (20,16) are sexually active, but I give them a lot of lectures anyway.

So glad it is already Thursday!

O…M…G…
Pretty sure I would have need something MUCH stronger than a glass of wine at that point…LMAO!!!

I guess ZITS is doing the SAT theme this week [Home | Zits by Jerry Scott and Jim Borgman](<a href=“Comics Kingdom | Zits by Jerry Scott & Jim Borgman”>http://www.zitscomics.com/). Tuesday’s is still my fave.

S’13 is officially a SENIOR! Took his last exam today – looks like he’ll be finishing the year with a 4.0. Hard to be too mad at him for sleeping yesterday afternoon/evening and not doing any SAT studying! Still, right I have him locked in his room without his cell or ipod doing a practice test. :D

Nellieh – AMEN indeed!

Wahoo – lmao about the “rubber”bands!

Terinzak – Sorry to hear about your loss – we went through the loss of pet this year too – it’s so hard on everyone. Hope your visit to UU (is that how you abbreviate it) moves it up to #1 on your S’s list as well!

Megpmom – S’13 got the triad of HPV shots as well. How great you have friends that could help you with such unfamiliar territory.

MDMom – OMG – that’s something my H would say!

About the sex talks . . . S’13 told me that in health last year, the teacher asked the kids how many of their parents had talked to them about sex – he said he was the only one raising his hand. I made it a point when he was pretty young make him comfortable talking about sex, stds, drugs, alcohol, etc. He’s asked me quite a few questions over the years. In the not so distance past, I found myself explaining S&M. :X Even so, I still wasn’t ready to see that condom – talk is one thing, that was real!

Walker1194, when is the performance for Hairspray? The cast notes certainly sound like they will be a challenge!

re: sex and condoms, etc., the kids and I have talked and they had ‘health’ classes during PE (they say that it is sexually transmitted infections not diseases, now!), but their usual reaction is to roll their eyes and say “Mooommmmm, we know all that already!” I think the car idea is excellent, I’ve used it in the past and I’m certainly going to use it in the future. No BF’s or GF’s yet, but with S’12 going off to college in the fall we definitely have a few things to discuss.

nellieh, wow, if only I could get my D that interested in organizing the college search. She knows her top 3 or 4 colleges but beyond that…

89wahoo, I had to laugh at your S’14 and his “condoms”. Poor guy!

terinzak, so sorry to hear about your cat. 19 is a venerable age, but it’s always hard to lose a family member. <<hugs>> I hope you have a good trip to the University of Utah - let us know how it goes and your D’s reaction!</hugs>

reeinaz, so funny about the mosquito bites! His project obviously made quite an impact on him!

Ama308, I agree, it would be soooo nice if our kids had the option to take the SAT in the summer, rather than trying to combine it with all their activities in the school year. Wow, $4500, even for a 3 week program, sounds pretty expensive to me but I imagine there are families out there somewhere who could afford it! Feel free to rant!

Longsx3, sorry about your frustrations with the German teacher. It seems strange that the school hired her if they knew there was a problem!

MommyDearest, I loved the Zits! Congratulations on your S’13 becoming a senior officially! I find it necessary to remove all the technology too, sometimes. It’s much too distracting!

I’ve got to go back and catch up (again!) but I wanted to put this link out:

[Planning a College Visit? Readers Suggest Questions to Ask - NYTimes.com](Planning a College Visit? Readers Suggest Questions to Ask - The New York Times)

It’s an article of questions to ask when your child visits a college campus. My kid says she is done with her list and visiting colleges so I’m bookmarking it for reference for next year… hopefully on accepted student days!

My version of a FFYS night is a Smorgasboard night. That’s when I empty out the refrigerator of all the containers of leftovers and kids pick and choose what they want. Heat it up and go!

Walker- ROFLMAO on “spineless child of Baptist missionaries!” OMG, I died on that one. I think I scared the dog. We too watch 16 and Pregnant and also Teen Mom. I also have seen Savage U a few times although I have to say that scares the absolute CRAP out of me. The first two are great for discussion though. I think any illusions my daughter might have had about getting pregnant to keep a boy (not that I think she had them…) are utterly shattered. We talk about all that stuff plenty also. I’ve helped with tampons, shown my boys how tampons work using bowls of water (and also talked about volume, lol), talk about all manner of physical changes.

Nellieh- AMEN! Great job that your D is doing. And laughed upthread about whomever said their son thought Naviance was “Cool” and wanted the mom to see. Bet there was some bitten tongue on that one!

89Wahoo— Aggggh! Omg, so funny! You all are killing me today. I can totally imagine the same scene happening in my house. Love it!!

Terinzak- big hugs on the loss of the kitty. That is just heartrending. I am truly sorry. On a positive note, I hope the trip to U of Utah goes well. Have him look over that link I sent for question ideas!

Megp- I plan to get both my sons the Gardasil shots as well. How great that your S had someone take him out and talk to him. We should all be so lucky!

Apollo and Donivrian- I find the car the absolute best place to talk about things like that. First of all, moving vehicle and locked doors make for a good time to talk. Also teens, especially males, talk better when they are engaged in something else OR if you aren’t looking at them directly. I’ve found it works with my S13yo for me to just say, “Ask me about sex. What do you want to know? What are you hearing about? What have you been hearing about?” and just letting it go from there.

Mommaof5- Amazed you didn’t cry. I would have been bawling!

Our2girls- GMTA!! I just read what you wrote- same thing I did about how to talk to kids. And shipping STD… Hilarious!

Longsx3- Congrats to D and all A’s! Marvelous!

TX5athome- Your list reminds me of the Sarah Silverman song about Matt Damon "On the bed, on the floor, on the towel by the door…
Mommydearest- Congrats to your S being a Senior as well! And a 4.0- Awesome!

Speaking of sex stuff- I have two sons (13yo and 10yo)- The 10 yo is currently buck naked out on the deck, shaking his groove thang. He just got out of the pool. He and his 13yo brother were skinny dipping, as they are wont to do when other folks aren’t around. The 13 year old has flashes of modesty and then he reverts back to being a little kid. I’m just letting him enjoy it as long as he wants too… Our poor D17 will be sooooo over *****es before she even sees one on a boyfriend… they are unavoidable around here! ;-)

:ooooooooh: I got “starred” for a naughty word.
Make that “boy bits” then. LOL!

vandygrad87 - rotflmao about scaring the dog, and too funny about the boy bits and your D being so over them!

So happy for all the 4.0 kids! That is hard to do, and even harder to maintain once they’re there!

LOVE this group!! btw, I rarely drink, but received a couple different flavors of ‘Seagrams malt beverages’ that really look like wine coolers…strawberry daiquri and Jamaican Me Crazy flavors. I like 'em, so I’ll be “in the basement” drinking them at some point with you guys as our kids go off to college :)

I’ve been out of town for 48 hours and am pages behind but look forward to catching up late tonight! Hope all is well with everyone.

RobD - Our kids probably grew up with the same lullabies. Huge Ramones house.
My 1st concert was the Ramones & B52s at the Philadelphia Zoo - no stage. Danced with the B-52s.

Met with Dean of school today. Not thrilled with son’s schedule, but it will work. No Math may be an issue, but I’m not paying for an on-line course that I have to fight with son to stay structured and complete.

No luck with getting school to change his D in essay class to a Pass/Fail, but they will allow him to increase grade with summer work. Worst class ever. Young new teacher trying to prove something; stupid kid thinking it didn’t count for anything; “required” course, yet only 1/3 of the grade actually took it. It was meant to help with SAT/ACT. Umm, then why can’t his SAT/ACT essay scores be part of the grade?! I was hoping that school needed kid to get Natl Merit as much as I do, but apparently they don’t care about the press. Honestly, I think all the 12 week courses should be pass/fail.

College costs, apps and visits are giving me nightmares again – literally. I really do need to be sedated. The costs have me freaking.

HELP WITH MATCH SCHOOL - what US News rank is a match?

GPA 3.55 UW/ 3.97 W out of max 4.5 W
mainly A- grades, 1 C, 1B, 3 B+ from 9th-11th

4 APs thru 11th grade/ 7 APs by graduation
10 honors thru 11th grade/ 11 by graduation

ACT 34
SAT 1480/2100

We had thought 25-55 range before his GPA dropped.

He has 2 safeties and 2 high reach, just trying to sort thru where the rest should fall and then plan summer visits.

Terinzak, so sorry about your kitty.

Vandy, thanks for the link. That is great that you are done with visits and have a list! We’ll be doing the summer tour…

Sent from my DROID2 GLOBAL using CC

Terinzak, I meant DS’s not D’s, sorry about that! :)

Terinzak - big big hugs to you about your kitty. We put our Old English Bulldog down a couple of years ago (cancer of the liver) and it was absolutely heartbreaking. Even now, when I see a bulldog, I can get teary thinking about our sweet girl. It was actually H’s doggie (he got her when we were engaged and living apart) and it’s one of the few times in my life I’ve ever seen him cry. I hope that in your grief, you also find some peace. :frowning:

You guys are the best group of virtual buddies. I’ve been reading along and just laughing and laughing! Too bad we’re not all going to meet up at a 4th of July cookout this summer! ;)

I was thinking the same thing! Maybe we should plan to meet up one day in the middle of the country - that would be… Nebraska? Sorry earthmother, that would probably be quite a trek for you!

Longhaul-Bummer about the class! My DD has no Math next year either. What did your school say about that? Your S has very good stats! I would guess your son is still in the 25-55 range. My friend’s son had lots of great choices with lower ACT than your S but same GPA. What region of the country is he interested in? He was looking around your area.

Vandy-thanks for the link! I bookmarked it!

MDmom- My prom was at Balboa Yacht Club… I went there on the Blue Lagoon (movie) boat, no rocking though(:

MommyDearest-Loving the Zits!

I sooo would meet up with you guys. I am missing RobD by a week at Kenyon college this summer!

Our2girls- Jamacian Me Crazy sounds amazing! (:

No sex talk here today unless you count my husband flexing his bicep while his arm is on the car door. I said “oooww sexy” All 3 kids said, “yuck!” H said “Do I need to remind you if she didn’t find me attractive, you wouldn’t be here” Followed by my S saying “Really, Dad, Really?” H replied (1 eyebrow up) “Really” The kids and I couldn’t get out of the car fast enough! I think he is probably still in the car flexing (: Chicka chicka wow wow (:

I don’t remember the dates for the summer writers program - when are you guys going to be there? I’m pretty sure that DD and I will go as part of our tour, but we haven’t finalized it yet. Kenyon is a definite reach and unless DD brings up her standardized test score a bit, we may skip it.

eta - found the dates - I think we’ll be there during session 2.

longhaul, great stats! It’s so hard to sort out the schools. I’m no help - I’m not looking at the USNWR rankings at all, so I don’t even know what schools fall where!

Where next, that’s too funny!
Wonder if there has ever been a CC forum that met up? Sounds like it could be quite a weekend!

First Annual CC Kegger! Lol
